Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3

The mini-forest near Rex's place was a hidden gem, known only to the local residents. It was a small but dense patch of greenery, filled with towering trees, winding paths, and the gentle sounds of nature. The forest had an enchanting aura, with sunlight filtering through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The forest floor was covered with a thick carpet of leaves and twigs, and the air was filled with the calls of various animals, creating a symphony of natural sounds.

Excited about their new adventure, the trio set out immediately after their heartfelt conversation. Rex led the way, his enthusiasm infectious. Martins followed closely, chatting animatedly about the various tech projects he hoped to work on in the future. Prince brought up the rear, his eyes taking in the beauty of the forest, already mentally cataloging the different plant species they encountered.

As they entered the forest, the air grew cooler, filled with the scent of pine and earth. The sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling underfoot added to the sense of adventure. The boys navigated the narrow paths, their laughter echoing through the trees. They stopped frequently to examine interesting plants and marvel at the wildlife they spotted along the way.

"Look at that old tree!" Martins exclaimed as they approached the heart of the forest. A massive, ancient tree stood before them, its trunk wide enough for all three of them to wrap their arms around it and still not meet.

"Let's check it out," Prince suggested, already heading towards it.

They spent some time exploring the area around the tree, sharing stories and making new memories. They climbed up onto its sturdy branches, feeling like children again as they looked out over the forest from their elevated perch.

As the day wore on, they found a sunny clearing where they laid out a picnic. They sat in a circle, talking about their hopes and dreams for the future. The conversation was filled with laughter and a few heartfelt moments, as they reassured each other that their bond would remain strong despite the upcoming changes.

"What if I told you that this place used to be filled with fruit trees? Would you believe me?" Rex asked.

"Then what happened to it?" Prince asked.

"People happened. They bought the land, cleared it of the fruits, and left. The place became a forest again. It's almost like they were sent by the devil to do that," Rex explained.

"Let's leave a sign here and come back later," Martins suggested. He picked up a stone and carved a small mark on the tree before they continued their journey.

Unbeknownst to them, they had tampered with another world beyond their imaginations. They had breached the barrier between their world and a world of pain and anguish. Two shadowy figures emerged from the tree, their presence marked by a chilling aura.

"I don't know why, but part of me wants to keep going, while another part of me wants to run back home," Rex said uneasily.

"Bro, stop being lazy and let's move forward," Martins said.

"Fine, let's continue," Rex agreed. He took out his phone and snapped pictures, capturing their adventure, though Prince covered his face in all the photos. "Remind me to take a picture of us by that tree again," Rex said.

The trio continued moving forward, until they were an hour's walk away from Rex's house.

"I think we should head back now," Prince suggested.

"Not yet," Martins said, clearly enjoying the adventure.

"What are you doing so deep in the woods?" a voice suddenly called out, startling them. They turned to see a tattered-looking man, resembling an early caveman.

"Nothing, sir. Our house is just down there. We came to explore," Rex said nervously. The man gave them a suspicious look before walking away.

Summoning more courage, they continued on their path. A few steps further, they encountered another strange-looking man. He approached them with a cutlass in his hand, questioned them thoroughly, and then left.

"I'm not waiting for a third person to come before I head home," Rex said. They all agreed and began walking back.

As they neared the old tree, the forest grew eerily quiet. The shadows seemed to lengthen and darken, and an uneasy feeling settled over them.

"We should hurry," Prince whispered.

Suddenly, the shadowy figures they had unknowingly awakened emerged from behind the old tree. Their forms were dark and amorphous, eyes glowing with a sinister light. The air around them grew cold, and a palpable sense of dread filled the air.

"What is that?" Martins gasped, his voice trembling.

Before they could react, the shadows lunged at them. Rex felt an icy grip around his arm as he was pulled backward. He watched in horror as Martins and Prince were enveloped by the darkness, their screams muffled by the shadowy forms.

"No! Let them go!" Rex shouted, struggling against the cold grip. But his efforts were in vain. The shadows tightened their hold, and with a final, desperate cry, Martins and Prince were spirited away, disappearing into the darkness.

Rex fell to his knees, the forest spinning around him. The shadows dissipated, leaving an eerie silence in their wake. Alone and terrified, Rex could only stare at the spot where his friends had vanished, his heart pounding with fear and sorrow.

Gathering what strength he had left, Rex stood up and ran back through the forest, tears streaming down his face. He vowed to find a way to rescue his friends, no matter the cost. The adventure that had started with laughter and dreams had turned into a nightmare, but Rex knew he couldn't give up. His bond with Martins and Prince was too strong to be severed by shadows.
