The days passed slowly in the cottage, and Gwendolyn spent her time helping Lilian and Dorothy around the cottage. She was grateful for the distraction, as it gave her less time to dwell on her fears and worries. Lilian was often busy with her own affairs, and when she was around, she seemed to have a distant and aloof manner.
Gwendolyn could see that Dorothy was wary of her, but the young girl did her best to be friendly and helpful.
"Good morning, Lilian," Gwendolyn greeted as the older woman entered the kitchen.
"Good morning, Miss Gwendolyn," Lilian responded, her voice cool and detached.
Gwendolyn did her best to remain friendly and positive, but the tension in the air was evident. Dorothy's caution and Lilian's guarded attitude created a constant strain on the atmosphere, and it was difficult for Gwendolyn not to be affected by it. She knew that her situation was precarious, and she had to be on her guard at all times.
