Chapter 32 - THE RED-HAIRED LADY

Time stilled.

The world seemed to freeze around me, the sounds of the battle fading into a muted hum. My breath came in ragged gasps, and I could feel my blood pounding in my ears.

The Rogues' angry snarles broke me out of the trance, their black eyes that peered directly into mine was like staring into a lifeless being with no soul.

Desperation clawed at me as the rogues began to close in. Slowly. Like how predators stalk their prey before the attack. I turned to Alexander who was too occupied with fighting the other rogues, and my heart sank. Distracting him wasn't going to do either of us any good.

Just as they were about to strike, I fell on my knees, moaning quietly, as I endured the pain of shifting. Every bone in my body cracked, morphing into another shape. My human form gave way to the primal essence of my wolf.

This was the third time I was shifting since I discovered my wolf, so it was still as agonizing as ever. The first time had been the first full moon after my eighteenth birthday. I was already married to Damian then, and it had been one of the worst pains I'd endured.

The second was while I was trying to escape Damian which didn't turn out well, after I was hunted down by his Beta, Ethan, with some Lycan troops. I knew I could barely escape them then, just like how I know it was stupid to go head on with these Rogues, but I had a better chance of escaping with my wolf, than in my human form.

With a final, agonizing snap, my transformation completed. I stood on four legs, my senses heightened, every muscle coiled. I looked down at my paws that digged into the ground, with my silver fur.

Even as the rogues snarled at me with their fangs baring out, I stood still, acknowledging the superiority in power. It was stupid to challenge a being who could rip you into shreds with a flick of their claws.

They lunged at me, and I ran into the alley beside me with all my might. They chased after me, howling into the darkness from the alley.

In mere seconds, the rogues caught up to me cause they were quicker, more agile. Darting between buildings and into different alleys didn't offer much help. It was even surprising how they hadn't put me down with their numbers.

A surge of terror struck me when I turned to the next alley to find more rogues charging at me. Their howls pierced through the dark night, inviting more wolves.

I quickly recovered from the shock, and darted into another alley. It was hard to avoid the alleys the pack of Rogues we're coming from with their howls scattered everywhere, but I tried to concentrate on the sounds coming from each alley I ran into.

I ran into a strange place that looked like the heart of the place, and abruptly stopped.

I looked around the desolated place. It was like a town square, but smaller. There was a huge well at the center of the place, and different alleys were connected to it.

The well looked really old, covered in moss and ivy. I could barely see it since the sun had set. The only source of light was the moon which was beginning to cast its glow on the town, but it was still dark from the shadows of the buildings.

A strange force pulled me to the well, and I walked to it as if I'd been put other a spell, the same feeling I had from my dream back in the dungeon I was enslaved.

I couldn't tell if it was the murmurs that came from the well that pulled me to it, or the tiny cries of suffering, like they were people inside it.

Before I could reach the well, a claw tore through the flesh of my right foreleg to my bone. Like a cannonball, the force the rogue used in attacking me, pushed me to a building by the side.

I let out a pained howl as I felt my ribs get crushed from the collision with the wall before I fell with my side on the floor. Tears clouded my vision from the intense pain. This was the difference in strength between a Lycan and an Omega.

More wolves came from the other alleys.

Seeing the increase in their numbers, I struggled to stand with my blurry vision, and my trembling body, but it was impossible. I could feel my injured leg throb to the point where walking or even leaping became an issue. It felt like a thousand fire ants latched onto my injured feet and bit on it all at once.

A minute passed, yet, I wasn't healing.

Blood oozed out nonstop from it. I was supposed to be healing, yet, I wasn't. My heart thundered in my chest as the wolves started walking toward me. There was no way to run to. I couldn't run, even if I wanted to.

Hopelessness clawed at my mind, the same one I felt when I was about to be executed, except that this time, Alexander wasn't here to save me. No one was. I was going to be ripped into pieces by these Rogues.

I looked around. I had envisioned different scenarios of where I'd be killed one day, but never a place like this. This was the cruelest of them.

Breathing out softly, I was about to to close my eyes to my death when they fell on the entrance of the building I lay beside.

I didn't have any time to think before I dragged myself toward the entrance, with all my last strength.

The wolves charged at me when they noticed I was going to escape but when I entered the building, they didn't follow me. They just stood at the entrance for a while before retracting their steps.

I dragged myself further into the building even as I listened to their footsteps that faded with each second. Their sudden withdrawal was alarming, but after a minute passed and I didn't hear any footstep, I tried to calm my beating heart.

"We finally meet, Penelope."

My head snapped in the direction the familiar beautiful voice came from within building, and I stared at the beautiful red- haired lady that was smiling at me, the same one from my dream.
