Chapter 2 - Cats

Lin Xiao, engrossed in examining his status, suddenly remembered the daily mission function.

"Show me the daily missions,"

Lin Xiao requested eagerly, his hope of gaining superpowers as quickly as possible shining through his words.

[Daily Missions]

[Run 1 km - Reward: +0.5 Stamina +10 Exp]

[Complete 10 push-ups - Reward: +0.5 Strength +10 Exp]

[Practice public speaking for 10 minutes - Reward: +0.5 Charisma +10 Exp]

[Read a book for 30 minutes - Reward: +0.5 Intelligence +10 Exp]

[Meditate for 15 minutes - Reward: +0.5 Mana +10 Exp]

Looking at the daily missions, Lin Xiao was surprised to see that a 0.5 increase in stats each day was quite significant. With that kind of progress, he couldn't help but imagine himself becoming a world-record Olympic athlete if he kept it up daily.

His laughter filled the room as he entertained all the possibilities. However, his dream bubble was suddenly burst when the system interjected:

[After reaching 10 stat points, every daily mission will only give 0.05 stat points]

Lin Xiao's shock was palpable as he began to crunch the numbers. If he could only gain 0.05 stat points per daily mission after reaching 10 points, it would take him approximately 20 days to accumulate just 1 additional stat point.

"What's the point of even having a system?"

Lin Xiao muttered bitterly, his disappointment evident. It dawned on him that even without the system, if he diligently did those activities, he should still be able to get stronger.

While lost in his thoughts, Lin Xiao was jolted back to reality by his mother's voice calling from downstairs.

"Lin Xiao, get downstairs! Don't you want a cat? The shop will close in 1 hour, and we should go as quickly as possible," Mother Lin urged.

"Coming!"

Lin Xiao dashed downstairs without a second thought. As important as the system was, getting a cat meant the world to him, no matter how silly it might seem to others.

Lin Xiao hurried downstairs and found his mother already waiting in the car. Without hesitation, he climbed in beside her.

In just a few minutes, Mother Lin and Lin Xiao arrived in front of a cozy pet shop named [Paws & Whiskers Haven].

Lin Xiao quickly went inside to get a cat as soon as possible.

Chuckling at her son's enthusiasm, Mother Lin followed closely behind him, ready to share in the joy of choosing their new pet.

As Lin Xiao stepped inside [Paws & Whiskers Haven] he was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The cozy interior was adorned with colorful fish tanks lining one wall, their tranquil occupants swimming gracefully in the water.

On the opposite side, rows of cages housed playful kittens and puppies, their curious eyes and wagging tails adding to the lively ambiance of the shop.

Lin Xiao's gaze drifted to the counter, where a girl around his age stood, engrossed in attending to a customer's inquiries.

But it wasn't just her diligent manner that caught his attention; it was the mesmerizing beauty of her eyes. They were captivating, drawing him in like magnets, with a depth that seemed to hold countless stories.

Her hair cascaded in silky, long waves, framing her face, but a mask obscured her features.

As Lin Xiao caught sight of the girl around his age, his demeanor shifted subtly.

His voice took on a deeper tone, and he suppressed his initial excitement, wanting to appear more composed and cool in front of her.

With his mother by his side, they made their way up to the counter, Lin Xiao trying his best to maintain an air of confidence in the girl's presence.

Despite having acquired a system, Lin Xiao remained a teenage boy with a shy heart. Observing her son's reticence, Mother Lin stepped forward with a warm smile.

"Hello," she began, addressing the girl behind the counter. "We're here to buy a cat for our family. Could you please help us?"

The girl behind the counter first glanced at Lin Xiao before swiftly redirecting her attention to Mother Lin.

"Do you have a breed in mind? What kind of cat are you looking for?" she inquired, her voice friendly and eager to assist.

Feeling his mother's gaze on him, Lin Xiao cleared his throat and mustered his courage to speak up.

"I want a white cat," he said, his voice a touch deeper than usual as he tried to convey a sense of confidence.

The girl behind the counter was momentarily taken aback by Lin Xiao's weird voice tone, but she quickly regained her composure. With a nod, she motioned for them to follow her and led them to the section of the shop dedicated to cats.

In the cats section of the shop, Lin Xiao's attention was immediately drawn to a particular cage.

Despite its size, it only housed two cats, both of them adorable babies—one white and the other black.

There was something about those cats that captivated Lin Xiao, stirring a sense of connection within him. He felt drawn to it for reasons he couldn't quite explain.

"I want that white cat,"

Lin Xiao declared, his voice firm as he pointed toward the cage.

The girl's gaze shifted to the cage, and she sighed before speaking. "They come as a package deal. If you want the white cat, you'll have to take the black one too. Otherwise, if the white cat goes missing for even 15 minutes, the black cat starts bashing its head against the cage," she explained solemnly.

Hearing the girl's explanation, Lin Xiao turned to his mother with a pleading expression, trying his best to appear sad and cute.

"Please," he implored softly.

Feeling a tug at her heartstrings as she looked at her son's earnest expression, Mother Lin finally relented with a sigh.

"Okay, we will buy them," she agreed, unable to resist her son's plea.

Soon, both Lin Xiao and Mother Lin emerged from the shop, a small cat bag in tow. Inside were the two cats, nestled together, their adorable faces resembling tiny dolls. Their eyes sparkled like gems, adding to their irresistible charm.

As they settled into the car, Mother Lin turned to Lin Xiao with a smile.

"What should we name them?" she inquired.

Lin Xiao pondered for a moment before answering confidently.

"The white one will be Lil'blackie, and the black one will be Xiao Bai," he declared, his choice reflecting the playful bond he already felt with these cats.

Mother Lin was momentarily speechless, her son's naming choice catching her off guard. With a chuckle, she made a mental note to herself: "I will never let him name his child."
