Chapter 9 - chapter 9

Eldric squinted through the dense foliage, sweat dripping down his brow. Days of relentless pursuit had worn him skinny. starvation gnawed at his belly, and the ever-gift chill of the Whisperwood clung to him like a shroud.

They were following the spectral trail left with the aid of Malachus for what felt like an eternity. Due to the fact that they had escaped the fiery ruins of Eldoria, the fellowship had ventured deep into the heart of Whisperwood, a sprawling wooded area whispered to be haunted via the lingering essences of forgotten magic. The air hung heavy with an oppressive silence, damaged only by the rustle of unseen creatures and the occasional cry of a distant bird.

"Are you positive we're going the right way, Eldric?" Sylvia, ever the pragmatist, voiced the query gnawing at all of us's minds. Her voice echoed surprisingly inside the stillness of the woods.

Eldric wiped the sweat from his eyes, the emerald pendant around his neck pulsing faintly in opposition to his skin. "The shard... it is leading us deeper." He wasn't entirely relaxed counting on the strength of the Earth Shard, not after coming across his forbidden affinity for necromancy. but Malachus turned into remaining in, leaving them with little desire.

Kael, ever the pessimist, let loose a humorless scoff. "brilliant. leading us deeper into this creepy forest. just what we need."

Lyra, her face a mask of stoicism, shot him a withering glance. "Silence, Ironheart. All of us share the same predicament."

a sprig snapped in the back of them, sending a jolt of adrenaline via Eldric. He whirled around, his hand instinctively grasping for the hilt of his father's sword. The others were healthy, guns drawn, and eyes cautious.

A small, hairy creature emerged from the back of a towering oak, its large eyes huge with innocent curiosity. It was unlike any animal Eldric had ever seen—a move between a squirrel and a rabbit, with luminous green fur and feathery appendages on its tail.

"Clean," Grimm rumbled, his deep voice a welcome counterpoint to the aggravating atmosphere. "It appears harmless."

The creature tilted its head, its outsized ears twitching. Then, with a chittering sound, it scurried deeper into the undergrowth.

Sylvia was secure, reducing her dagger. "Properly, that becomes..."

Before she ought to end, a guttural growl ripped through the air, silencing her right away. The floor trembled below their toes, and a massive shadow emerged from the back of a thick veil of timber.

A hulking creature, without problems twice the scale of a human, lumbered closer to them. Its fur, a disheveled black, bristled with fury. Razor-sharp claws glinted in the dim light filtering through the cover, and sparkling red eyes scanned the institution with predatory hunger.

"What within the seven nation-states is that?" Thorne muttered, a flicker of fear in his generally stoic eyes.

"A Shadow Fang," Lyra hissed, a flicker of recognition in her icy gaze. "Noxious beasts are attracted to robust, terrible emotions. It seems like someone stirred them up."

Eldric felt a surge of worry. Their encounter with the creature in Eldoria had already proved their resilience, which turned into wearing thin. He could not manage to pay for every other reckless combat. However, the Shadow Fang's presence confirmed they have been on the right track. Malachus' impact is undoubtedly attracting those dark creatures.

"We want a plan," Eldric said, his voice steady regardless of the pounding in his chest.

Sylvia, ever the opportunist, already had a solution in mind. "Distraction? I will create one."

She winked at Eldric, then vanished into the undergrowth with a rustle of leaves. Kael rolled his eyes; however, a small, grudging smile tugged on the corner of his mouth.

The Shadow Fang set free every other deafening roar and charged. Eldric gritted his teeth and raised his sword, preparing to satisfy the beast head-on.

Lyra, ever the pragmatist, unleashed a flurry of frost magic, momentarily slowing the creature's enhance. Sparks flew as Eldric channeled his earth magic, summoning a jagged rock formation that, in part, blocked the creature's course.

Grimm remained at the back, his big form a shield of iron and stone. He stood company in opposition to the Shadow Fang's enraged swipes, his deep voice booming as he wrestled the beast.

The war created a brief window of opportunity. Eldric noticed Sylvia emerge from a nearby thicket, a mischievous glint in her eyes. With a flick of her wrist, she sent a bath of shimmering dirt toward the Shadow Fang.

The dust exploded in a blinding flash of mild, momentarily disorienting light. Seizing the threat, Eldric unleashed a torrent of wind magic, channeling the strength of the Air Shard nestled within his percent. The surprising gust sent the Shadow Fang reeling, knocking it off balance. It stumbled and returned, blinded by the shimmering dust and buffeted with the aid of the unexpected wind. Eldric pressed his gain, charging forward with renewed power. He channeled the Earth Shard's strength all over again, feeling a surge of uncooked power route through him. The ground beneath the Shadow Fang's big paws trembled and heaved, erupting in a community of thorny vines that wrapped tightly around its legs, hindering its motion.

The enraged beast roared in frustration, thrashing its body towards the magical constraints. Its crimson eyes locked on Eldric, burning with hatred. It strained in opposition to the vines, letting out a deafening screech that sent shivers down every person's spine.

From the back, Grimm let out a guttural roar, drawing the Shadow Fang's attention. With an effective lunge, the golem slammed his huge fist into the beast's aspect, sending it crashing against a nearby tree. The effect dispersed a bath of leaves dropping rain and shook the very floor they stood on.

Seizing every other chance, Kael, with a fantastically agile soar, landed at the Shadow Fang's lower back. He plunged his enchanted dagger deep into the beast's fleshy shoulder, twisting the blade with a grimace. The creature shrieked in pain, the sound echoing through the silent forest.

The battle raged on, a chaotic whirlwind of magic and metal. Eldric fought with a desperate ferocity, his connection to the Earth Shard granting him unnatural energy and resilience. Sylvia materialized from the shadows, daggers flashing as she danced around the lumbering beast, exploiting any weakness it found. Lyra, her face a mask of awareness, unleashed every other wave of frost magic, in addition hampering the beast's actions.

The Shadow Fang, though powerful, appeared beaten by the coordinated onslaught. It thrashed and roared, its dark aura beginning to flicker. Ultimately, with a coronary heart-wrenching howl, the creature collapsed, its tremendous form dissolving into wisps of dark smoke that dissipated into the air.

Exhausted, however exhilarated, the group stood panting, catching their breaths within the heavy silence that followed the war. Eldric surveyed the scene, his body aching with every movement. He could not help but sense a pang of guilt. Those creatures, despite their ferocity, appeared to be mere pawns in a bigger game. Malachus' impact was corrupting the very material of the forest.

"We cannot relax for long," Thorne's voice reduced via the silence, a hint of grim willpower in his tone. "Malachus might not stop, and neither can we."

Eldric nodded, a newfound solution hardening his gaze. He had a feeling this had changed into just the beginning of their demanding situations. The deeper they ventured into the Whisperwood, the closer they became to confronting not only Malachus but also the darkness inside himself.
