Chereads / THE YOUNG ARCHER / Chapter 9 - Great beast's terror

Chapter 9 - Great beast's terror

One afternoon, as they crested a hill overlooking a small village, they spied a group of soldiers gathered around a large bonfire. The archer and the warrior exchanged worried glances before quietly making their way down the slope, drawing closer to the encampment. As they drew near, they heard the soldiers speaking in hushed tones about a great beast that had been terrorizing the countryside, slaughtering livestock and attacking villages.

"We must find a way to stop it," one of the soldiers said, his voice filled with fear. "It's only a matter of time before it comes for us."

The archer and the warrior exchanged another glance, knowing that it was their duty to help. They stealthily made their way through the camp, avoiding detection until they were close enough to overhear the soldiers' plans. It seemed that they intended to ambush the beast the following day, as it was rumored to be passing through a nearby forest.

That night, as the archer and the warrior lay in the darkness, they discussed their options. They knew that they could not simply allow the soldiers to face the beast alone. They had to help them. But at the same time, they knew that they could not reveal their presence to the soldiers just yet.

"We should join them in the morning," the archer said softly. "But we should also find a way to let the villagers know that they are not alone, that there are allies nearby who will fight for them."

The warrior nodded in agreement. "Very well," she said. "Tomorrow, we shall join the soldiers, and fight alongside them against the beast. But tonight, we shall find a way to warn the villagers of their impending danger."

Together, they crept through the darkness, careful not to make a sound. As they approached the edge of the village, they saw a group of villagers gathered around a bonfire, huddled together for warmth and comfort. The archer raised his bow, nocking an arrow to it, while the warrior readied her sword. At a silent agreement, they waited until the villagers had dispersed, leaving only a few children playing near the fire.

The warrior stepped forward, kneeling down beside the children. "Hey, you there," she whispered, catching their attention. "You must be frightened by what you've heard about the beast. But know this: you are not alone. There are others who care about your safety, and who will fight to protect you."

The children looked at her with wide eyes, uncertain whether to believe her words. The archer, seeing this, drew an arrow from his quiver and drew it across his chest, pointing to himself and then to the warrior. The children gasped in surprise, and one of them tentatively reached out to touch the warrior's armor.

"We will do everything in our power to drive the beast away," the warrior continued, her voice soft and reassuring. "But for now, you must stay hidden. Stay close to the village, and do not wander far from your homes. The soldiers will be here tomorrow, and together, we will protect you."

As the children listened to her words, their fear began to fade, replaced by a glimmer of hope. They nodded solemnly, promising to stay safe and to wait for the soldiers. The archer and the warrior exchanged a brief glance before turning back towards the forest.

Their hearts were heavy as they made their way back to the soldiers' camp. They knew that the battle ahead would be difficult, and there was no guarantee that they would emerge victorious. But they also knew that they could not stand by and do nothing while innocent lives were at stake.

When they finally reached the camp, the archer and the warrior found the soldiers preparing for battle. They quietly joined their ranks, offering what support they could. As the sun rose, they set out into the forest, tracking the beast until they finally found it, sleeping amidst a clearing.

The soldiers hesitated, unsure of how to approach the monstrous creature. But the archer and the warrior, remembering their promise to the villagers, stepped forward, drawing the beast's attention away from their comrades. A fierce battle ensued, with the archer picking off stray soldiers while the warrior engaged the beast in close combat.

The soldiers fought valiantly, driven by the knowledge that they were fighting not only for themselves, but for the innocent lives that had been threatened. The archer's arrows found their mark, and the warrior's blade slashed through the beast's flesh. They fought until the beast was finally defeated, collapsing to the ground with a final, agonized groan. The soldiers cheered, their relief and triumph mixing with the exhaustion and pain of battle.

The archer and the warrior, bloodied but unbowed, shared a brief glance as they caught their breath. They knew that their fight was not yet over. They still had to find a way to convince the villagers that the beast was truly vanquished, and that they could now return to their homes without fear.

Together, they led the soldiers back to the village, their hearts heavy with the weight of the responsibility they bore. As they approached, they saw the villagers emerging from their homes, cautiously peeking out from behind shutters and curtains. The warrior raised her sword, signaling for silence.

"People of the village," she called out, her voice strong and clear. "We have faced the beast, and we have defeated it. Your village is safe once more. You may return to your homes, and live your lives without fear. The soldiers who fight beside us will remain to protect you, and ensure that this danger never threatens you again."

The villagers looked at one another, uncertainty etched on their faces. It was the warrior who broke the silence, walking slowly through the crowd. She knelt down beside a young girl who had been orphaned by the beast's attack, taking her hand in her own.

"We will rebuild your homes," she promised. "We will help you mourn your loved ones, and we will stand by your side as you put the pieces of your lives back together. Together, we will make sure that such a tragedy never befalls you again."

As the words left her lips, the villagers seemed to visibly relax. They nodded, their eyes filled with hope and gratitude. Slowly, they began to disperse, returning to their homes and their lives. The soldiers, too, prepared to move on, their mission complete. The archer and the warrior stood together, watching as the village slowly returned to normal, knowing that their efforts had made a difference.
