Chapter 17 - Entering the gate

Cyrus didn't know the way to that realm. From the memories he had gained, he understood that leaving there was difficult, but returning to it was almost impossible. The realm of memories wasn't part of the realm of meaning or even one of the branches of the world tree. It existed as a separate dimension on the borders of the mortal world and the realm of meaning.

The old man smiled and pointed to Lucian's heart.

"Don't worry, the key to entering that realm is in your hands."

Cyrus held Lucian's heart up to the sunlight. The golden heart glowed under the sun's rays.

"What did I do with it? Why couldn't I see her memories then… What did she mean when she said I… turned her into a monster?" His voice was weak. He stared at Lucian's heart without blinking.

"The first law of the gods… You couldn't see the memories because gods aren't allowed to use their powers on each other."

"But he wasn't one of the gods; why couldn't I see what happened to him? Did becoming Ammonia's essence make me lose the chance to see her past? So how do I find out what really happened?" Cyrus clenched the heart in his fist and said.

"Gods don't judge their actions based on good and evil, Cyrus…"

"Maybe good and evil are complex concepts, but that doesn't mean they should be ignored, it doesn't mean they don't exist." Cyrus said.

"True, good and evil exist… but the difference between them is as thin as a hair. Someone who tries to follow the principle of good and evil is like a tightrope walker who can fall at any moment."

"So that's why it's ignored in the realm of meaning?"

"No, because only one being in the world can measure good and evil. This is also a choice, and every choice has a destiny." The old man replied.

Cyrus got his answer. The old man didn't intend to explain everything. He said just enough and remained silent, having such mastery over the conversation that it seemed he had had it thousands of times; he knew Cyrus's answers and read all his thoughts. He knew what was on his mind but gave him half-answers.

In the end, this was his spiritual journey.

Cyrus didn't know how everything began. He remembered from the middle of the journey.

"Now is not the time to hesitate, Cyrus. This path must continue. Many secrets are hidden along this path. Although many have been uncovered, each revealed secret leads to a field of unopened secrets!"

"And that's destiny… that's the torment of us beings, we never understand everything."

"But everyone understands according to their efforts, Cyrus!"

"What if that effort isn't enough? What if all your efforts to reach complete understanding are disappointing?"

"Just know this, Cyrus… sacrifices are never forgotten, everyone sees the reward of their efforts."

After saying this, a halo wrapped around Lucian's heart. Two large golden veins emitted two bright lights that sank into the green ground of the plain. Thousands of flowers and leaves grew from those bright lights, and a blurry image appeared in the heart of the gate.

"That…"

"See with your own eyes, Cyrus…"

Lucian's heart acted as the main core, keeping the gate open. Cyrus looked at the old man one last time and bowed, "Thank you for everything."

Then, without looking back, he entered the gate.
