As Mayor Sherman finished guiding them through the cathedral, he turned to Father Alric and Sister Eleanor with a kind smile.
"This is your home now. Settle in, make it your own. The people of Esbakan will soon come to know and trust you."
His voice was full of confidence as if he had no doubt the two would accomplish their mission. Then, with a nod to Luke, he added.
"I'll leave you all to it, but Luke—do what you can," he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a whisper. "You'll know what to do when the time comes."
Luke gave a slow nod, unsure of what was expected of him, but trusting that he would figure it out. Mayor Sherman seemed so certain, but Luke had simply learned to go with the flow in moments like these. With a final glance around, the mayor turned and left the cathedral, his footsteps echoing through the halls as he exited.
