Chapter 129 - Chapter 112: Suspicious

The dawn light seeped softly through the curtains as Kai blinked awake, the room bathed in a gentle, pale glow.

It really looked like a peaceful morning of a peaceful day in a peaceful life of two peaceful students who were only enjoying their school period.

Kai's body was warm, nestled close to Hina's as she lay still asleep in his arms, her head buried against his chest, breathing slowly and steadily.

He felt a moment of contentment wash over him, savoring the rare peace of having her so close and serene.

For a moment, he forgot about everything.

It was as though, in those quiet moments, the weight of their dangerous lives vanished, leaving only the sense of safety and comfort between them.

Hina's presence brought him a sense of calm that was hard to put into words.

She was strong, protective, and fierce, yet here she seemed fragile, unguarded, as if the weight she carried had been momentarily lifted.

But along all the positive feelings, he also felt a strange kind of unease.

He watched her, feeling grateful to be the one she trusted enough to see this side of her.

He was the first to stir, careful not to wake her as he gently shifted his arm.

But Hina was always attuned to him, and within moments, her eyes fluttered open.

Her gaze softened as she looked up at him, a sleepy smile forming as she took in his face.

"Good morning," she murmured, her voice hushed and tender.

"Good morning," Kai replied softly, brushing a lock of hair from her face. "I didn't mean to wake you."

She shook her head, leaning into his touch.

"I'd rather wake up like this than to any alarm." She said in a muffled voice.

They shared a quiet moment before pulling themselves from the warm cocoon of blankets, preparing for the day ahead.

Kai moved to his dresser, quickly slipping into his uniform, while Hina tied her hair back with her usual calm focus.

Once they were dressed, they made their way downstairs, ready to grab a quick breakfast before heading to school.

But as they entered the kitchen, they noticed something unusual.

Breakfast was already set out on the table with some freshly made toast, eggs, and a pot of tea with two mugs.

Kai raised an eyebrow. "That's… unexpected." He said, clearly not expecting such a big breakfast.

Hina's sharp gaze scanned the room, her instinct always on alert. "Akira usually waits for us in the morning."

On the table, there was only a note in her handwriting: "Gone shopping. See you later."

Hina's eyes narrowed as she read it, and for a split second, Kai thought he saw a flicker of suspicion in her expression.

But she quickly masked it, brushing it off with a casual shrug.

Kai let out a small yawn, stretching as he settled at the table to eat, unfazed by Akira's absence.

But little did he knew that someone like her wouldn't go unrecognized.

After finishing their breakfast, they gathered their things and headed out, walking to school in the crisp morning air.

The familiar sights and sounds of the town were oddly comforting to Kai, grounding him in normality for a moment.

Upon reaching the school entrance, however, they were met by a familiar face.

Naomi, a member of the student council, was waiting by the gate, a clipboard in hand as she greeted them with her usual enthusiasm.

"Kai, Hina! Good morning!" she said with a bright smile. "I was just about to head inside, but I'm glad I caught you both. We're finalizing the details for the school festival, and we could really use your help with some of the afternoon activities."

Kai gave a polite nod, but before he could respond, Hina stepped forward.

"Actually, I have some things to take care of this afternoon," Hina replied, her tone casual but firm. "Kai, however, should be available to help."

Kai glanced at her, and in an instant, he understood.

This was her way of ensuring he'd stay safe at school while she dealt with whatever was on her mind about Akira.

He couldn't help but appreciate her thoughtfulness, even if he wanted to be by her side.

Naomi looked a bit disappointed but nodded. "Of course, Hina. Kai, would you mind staying after school then?"

Kai agreed with a slight nod.

Hina gave him a reassuring smile before turning to head off on her own.

He watched her go, a part of him still uneasy about whatever she was planning, but he respected her decision to keep him out of danger.

As the day went on, Kai tried to focus on his classes, but his thoughts kept drifting to Hina.

He couldn't shake the feeling that she was getting herself into something risky.

By the time the final bell rang, he was exhausted from worrying, but he stayed behind as promised, making his way to the school's festival planning area to meet up with Naomi.

As he was tidying up some tables, a familiar voice called out to him, breaking his concentration.

"Kai!" came the cheerful sound of Emi's voice.

She was approaching quickly, her face lit up with enthusiasm.

Kai looked up in mild surprise. "Oh, Emi. Didn't expect to see you here."

She grinned, brushing a stray strand of blonde hair from her face. "I noticed you from across the courtyard. I could use a little help with some… complicated matters."

There was a playful glint in her eye that made him slightly uneasy, but he forced himself to remain calm.

Emi always had a mysterious air around her, and he wasn't entirely sure if he could trust her yet.

But she hadn't given him any reason to doubt her intentions.

Moreover, Emi was his childhood friend.

"Complicated matters?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Emi just smiled, a mischievous expression on her face as she tilted her head slightly, as if daring him to find out more.

"Let's just say it involves something beyond the usual school festival plans," she replied cryptically.

Kai hesitated, unsure of what he was getting himself into.

But Emi's charm and curiosity were hard to resist.

He couldn't deny that he was intrigued by her invitation, even if he wasn't entirely sure of her intentions.

But, considering Hina's words about her, he still knew that he had to be careful.

As he considered his next move, he couldn't shake the nagging feeling that Hina wouldn't be pleased with him following Emi.

But at the same time, he felt that he owed it to himself to explore this strange offer as a new way to investigate and give the others some help.
