The only explanation was that Leila had some tricks to protect herself. She grew up in an isolated village, so she probably learned some ways to guard against discovery from those old folks.
That meant Silas had to learn all he could from Charlotte about her parents. He did not like using her, but he never shied away from doing what was necessary. And understanding Leila was crucial for his plans.
"I do not know if I can call my upbringing wonderful," Charlotte said with a distant look in her eyes. "My parents were rather strict with all of their children, but I think I was a disappointment because I was so mediocre."
Silas felt a little heartache for her. "That cannot possibly be true. I understand that you completed your postgraduate studies when you were twenty. If that is mediocre, the rest of us do not stand a chance."
Charlotte laughed a little bitterly before looking at Silas solemnly.
