PENELOPE'S POV
I stared at myself through my bathroom mirror, my fingers tracing the red handprints on my neck, like I'd been strangled. I couldn't remember any incident that led to the scars, and I certainly couldn't fathom how they had appeared overnight. But they were there, and as I traced the line, I nearly moaned. My skin still felt tender, as if the grip had only just been released.
A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. "Miss Penelope, are you alright?" Concern was etched in Amaris's voice.
She was the one who told me about the prints. I'd seen the dread in her eyes on noticing them, even as she watched me walk into the bathroom.
I took a deep breath, willing myself to stay calm. "I'm fine," I lied, opening the door and stepping out of it. Her eyes immediately fell on it.
