"Ew! Look at that creep."
"Ugh! How did a gloomy and ugly person like him get into this school?"
"Hey loser! Stop looking at us. Why don't you drop dead by the dumpster behind the school?"
"Yeah! No ones going to miss you anyway!"
He sent them a sidelong glance and went back to reading his novel. The boy couldn't care less about their ridicule and slanderous words.
From the open window, a cool spring breeze blew into the room and the boy couldn't help but look out the window. "Spring huh…"
It's springtime and 2nd year high school student Ena Haru is simply trying to enjoy his school life. Despite being alone and having no friends, he finds his loneliness a blessing.
He didn't have to waste any unnecessary energy to talk to others nor try to reciprocate their emotions. He enjoys passing his time by indulging himself into his novels.
Nobody approaches Haru because of his gloomy aura and unkempt appearance. Long black hair covered his face and his green eyes. What adds to his non-approachable appearance was his non-durable guru round glasses. Everything combined gave him the power of being undesirable.
The school bell rings and the students hurry to take their seats at their desk. Haru slips his cat-shaped bookmark into the pages he last read off on and takes out his notebook and stationary. As he was paying attention to the lesson, he could hear a whispering conversation behind him.
Recalling their voices, even if it is reduced to a whisper, he could tell that it was from two out of the four girls who insulted him this morning.
"Hey~ hey~ wanna go to that ikeman cafe later tonight?" The one who asked was Sarada Eiriko. She would be best described as a gal, an upbeat, energetic girl who has blonde hair and blue eyes. She's also the leader of her gal gang.
"I want to-! but isn't that place super expensive?" The one who answered her was her right hand gal or 2nd in command Sanae Mai. She has long brown hair that's usually tied into a ponytail. Her brown eyes held a sense of calmness to them despite her energetic character when she is with Eiriko.
"Come on! Let's go tonight! I really miss seeing our man."
"I know what you mean-! but I'm currently broke."
"Aww, then I guess I'll go by myself tonight."
"Say hi to him for me."
"Sure thing!"
Overhearing their conversation, Haru couldn't help but sigh. What a waste of time. He said to himself.
Lunch time came and Haru was eating his lunch while reading his novel. There were a bunch of his classmates still in the room, but not a single one bothered to join him - - until now.
"Yo Four Eyes!"
Before he was about to take another bite from his lunch, Haru looks over and sees Eiriko pointing at him.
"Wh-what is it…" Unsatisfied with his answer, she stomps towards him. She leans in close and says, "You can't see without those glasses right?"
"Well, yeah. I wouldn't be wearing them if that wasn't the case."
"If that's the case-!"
"Hey! G-give those back!"
Eiriko takes Haru's glasses and runs back toward the entrance of the classroom.
"Hahaha! You are in no position to tell me what to do! If you really want them back, why don't you come over here and get them back from me?"
To Haru, those glasses don't mean anything to him. His eyesight is fine even without them. After all, the glasses are fake.
To keep this game of charades going, Haru gets up from his seat and runs after Eiriko. "Oops!" Eiriko side steps and dodges Haru's attack. "Huh? Where did you go?"
"Over here~" Listening to her voice, he can tell she was right behind him. He turns around and tries again. This time, Eiriko sidestepped again, but this time she set one foot out and trips Haru.
"Ahh?!" Haru trips on her foot and loses his footing. His momentum carries over and causes him to stumble before crashing into the wall.
"Hahaha! Man, what a stupid loser you are!"
"Ahem!"
"Ah…"
Haru collects himself and leans against the wall he crashed on. Looking through the slits of his hair, he can see Eiriko talking to someone.
"Sarada-san, by any chance are you bullying Ena-kun again?"
"What~? Of course not! What makes you think that?"
"Sarade-san." The girl spoke with an authoritative tone. "Please hand them over."
"Geez. It was just a joke." Eiriko handed over his glasses and then stormed out of the classroom. "Hmph!"
"A~aah. What a pain she has become."
"Um, Can I have my glasses please?" Turning her head to the voice, Haru who was sitting against the wall was holding out his hand. "Oh, just a moment!"
The girl runs over to him and gets down to her knee. "Here let me put it on you." The girl insists.
"Ah! No, there's no need for that. I can put them on myself. Besides, I don't want you to see my face." Haru says in a panic.
"Now, now, how bad can your face be? Here-! Uhh… your hair is making this hard to do. Hold on."
"W-wait-!" Ignoring his plea, the girl pushes his hair aside and discovers something that took her breath away.
Narrow and charming green eyes that were moist from embarrassment. If Haru wasn't embarrassed and looked at her benefactor with his normal expression, she would've been seduced by him; no, she was already seduced by his eyes. She was captivated by them
". . ."
"U-um… My glasses please…"
". . ."
"Please stop staring… it's embarrassing."
"O-oh I'm sorry Ena-kun. Here you go."
"Thank you."
"Ano… Ena-kun. Do you know who I am?"
"...Class representative Hiyori Shina."
The girl who helped Haru was Hiyori Shina, his class representative. The way her straight long black hair fell down must've made the others in the class think that she kissed him because they couldn't see what the two were doing. Her grey eyes were so fixated on his seductive emerald gaze that she lost herself in them.
"Yeah…"
"Ano, Hiyori-san, can you get off? Everyone's looking over here."
"Eh???" Shina got up and looked around. Everyone in class was watching them. Some of the girls were blushing while some of the guys were grinding their teeth and shooting jealous glares at Haru.
"I'm sorry Ena-kun!" Shina bows her head profusely. "Ah-!" Haru gets up in a hurry and calms her down. "It's alright Hiyori-san! Please there's no need to bow your head. …If anything I should be the one who should bow his head to you."
"Hm?" Shina raises her head and sees Haru bowing his head. "Thank you for getting my glasses back from Sarada-san."
"A~a… You're welcome Ena-kun. Well then, enjoy the rest of your lunch."
"You too Hiyori-san." Shina smiles and waves goodbye to Haru. Haru mimics her and then goes back to his seat.
This is bad! She got a good look at my face! Calm down Haru. If I continue being the despised person, everything will go back to normal.
Haru resumes eating his lunch and reading his novel, but he can't help but feel like his peaceful life just ended.
From the rooftops,
Ena-kun. Who are you? You hide your face, but you have the most charming faces I've ever seen in my life. You're quite an interesting person. I'll make sure to keep a close eye on you. You'll become my own little secret.
Haru had a feeling someone was watching him from the rooftops. Another spring breeze blew into the classroom. He faces the breeze as a guise to look over at the rooftop. After scanning the visible area from his desk, there was no one and went back to reading.
Am I imagining things?
