Nyx winced as he shifted his weight - the pain from his wounds pulsating, forcing him to grit his teeth so as not to make a sound.
He shot a glance towards Acher — his fist gripping his glaive as his eyes scanned the desolate field below.
Nyx gave a judgemental gaze towards him. "What's the plan, hero?"
Acher's eyes clenched as he peered back towards him. "We kill the wolves."
Nyx let out a quick sigh, "We can't just run in without a plan."
Acher let out a tick. "We don't have time for a plan. We need to save them."
The two of them locked eyes for an uncomforting amount of time until Acher begrudgingly turned back towards the field.
"-What do you have in mind?" He murmured.
Nyx gave a slight smirk. "The first thing we need to do is regroup. While Thane and Ryland are holding off the wolves, we group the cadets back together."
"-then we notify the Phantoms to help." Acher chipped in, nearly ready to emerge from behind the rock and charge into battle.
"We won't need to," Nyx muttered in response.
From the corner of his eye, Nyx could see Acher give a slight glance of confusion. Swiftly did Nyx shake his head, gripping his arm and slowly beginning to stand. "Nothing. It's just a hunch."
"Look- we can't sit here and contemplate. We need to move."
It was then did a harrowing scream sound out to the north, sending a slight shiver down Nyx's spine. "Then let's move. Towards the screams."
Nyx's gaze shifted straight towards the fields behind the rock, trying to gain any information he could.
To his surprise, there was very little to note — dust and debris filling the air and blocking his vision. The only semblance of a struggle was the occasional scent of dried and burning blood, along with the distant yet fading sounds of combat.
Nyx passed a glance towards Acher, steadily nodding his head as they began to creep around to the other side of the rock.
With the entire field in their vision, it was still more of the same.
Absolutely nothing.
Acher stood in the front — hesitantly waving his glaive out before him to fan the dust away as they walked.
Behind the scorching heat and resounding pain Nyx could feel throughout his body was an immense sense of fear.
Despite everything, however, he still gripped his tattered spear firmly within his hands, eyes slowly sweeping across the field in somber expectation.
He could feel his own senses heighten — taking in every slight sound he heard. His mind raced faster than he even knew possible.
It was then did he hear it; the sound of clamoring paws creeping closer.
One step. Two steps. Three, four, five- by the time Nyx turned around, he feared it would've been too late.
And yet, for once, he managed to outpace the wolf.
He leaped his body forward and thrusted the iron head through the clouds of dust — all before it could even make its presence known.
With the sudden squelch and pressure from the impact, along with the fear-inducing yelp from the Terror, Nyx used what strength he had to ingress the head further in.
It violently began to ravage and shake, and with a sudden tug, rolled Nyx straight to the ground — his chin bashing against the soil making his teeth click together.
Acher rushed forward, pulling back the glaive before hurling it forward, once again a sickening sound being produced.
By now, the dust had already begun to disperse, fading away and revealing the wolf in all its glory.
Following Acher's glaive, it was clear to see it pierced straight through into the beast's eye, whilst Nyx's remains of a spear perforated into its lower chest.
Hasty did Nyx rise from the ground, peering towards the beast and getting ready to strike.
In the moment, he failed to notice what Acher already had.
"Nyx- stop!" Acher shouted, ripping Nyx away from the beast, leaving the spear locked into the beast.
Nyx clenched his eyes, "What are you doing-!"
By the time he finished speaking, he could already see it. From behind the fog, and masked by the adrenaline of fighting, he had failed to see the obvious.
Dual silver blades sticking out of the Terror's back, and two cadets glaring from behind.
It just so happened that they were the two everyone knew to heart. The two already with the skill of a Phantom.
Rei and Seren.
