I knew that we shouldn't be wasting time- and that I shouldn't use up what was left of her energy. But, unable to resist, I lifted a hand to catch her hair and push it back over her shoulder.
Jesse sat back, looking at me curiously, but didn't say anything.
"Death is unavoidable," I said quietly. "But I think the correct balance is probably somewhere between us. Because sometimes death is needed to make life safe," I added, resting that hand on her stomach. "I was raised in a ruthless society, Jesse. Death is… a part of life. And wolves are predators- it's in us to kill. If Rake's judgment can be trusted, he suggests that humans in your world hide death too much- make it a shame, or a fear. I do not fear death in and of itself. I fear what would happen in the wake of my death. I fear leaving you and our son alone. But to die in service to my pack, or to save your life? I would not regret that."
