Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The Whispering Woods lived up to their call. An eerie hush hung heavy inside the air, damaged only by the rustle of unseen leaves and the occasional snap of a ghostly twig underfoot. Eldric, his cloak clinging damply to his pores and skin, huddled closer to Sylvia. They were traversing the treacherous woodland for two days; their progress was hampered by the dense undergrowth and the unsettling atmosphere.

"Are you positive that is the way, Sylvia?" Kael grumbled, his voice slightly a whisper. The ever-stoic warrior appeared unnerved by means of the unnatural silence.

"The map points north," Sylvia answered, her voice tight. "However, in a place like this, cardinal instructions appear to shift."

A low moan echoed around them, sending shivers down Eldric's spine. He gripped the hilt of his father's sword, the worn leather a familiar consolation in his clammy palm. He glanced lower back at Grimm, the hulking golem lumbering in the back of them. With his glowing amber eyes and stony countenance, Grimm became a beacon of protection within the unsettling gloom.

"Do you hear that?" Lyra asked, her normally crisp voice sounding strained. She clutched her team of workers even tighter, a skinny layer of frost already coating its tip.

any other moan, this time closer, followed through the unsettling crackle of dead branches underfoot. Eldric felt his heart hammer in his chest.

"Something's far," Thorne stated, his voice low, "it's huge." The cursed prince drew his twin blades, their polished metal glinting faintly within the dim, mild filtering via the canopy.

abruptly, a towering parent burst from the undergrowth. It changed into a mammoth creature without difficulty, two times the size of a person, with fur as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Razor-sharp claws tipped its long, muscular hands, and its mouth was a gaping maw full of rows of jagged teeth. It let out a bone-chilling roar that seemed to shake the very floor beneath their toes.

"Shadowclaw!" Kael exclaimed, his voice laced with horror. "I thought these had been extinct!"

"It looks as if a person forgot to inform this one," Sylvia muttered, drawing her daggers.

Before Eldric could react, Kael and Thorne had already been charging on the beast. Kael, ever the disciplined fighter, landed a blow on its leg, drawing a pained snarl from the creature. Thorne, with an almost feral grace, danced across the Shadowclaw, slashing at its hands together with his blades.

Eldric knew he had to assist them one way or another. He glanced at Lyra, who nodded curtly. Taking a deep breath, he targeted the air around him, drawing the raw electricity into his palms. With a flick of his wrist, he unleashed a bolt of charged lightning at the Shadowclaw. The creature shrieked as the strength coursed through its body, momentarily lovely.

This brief respite changed into all Sylvia wished. With a rapid motion, she darted into the back of the Shadowclaw and plunged a dagger into its back. The beast roared in rage and lashed out blindly, sending Sylvia flying through the air. She landed hard on the forest floor, a gasp escaping her lips.

Alarmed, Eldric released himself towards her, pushing Grimm in front to shield him from the Shadowclaw's counterattack. Grimm, seemingly unfazed, grabbed the creature's arm in a metal grip, his eyes glowing fiercely.

In the meantime, Lyra unleashed a torrent of ice shards, peppering the Shadowclaw's back. The creature roared once more, thrashing wildly. It controlled to interrupt Grimm's grasp and became its glowing eyes closer to the frost mage.

Eldric reached Sylvia simply as the Shadowclaw lunged toward Lyra. He shoved Sylvia out of the way, taking the total brunt of the assault. The creature's claws raked throughout his chest, leaving deep gashes and sending a jolt of searing ache through him.

"Eldric!" Sylvia screamed, rushing to his side.

Eldric pushed her again, his imaginative and prescient blurring at the rims. He had to focus and fight again. He closed his eyes, channeling his grief, his worry, and all his terrible emotions right into a burning inferno inside him. While he opened his eyes again, they glowed with a dark purple light.

A wave of necrotic power surged from his hand, engulfing the Shadowclaw. The creature shrieked at an extraordinary pitch, a sound of pure, unadulterated terror. Its black fur seemed to wither and decay, and its sparkling eyes dimmed. In a matter of seconds, the ferocious beast crumbled into a pile of ash, leaving behind a lingering, heady scent of rot and decay.

Eldric stumbled on his lower back, tired and dizzy. The dark energy had ebbed away, leaving him trembling and hollowed out. Sylvia rushed to him, her eyes extensive with the situation.

