Chapter 20 - Black Lotus

Liam sat in his lavish lounge, the soft glow of candlelight casting shadows on the ornate walls. He sipped his tea thoughtfully, the delicate porcelain cup almost lost in his small hands. The recent failure weighed heavily on his mind.

"This is not how it was supposed to go," he muttered to himself, staring into the dark liquid. "Elise showing up this early... and Evelyn. What happened to her?"

The butler, a tall, stoic man with graying hair, stood patiently by the door, awaiting orders.

"Geoffrey," Liam said, finally breaking the silence. "I need you to find out what's happened at Hell's Kitchen. Specifically, I want to know about Evelyn."

Geoffrey nodded, his expression unchanging. "Of course, Master Liam. I will discreetly gather the information you require."

"Good," Liam replied, setting the teacup down with a decisive clink. "And be quick about it. We can't afford any more surprises."

Geoffrey bowed slightly and exited the room, leaving Liam to his thoughts. He leaned back in his chair, eyes narrowing as he considered his next move. The plot had deviated far from what he had anticipated. Elise's early appearance complicated things, but it also presented new opportunities.

"I'll need to adjust my strategy," Liam mused. "If I can't expose them directly, perhaps there's another way to achieve my goals."

His mind raced, plotting and scheming. The key players were all in place, and he just needed to find the right way to manipulate them to his advantage.

Meanwhile, back at Hell's Kitchen, the staff were in a quiet uproar. Nyssa, Lyra, Lucien, and Victor gathered in the staff room, discussing Evelyn coming back to work and how to reintegrate her into their fold.

"She's fine but still shows some instinctive hostility towards me," Victor said, pacing the room. "And I can't blame her. But we need to be cautious."

Lucien leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "I can smooth things over, but it won't be easy; I can't abuse my hypnosis without harming her."

Nyssa nodded, looking thoughtful. "We could gradually introduce her to the day to day life in Hell's Kitchen; perhaps we're overthinking this. She just needs to feel comfortable and trust us...so maybe you two should stop scheming and just be normal, if that's even possible." she sighed, looking at Victor and Lucien.

"Well said kitten ," Elise said, a sly smile playing on her lips. "It'll make it more convincing. We just work the restaurant like nothing's happened for now."

Lucien sighed, squinting at Elise. "And don't forget about that kid. He instigated her against us, and he won't stop there."

Victor's expression darkened. "He's clever and dangerous. We need to neutralize him before he causes any more trouble."

The room fell silent as they considered their options. The stakes were higher than ever, and one wrong move could bring everything crashing down.

Liam, now dressed in plain, nondescript clothing, moved through the bustling market with purpose. His usual elegant attire had been swapped for a simple tunic and trousers, and a worn cap obscured his distinctive features. He had perfected the art of blending in, and tonight, that skill was crucial.

The market was alive with activity, vendors shouting about their wares, and the scent of fresh produce and spices mingling in the warm evening air. Liam navigated the crowd effortlessly, his keen eyes scanning his surroundings while keeping his head down. He had a destination in mind: the underground entrance to the black market.

As he approached a nondescript alleyway between two stalls, he glanced around to ensure he wasn't being followed. Satisfied, he slipped into the shadows and made his way down the narrow passage. At the end of the alley, a heavy wooden door marked the entrance. It was guarded by a burly man with a scar running down his cheek.

Liam approached the guard, keeping his voice low. "Evening. I'm here to see the Black Lotus."

The guard grunted, giving Liam a scrutinizing look before stepping aside. "Go on in. But no funny business."

Liam nodded, pushing the door open and stepping into the dimly lit corridor beyond. The air was cooler here, and the sounds of the market faded, replaced by the murmur of voices and the occasional clink of glass. He descended a flight of stairs, the flickering torchlight casting eerie shadows on the stone walls.

At the bottom, the corridor opened into a larger chamber, filled with people haggling over rare and illicit goods. The black market was a labyrinth of stalls and hidden rooms, where anything and everything could be bought for the right price.

Liam made his way through the crowd, his destination clear in his mind. He needed information, and there was only one person he trusted to provide it. He approached a stall selling various enchanted trinkets and waited patiently until the merchant noticed him.

"What can I do for you?" the merchant asked, his eyes narrowing with curiosity.

"I'm looking for Harold," Liam replied quietly. "Tell him an old friend needs his services."

The merchant nodded and disappeared into the back of the stall. Moments later, Harold emerged, his expression a mix of surprise and concern.

"Liam," he said, keeping his voice low. "What are you doing here?"

"I need information," Liam replied, his tone serious. "About Hell's Kitchen and Evelyn. There's been a... complication."

Harold nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "Follow me. We'll talk in private."

They moved to a secluded room at the back of the market, away from prying eyes and ears. As they settled in, Harold leaned forward, his expression tense.

"What's going on?" he asked.

Liam took a deep breath. "The plan to expose Victor Delacroix failed. Evelyn discovered the truth, but something happened to her. I need to know what they've done and how we can turn this to our advantage."

Harold listened intently, nodding as Liam explained the situation. "I'll gather the information you need," he said finally. "But be careful, Liam. This game you're playing is more dangerous than you know."

Liam nodded, his resolve firm. "I know the risks. But we have to see this through. For Evelyn, and for everyone Victor has wronged."
