Amelia was angry.

No, she was furious.

She did not understand why Leila disappeared without a word.

Sure, she did not want to be a charity case for Leila with regard to the apprenticeship with Edgar Farrel, but she was pissed that Leila disappeared without saying a word. She was angry on Wednesday for breakfast, and she could not stand it.

Amelia's fury simmered beneath the surface while she ate, a tempest contained only by the walls of the Campbell estate. The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, casting a warm glow over the table, but it did nothing to thaw the chill in Amelia's heart.

As she sat at the table, her fingers clenched around a cup of tea, the absence of Leila felt like a gaping hole in the room.