"Eldric, what have you carried out?" she whispered. The silence that accompanied the Shadowclaw's loss of life turned into something heavy and unsettling. Eldric leaned in opposition to Sylvia, his breath coming in ragged gashes. The raw electricity he'd unleashed still crackled in his fingertips, leaving a sour flavor in his mouth.

"I do not know," he rasped, his voice susceptible.

Lyra materialized beside them, her face light. "Did you... use shadow magic?"

Eldric looked down at his hands, his arms slick with a chilly sweat. The dark energy had felt different. now, not just like the managed tendrils of shadow magic he'd glimpsed in Zara's repertoire. This turned into an uncooked, uncontrolled strength that resonated with a deep, primal darkness inside him.

"It simply passed off," he muttered, feeling a surge of disgrace. "I…"

Kael, ever the pragmatist, sheathed his sword. "Anything it became, it saved our lives. Arguing approximately it later." He strode toward the pile of ash that was the Shadowclaw, his expression grim.

Thorne, who was staring intently at Eldric, subsequently spoke. "That strength... it felt exclusive to shadow magic." His voice became laced with an atypical combination of curiosity and unease.

Eldric nodded, unable to satisfy his gaze. Disgrace gnawed at him. He'd sworn to control his powers and to by no means permit the darkness to devour him. but, in the warmth of the moment, he'd succumbed, unleashing that terrifying electricity without a conscious idea.

Sylvia kneeled beside him, her eyes filled with concern, but a flicker of something else... expertise? "Permit's get you out of here first," she stated lightly, supporting him to his toes.

As they endured their trek, a heavy silence settled over the institution. The near-death stumble and the revelation of Eldric's unusual magic had forged a pall. They pressed on, the dense undergrowth seeming to mock their gradual progress.

Hours later, they emerged from the oppressive forest. remedy flooded Eldric as he took within sight earlier than him. A sprawling meadow bathed in the golden mild of the sun stretched before them. In the distance, a plume of smoke rose from a cluster of homes, promising the comfort of heat and refuge.

"It looks as if it were a small village," Thorne stated, the first to interrupt the silence. "Perhaps they've got healers and bandages."

Eldric winced as he touched the gashes on his chest. The injuries had been deep, but fortuitously, they hadn't punctured any vital organs. He desperately needed scientific interest.

With renewed desire, they quickened their pace toward the village. As they approached, a sense of unease settled over them. The homes were regarded as abandoned, an unnatural quiet placed heavy within the air.

Kael drew his sword, his face grim. "Something's incorrect."

Sylvia, ever the scout, crept forward, her moves silent and fluid. She returned moments later, her brow furrowed.

"The village is empty," she said. "No sign of conflict, just... not anything."

A chilly dread gripped Eldric. This wasn't right. The unexpected disappearance of the villagers, the eerie silence—all of it screamed of foul play.

"There is smoke coming from one of the homes," Thorne talked about.

Eldric felt a knot of apprehension tighten in his stomach. He knew they'd do research, even supposing it meant strolling right into a trap.

With a silent nod, they cautiously approached the supply of smoke. It was a small cottage, its wood door putting open precariously. Sylvia drove the door open, revealing a ransacked interior. Upstairs, they found a single clue: a young lady's doll, its porcelain face smeared with a dark, viscous liquid.

"They were taken," Kael growled, his voice tight with barely suppressed rage. "And judging with the aid of this..." he gestured at the doll, "likely by way of Malachus's men."

A chilly anger surged through Eldric. They had been getting closer, but at what value? Innocent lives had been being sacrificed inside the archmage's twisted recreation. He clenched his fists, the memory of his personal past fueling his clearing up. He would not permit Malachus to win.

Lyra kneeled beside the doll, her face etched with chilling sorrow. "We want to discover these human beings," she said, her voice company. "And stop Malachus earlier than he takes extra."

Eldric met her gaze, a newfound determination burning in his eyes. "We will," he declared. "But first, we need a plan. And a way to control... He trailed off, gesturing in the direction of his personal hand, "This."

The organization remained silent, the weight of their state of affairs settling on them. They were on the cusp of something huge, something that might tip the balance of strength in the shattered realms. However, the route beforehand changed into one fraught with risk, and the value of Eldric's growing electricity remained a chilling unknown.
