Chapter 38 - Predatory eyes!

Isabel and Princess Thalassa cautiously made their way deeper into the desolate landscape of Dragon's Keep, unbeknownst to them, their presence had stirred ancient beings from their slumber. Two pairs of predatory eyes opened—one after another.

Inside the depths of the volcano, hidden amidst the molten rivers of lava and the fiery heart of the mountain, the Fire Dragon stirred. Its scales gleamed with hues of crimson and gold, reflecting the intense heat that radiated from its colossal form. Eyes as bright as burning embers scanned the surroundings, sensing the intrusion of unfamiliar energies.

Simultaneously, in the boiling hot streams that wound through the rocky terrain below, the Stream Dragon languidly shifted its massive, serpentine body.

Its scales shimmered with iridescent blues and greens, mirroring the colors of the steaming water around it. This dragon was older, its wisdom etched in the deep ridges of its scaled face, and its gaze was sharp despite the languid appearance.

As the dragons sensed the presence of Isabel and Thalassa, they exchanged silent communication through their ancient bond.

The Fire Dragon, sensing the opportunity, emerged first from the volcano's depths. With powerful beats of its wings, it ascended from the molten caverns, its majestic form silhouetted against the fiery glow within.

Not far behind, the Stream Dragon emerged from the bubbling hot springs with a sinuous grace, its movements fluid and precise. As it rose into the air, droplets of steaming water cascaded from its scales, evaporating into wisps of mist around its massive body.

The two dragons ascended towards the peak of Dragon's Keep, where the rocky outcroppings provided a vantage point over the entire landscape.

With synchronized grace, they landed side by side, their presence commanding and formidable. The Fire Dragon's gaze fixated on Isabel, sensing the gentleness that surrounded her. Meanwhile, the Stream Dragon turned its attention to Thalassa, its eyes sharp with ancient wisdom.

As they settled, the Stream Dragon inclined its head slightly towards the Fire Dragon in a gesture of respect, acknowledging the superior blood line of younger dragon. The Fire Dragon, in turn, nodded in acknowledgment, a silent exchange passing between them.

Stream Dragon : These mortals bring with them an unfamiliar presence. What do you sense, Pyraxor?

Fire Dragon: Power, but also uncertainty. They tread boldly where others fear to venture. Perhaps they seek the treasures of our keep.

The Fire Dragon unfolded its wings, the movement causing a rush of wind that stirred the air around Isabel and Thalassa.

Down below, Isabel paused, sensing a sudden shift in the atmosphere. She looked up, squinting against the glare of the sun, and felt a chill run down her spine but she couldn't point out the source.

Meanwhile, Thalassa, driven by her frustration and determination to find a way out of this desolate place, barely noticed the dragons' presence at first. She muttered curses under her breath, her gaze fixed on Isabel ahead of her.

Stream Dragon: "They are not the first to come here, and they will not be the last. You must be careful, Pyraxor. Not all mortals are good; some are the incarnations of demons."

Fire Dragon: "I understand, Uncle Lyranth. I will not disappoint you. If she is not worthy, she will have to go back, just like the previous ones."

Isabel and Thalassa, oblivious to the conversation happening above them, continued their journey towards the peaks. The oppressive heat and the rugged terrain had slowed their progress, but neither was willing to turn back.

Pyraxor and Lyranth watched the mortals closely, their expressions inscrutable. The Fire Dragon's eyes blazed with an inner fire, while the Stream Dragon's gaze was deep and calm, like a still pond.

Pyraxor: "We shall observe them closely. If they are true in their intentions and worthy of our bond, they will find their way here. But if they falter or show their true nature as unworthy, they shall be sent back."

Lyranth: "Remember, Pyraxor, our duty is to protect the sanctity of this place. We have seen too many who sought only to plunder and corrupt. Let us hope these two are different."

With a final nod, the dragons shifted their gaze back to Isabel and Thalassa.

While Isabel and Thalassa navigated the harsh landscape of Dragon's Keep, Mirael found herself in a vastly different environment. As the teleportation spell released her, she landed softly amidst lush, verdant foliage. The air was warm and humid, filled with the heady scent of blooming flowers and the distant calls of exotic birds.

Mirael took another deep breath, savoring the sweet, fragrant air. She looked around, marveling at the dense canopy of trees above her, their leaves forming a thick, green roof that filtered the sunlight into soft, golden beams. Vines hung lazily from branches, adorned with vibrant flowers of every color imaginable. It felt like she had been transported to a tropical paradise.

"How beautiful this place is," Mirael thought to herself, "but alas, I never did like these too-evergreen forests. Danger could be lurking anywhere, hidden beneath this lush beauty." She glanced down, noticing how the muddy soil clung to her boots, making each step feel uncertain. "I could find myself sinking at any moment," she muttered, frustration tinging her voice.

Her thoughts drifted to Isabel. "If only Isabel were here," she murmured. "She loves nature, would probably be in heaven right now. She'd know exactly what to do in a place like this."

Mirael couldn't help but smile at the thought of her friend's excitement and expertise. Isabel's knowledge of plants and animals would have been invaluable here.

Mirael continued mumbling as she walked towards the river, her mind a mix of appreciation and caution. "What I wouldn't give for a guide through this maze," she sighed, pushing aside a low-hanging vine. She paused momentarily to wipe the sweat from her brow, the humidity already taking its toll.

"Focus, Mirael," she told herself firmly. "This place may be beautiful, but it's not home. I need to stay alert."
