Chapter 47 - Built Different

(Valerie POV)

Jolting me awake from my sleep was a shout, "Hostile incoming! Everyone wake up!" Katsuo's voice was laced with urgency.

A bit groggy, I forced myself awake with a slap on my face. Then I "checked" my mana pool, 'Tch, barely 40%' I thought with a click of my tongue.

The ground rumbled as we felt the earth shake. In the distance, we heard loud footsteps, possibly from a giant mutated beast.

"Everyone on high alert!" Katsuo commanded as he sent two ethereal swords to each of our sides, with four hovering to his sides. And like guardians protecting their masters, the swords hovered, ready to strike.

The trees parted forcefully, revealing an enormous beast standing on over 20 feet tall at the shoulder and spanning 40 feet in length. Its presence dominated the corrupted landscape.

It had a grotesque, chimeric appearance, with a body covered in thick, twisted bark-like scales interwoven with pulsating, bioluminescent vines and fungi. It possessed three heads, each representing different aspects: a venomous serpent head on its left, a draconic head in the center, and an insectoid head on the right.

Its three heads made the beast a formidable sight. Each head had its own set of unique, menacing traits.

The serpent's head hissed and spat venom, its eyes glowing with a toxic green light.

The draconic head at the center roared, exhaling bursts of searing fire, its eyes blazing with primal fury.

The insectoid head clicked and chittered, its mandibles snapping hungrily, and its multifaceted eyes reflecting a cold, predatory intelligence.

Katsuo, our unanimous leader, didn't waste a moment. "Valerie, prepare your strongest spells. John, find its weak point. Damysus, Hank, try to keep up, and if it's too much, don't hesitate to fall back."

He then zipped to its side, landing a devastating Judgment Cut to its bark-like scales, which made the creature stumble.

"Understood," I replied, already channeling my mana into a powerful spell. The air around me crackled with energy as I prepared to unleash it.

John's eyes scanned the beast, his analytical mind searching for any sign of vulnerability. "There's a weak spot near the base of its central head. Aim for that area!" he called out.

Damysus and Hank took up defensive positions, ready to intercept any attacks that might come our way. Their combined strength and resilience were crucial in holding the line.

Katsuo moved with blinding speed, his attacks relentless. Each strike of Sanchomo was precise, targeting the beast's weak points with deadly accuracy. The ethereal swords he summoned danced around him, slicing through the creature's defenses.

I released my spell, a powerful surge of arcane energy that struck the beast's central head. The creature roared in pain, its three heads thrashing wildly.

"Keep up the pressure!" Katsuo shouted, his voice carrying over the chaos of battle.

John deployed his traps, explosions rocking the ground beneath the beast. Damysus and Hank moved in, their combined efforts creating openings for Katsuo to exploit. Every hit they landed weakened the creature further.

The beast, now visibly weakened, let out a guttural roar. Then its serpent head spewed out a green fog-like gas, slowly encasing us. Sensing its next move, Katsuo shouted, "Everyone get back!"

Feeling the imminent danger, I summoned the last of my mana to cast a shield large enough to accommodate the five of us. Katsuo, upon seeing the barrier slowly forming, grabbed Hank and Damysus and headed towards John and me.

As he arrived, he quickly infused his mana into our shield, which now crackled with quadra-elemental properties. He also erected several pillars around us for additional protection. The last thing we saw was the draconic head unleashing a torrent of fire, causing a massive explosion.

The ground trembled beneath us as the shockwave hit. Our shield flickered but held strong, the quadra-elemental properties absorbing the brunt of the impact. The heat was intense, and the sound of the explosion was deafening, but inside the barrier, we were safe.

When the flames subsided, and the smoke began to clear, we cautiously lowered the shield. The surrounding area was scorched, trees reduced to smoldering stumps, and the beast lay in a heap, finally defeated.

"Is everyone okay?" Katsuo asked, his voice steady but laced with concern.

We nodded, each of us taking a moment to catch our breath. The shield had protected us, but we all felt the strain of the battle.

"Good thinking with the shield, Valerie," John said, patting my shoulder. "We would've been toast without it."

"And you, Katsuo," Hank added, "you really pulled us through."

Katsuo gave a small, tired smile. "It's what a team does. We look out for each other. Now, let's regroup and figure out our next steps."

I could then feel him sending out mana waves around us, something he called a radar of sorts.

"All clear," Katsuo confirmed. "We should find another place to rest because, as you can see, that suicidal asshole just burnt through our home." His voice was laced with a mix of humor and firmness, trying to lighten the mood despite the exhaustion.

We all chuckled, the tension easing a bit. Katsuo's ability to balance seriousness with humor was one of the reasons we trusted him so much.

"Alright, let's move out," Damysus said, hefting his weapon over his shoulder. "We need to find shelter before anything else decides to attack."

We began to make our way through the charred remains of the forest. Katsuo led the way, his radar ability ensuring we avoided any more surprises. The once vibrant and hostile forest now felt eerily quiet, the aftermath of the battle leaving a somber atmosphere.

After walking for about half an hour, we found a small cave nestled against a rocky hillside. It was well-hidden and offered the protection we needed.

"This should do," John said, inspecting the entrance. "I'll set up some traps just in case."

We settled inside, the coolness of the cave a welcome relief from the heat outside. Katsuo used his Earth Manipulation to fortify the entrance and create makeshift beds for us.

"Rest up," Katsuo said, looking at each of us. "We'll need all our strength for whatever comes next."

