Chapter 4 - Player System

"Land of trials?" James echoed his confusion.

The Administrator helped clear up his confusion by saying,

"It's a place where beings from all over the universe are brought to become Players. Players undergo trials to become stronger. Once a player proves himself to be satisfactorily strong, they are allowed to leave with all the power they have accumulated in the Land of Trials."

"How can a player prove himself?" James asked.

"A player can prove himself to be satisfactorily strong by passing the ultimate trial. Don't waste your time pondering what it is. You are too far from being considered worthy enough to participate in it," The administrator replied.

Outwardly, James nodded, expressing without words that he would follow the Administrator's advice. Inwardly, he scoffed at its words.

The last few dozen chapters of the novel "Tales of My Regression" he had read before being pulled into the Land of Trials were all about Melody trying her hardest to know more about the Ultimate Trial as it was the way to get out of the Land of Trials.

Thus, James had great insight into it. He didn't need to ponder to understand what it was all about.

He knew it could be triggered after passing a considerable number of trials. He also knew it was the hardest trial a player could face in the Land of Trials. So unless a player had absolute confidence that they can pass it, they shouldn't trigger it even if they have the chance to.

"Players who hesitate or look for another way out typically fall victim to the dangers of the Land of Trials. Even if they somehow survive, the other players will eat them alive sooner or later. Do you know why I am telling you this? You must be feeling frustrated, separated from your family and pulled apart from your life of comfort, but don't let your emotions affect your actions. Complete the trials with all you've got!"

Maybe James's obedience and ability to remain rational and cool-headed despite being pulled into an uncertain and dangerous situation impressed the Administrator. It gave him a reason to give it his all going forward.

"I will!"

James's plan was never just to survive the Land of Trials. It was to use it as a stepping stone to become strong enough to leave it and return to his home world so that he could reunite with his family and friends. So he readily agreed with the administrator's words.

"Anyways, can I ask why I was selected out of billions of people?" he asked this question as there was no answer to it even in the novel.

"People are chosen randomly. You just happened to be chosen," the administrator replied honestly. From its tone, it could be sensed that it was being truthful.

James came to a saddening realization. He and the people chosen before him to be summoned to the Land of Trials were just suffering from a case of bad luck!

James asked the administrator another question that had been bothering him for some time.

"What's the purpose of the Land of Trials?"

If he had read the novel "Tales of My Regression" to the very end, he might have had an answer to this question, but he wasn't able to as he was summoned to the Land of Trials before he could finish reading it to the very end.

His smartphone wasn't with him now as he had put it down on the table after using it for twelve hours straight in order to rub his strained eyes and crack his tired fingers just when he was pulled over.

It meant he couldn't resume the novel from where he left off.

"You will get the answer to that after you pass the ultimate trial," the administrator replied to James.

It continued, "We have a limited window of time for this interaction so I will get to explaining. When a person is summoned to the Land of Trials, a system is integrated into their beings. You also have it. This system has a lot of features. Explaining it to you by mouth will waste precious time, so I will just transfer it to you."

Immediately after saying those words, the administrator flashed up to James and gently tapped his glabella.

James was startled when the administrator suddenly teleported in front of him, but he was too slow to react. He could do nothing to dodge the administrator's touch.

Ugh!

Before he knew it, a large amount of information began to drill into his mind. It was about the system that everyone receives when they are summoned to the Land of Trials.

The process of memory transfer was not painless.

It was extremely painful.

James felt like his brain was cracked open and lava was poured into it.

His eyes turned bloodshot and he grunted like a beast, but he didn't collapse to the ground like a broken doll.

He somehow remained standing tall, earning a glance of admiration from the administrator.

Shortly after, the pain James was experiencing died down and clarity returned to him.

He went over his new memories.

The system was a guide. It was also the only key to becoming strong at a rapid pace in the land of trials.

Players can use their systems to unlock classes. After unlocking a class, they can learn spells and skills related to their class.

The system alone wasn't enough to unlock classes or buy things related to it.

Trial points were also needed.

Trial points can be earned by completing trials.
