Chapter 29 - 29: Tensions Rise**

Eric sat in his office, staring blankly at his phone. The silence was shattered by the ringing that made his stomach churn. It was the corrupt police officer on his payroll, finally calling with an update. He answered, bracing himself for the worst.

"Talk to me," Eric demanded.

"It's bad," the officer said, his voice low and urgent. "Your men walked right into a trap. They were arrested on the spot. The lab is intact."

Eric slammed his fist on the desk, his face contorted with rage. "How the hell did this happen? It was a perfect plan!"

"Seems like they were prepared. Someone tipped them off, or they were just too good," the officer replied.

Eric's anger boiled over. "Damn it! Do you have any idea what this means? I underestimated them, and now I have to explain this mess to Vance."

The officer remained silent, knowing better than to interrupt Eric's tirade. After a few deep breaths, Eric steeled himself and dialed Edgar Vance's number. The call connected, and Vance's voice crackled over the line.

"Eric, tell me you have good news," Vance's voice was hopeful, but there was an underlying menace.

Eric hesitated, then plunged in. "Boss, it didn't go as planned. The team got arrested. Ethan's lab is still standing."

There was a moment of silence, and then Vance exploded. "You incompetent fool! Do you have any idea what this means for us? How could you let this happen?"

Eric winced at the fury in Vance's voice. "I underestimated them. They were more prepared than we thought."

Vance's yelling continued, echoing through the prison walls. "You promised me results, Eric! You assured me this would be taken care of!" In a fit of rage, Vance smashed the phone against the wall, the plastic and wires scattering across the floor.

Meanwhile, at home, Ethan sat alone in his living room, the soft glow of a lamp casting long shadows. He was deep in thought, reflecting on the events of the past few years. They had been through so much, faced so many threats, and yet they had survived. They had been lucky, but luck wasn't something he wanted to rely on anymore.

He knew they needed to be better prepared for the dangers ahead. The thought of asking Joe to train the team in basic military tactics crossed his mind. It was a necessary step to ensure their safety. After all, they couldn't afford to let their guard down, not even for a moment.

Ethan picked up his phone and sent a message to Joe, asking him to meet the next day to discuss the idea.

Meanwhile, Joe and Anya were out on a date, walking hand in hand through a quiet park. The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting a romantic glow on their path. They had grown closer over the past few weeks, and tonight was no exception.

Joe looked at Anya, a soft smile playing on his lips. "You know, I never expected to find someone like you in the midst of all this chaos."

Anya smiled back, feeling a warmth in her heart. "Life has a funny way of surprising us, doesn't it?"

Joe nodded. "It does. And I'm grateful for every surprise it's given me, especially you."

They stopped by a bench, sitting down to enjoy the peaceful night. Anya leaned her head on Joe's shoulder, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn't felt in a long time.

"I feel safe with you," Anya said softly. "No matter what happens, I know we'll get through it together."

Joe wrapped an arm around her, holding her close. "I promise, Anya, I'll always protect you. We'll face whatever comes our way, together."

As they sat in comfortable silence, the world seemed to fade away. For a moment, there was no danger, no looming threats. Just two people finding solace in each other's presence.

The night wore on, and they eventually made their way back, feeling more connected than ever. Joe knew that the days ahead would be challenging, but with Anya by his side, he felt ready to face anything. Together, they were stronger, and together, they would overcome any obstacle that stood in their way.