As we lay down, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Despite the constant danger and exhaustion, we had each other's backs. And with Katsuo leading us, I knew we had a fighting chance against whatever this corrupted world threw our way.

As we settled into the cave, I found myself reflecting on the past few hours. Katsuo's quick thinking and leadership had saved us, but it was our teamwork that had truly made the difference. Despite the odds, we had fought together and emerged victorious.

I glanced at Katsuo, who was sitting at the entrance, keeping watch. His eyes were focused, but I could see the weariness in them. Even he had limits, but he never showed it. He was our pillar, our unwavering strength.

"Hey, Katsuo," I said softly, walking over to him. "You should get some rest too. You've done more than enough."

He looked up at me and smiled. "I'll rest soon. Just want to make sure we're safe first."

I nodded, knowing better than to argue. "Thank you, for everything."

He shrugged, a modest gesture. "It's what a team does. We look out for each other."

With that, I returned to my makeshift bed, feeling a sense of peace despite the chaos outside.

(Katsuo POV)

As I reflected on our recent fight with that chimeric abomination, certain details stood out. Despite its enormous size and multiple heads, its eyes displayed a certain intelligence. Yet, its movements were flimsy at best, reminiscent of a baby learning to walk. It wasn't a hard fight once we pinpointed its weak spot, but the way it didn't hesitate to sacrifice itself sent shivers down my spine.

The thought lingered with me. What kind of force would drive a creature to such desperate measures? It made me wary of what lay ahead.

On a more positive note, my efforts in training were paying off. I was now at Adept Core - II, a significant leap in my abilities. The intense sessions in the simulator, combined with real combat experience, had honed my skills to new heights.

As I sat at the entrance of the cave, keeping watch, I activated my thermoreception again. The surrounding area was quiet, with no immediate threats in sight. The team was resting, their breathing even and steady. We had survived another day in this harsh world, and for that, I was grateful.

A rustle behind me caught my attention. I turned to see Valerie approaching. She looked tired but determined.

"Hey, Katsuo," she said softly, sitting beside me. "You should get some rest too. You've done more than enough."

I smiled at her concern. "I'll rest soon. Just want to make sure we're safe first."

She nodded, understanding but still worried. "Thank you, for everything."

"It's what a team does," I replied, my voice steady. "We look out for each other."

Valerie returned to her makeshift bed, and I resumed my watch. The night was peaceful, a stark contrast to the battles we had fought earlier. But I knew this tranquility was temporary. We would need all our strength for whatever came next.

The moonlight cast long shadows across the cave entrance, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me.

As the night wore on, my thoughts drifted back to my home, to Tom waiting for me, to Lisa's expectations, and to the bond I was forming with Hank and the others. They were more than just teammates; they were my friends, my family in this treacherous life.

With a deep breath, I allowed myself to relax. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, but tonight, we were safe. And that was enough.

Jolting me awake was a soft pat on my shoulder. "Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," John said, scratching the back of his head.

"It's okay, just a bit startled," I sighed. "Did you guys eat?"

"Not yet. We were waiting for you to wake up," Hank said.

"Ah, sorry about that," I replied sheepishly.

"It's okay, man. You've been pushing yourself too hard," Hank added, a note of worry in his voice. "When you were the one supposedly tasked with 'supporting' us," he teased lightly.

"Well, can't let you guys die, you know? It'll ruin my reputation," I said with a grin, while ordering a standard meal from my interface. The holographic display flickered to life, and within moments, our rations materialized.

We settled down to eat, the atmosphere lightening as we shared stories and jokes. Despite the dire circumstances, moments like these reminded us of our humanity and the bond we shared.

"So, what's the plan for today?" Valerie asked between bites.

"First, we need to move out of this cave. It's too exposed," I said. "We'll find a more secure location and then assess the situation."

Everyone nodded in agreement. After finishing our meal, we packed up our gear and prepared to move. My mind raced with strategies and potential threats, but I kept my demeanor calm to reassure the team.

As we ventured deeper into the forest, I couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. My thermoreception picked up faint, distant heat signatures, but nothing immediate. Still, it kept me on edge.

"Stay close and keep your guard up," I instructed. The team tightened their formation, each of them alert and ready.

Hours passed as we trekked through the dense underbrush. Eventually, we came upon a more secluded area, surrounded by natural barriers. It seemed like the perfect spot to set up a temporary base.

Using my Earth manipulation, I quickly created a fortified shelter, ensuring it blended seamlessly with the surroundings. The team visibly relaxed, grateful for a moment of respite.

"You guys rest here for a while," I said. "Conserve your energy. I'll go scout ahead first." Then I zipped off, not wanting to hear any protests.

(Third-person POV)

"Should we catch up?" John asked worriedly.

"No, he's faster than us," Damysus said firmly. "We'll only be a hindrance if we continue to move in our current conditions."

"Chosen's are really built different, huh," John said, trying to ease the mood.

"I don't think so. It's Katsuo who's just different," Valerie chimed in. "You guys do realize that between the five of us, he's had the least rest, right?"

"Maybe it's because he's a half-devil?" Hank suggested.

"No, even my father would get tired fighting tirelessly for two days," Damysus, the half-giant, replied.

"A-rank missions are really different, huh," Hank said tiredly. Then a sudden thought emerged in his head. "So, does this count as us defeating a dragon? I mean, that chimera had a dragon head."

The group shared a weary laugh, their spirits lifting slightly.
