"You can trust me," Lilian assured her, reading the girl's thoughts. "I'm on your side."
"I know," Gwendolyn murmured, still uncertain.
"Then, please, stay here. You'll be safe here."
"I will," Gwendolyn promised, her heart heavy. She wasn't sure if she would ever see Lord Sherbourne again, but she hoped that the cottage would offer some protection from the Witch of the Waste, even if it meant sacrificing her own dreams and desires.
"I'm sorry for bringing all of this down on you," Lilian apologized, her eyes filled with regret. "I wish I could've protected you from the Witch of the Waste's curse, but you have to understand, I had no choice. The old ways are fading, and I have to do everything I can to keep them alive."
"I understand," Gwendolyn answered quietly, her eyes downcast.
"I'll make sure the witch never finds you, I promise," Lilian reassured her, placing a gentle hand on the girl's shoulder.
