Chapter 7 - Don't let them in

We gathered the artifacts and left the chamber, closing the stone door behind us. The basement felt even colder now, and every shadow seemed to hide a threat. We climbed the creaky stairs back to the main floor, our footsteps echoing ominously in the dark, empty hallways.

As we reached the main floor, a sudden crash echoed from behind us. We spun around, hearts pounding, but saw nothing. The silence that followed was almost more terrifying than the noise itself.

"Let's keep moving," Mr. Alex urged. "We need to find a safe place to figure out our next steps."

We made our way to the school's library, which seemed like the safest place to regroup. The rows of books and heavy wooden tables provided a small sense of comfort in the otherwise eerie building. We barricaded the doors as best we could and gathered around a large table in the center of the room.

"We need to understand more about these artifacts," Mr. Alex said, laying them out in front of us. "And why they seem to have some kind of protective power."

As we began to look through the books we'd brought from the hidden chamber, a sense of urgency filled the air. The flickering lights cast long, wavering shadows across the pages, making it difficult to focus. The tension was palpable, every creak and groan of the building putting us on edge.

Kaori found a passage that seemed important. "Here, it says something about a binding ritual. These artifacts were used to bind an ancient evil. The ritual is supposed to keep the darkness contained."

"But why is it failing now?" Ayan asked, frustration and fear in his voice. "What changed?"

"We need to find out," Mr. Alex said, his face grim. "But it looks like there's more to this school than we ever knew."

Just then, a low, guttural growl echoed from outside the library doors. We all froze, eyes wide with fear. The barricade shuddered as something heavy pounded against it.

"They're back," Miu whispered, her voice trembling.

"Get ready," Mr. Alex said, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes. "We can't let them in."

We grabbed anything we could use as a weapon, the artifacts glowing faintly as if responding to the threat. The pounding grew louder, more frantic, and the wood began to splinter.

Suddenly, the lights went out, plunging us into darkness. The only light came from the faint glow of the artifacts, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The air felt colder, the presence of the zombies just beyond the doors suffocating.

"Stay close," Mr. Alex whispered. "Don't lose hope. We'll get through this."

As we stood in the darkness, hearts pounding, the door burst open with a deafening crash. The zombies flooded in, their eyes glowing with a hunger that chilled us to the bone. We fought desperately, the glow of the artifacts giving us a small advantage.

But something was different this time. The zombies seemed more aggressive, more determined. They moved faster, their attacks more coordinated. It was as if they were being controlled by some unseen force.

"There's too many of them!" Kaori shouted, fear and panic in her voice.

"We can't hold them off forever!" Ayan added, swinging his makeshift weapon wildly.

In the chaos, I noticed something strange. The artifacts' glow was pulsing, almost as if they were reacting to the presence of the zombies. I grabbed one of them and held it high, the light growing brighter.

"Everyone, get close to the artifacts!" I yelled. "They seem to repel the zombies!"

We huddled together, holding the glowing artifacts between us. The zombies recoiled from the light, their movements slowing. But we knew this was only a temporary reprieve. We needed to find a permanent solution.

"We have to get to the source of this darkness," Mr. Alex said, his voice determined. "It's the only way to stop this once and for all."

"But where is it?" Miu asked, her voice small and scared.

"There's another mention in the journal," Mr. Alex replied. "It talks about a central point, deep within the school's foundation. If we can find it, we might be able to stop the darkness at its source."

"Then let's go," I said, gripping the artifact tightly. "Before it's too late."

With the zombies temporarily held at bay by the light of the artifacts, we made our way deeper into the school, towards the source of the evil that had plagued us. The journey was fraught with danger, and we knew that not all of us might make it out alive. But we had no choice. Our only hope was to face the darkness head-on and hope that we had the strength to overcome it.
