Chereads / BLOOD IN THE STARS / Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

Chapter 3 - CHAPTER THREE

Kael's shuttle glided smoothly into the docking bay of Satau Outpost, the familiar hum of the engines fading as the vessel settled into place. He disembarked with the same cold, calculated steps that had carried him through countless missions. His black armour, still stained with the blood of his victims, drew curious glances from the outpost's inhabitants. However, no one dared to approach him.

The corridors of the outpost buzzed with activity. Merchants haggled over exotic wares, mercenaries exchanged war stories, and officials moved with the brisk efficiency of those accustomed to managing chaos. Kael's presence was a stark contrast to the organized chaos around him—a silent predator moving among prey.

Kael made his way to the Mercenary Guild, his expression unreadable. As he stepped through the heavy doors, he was greeted by Alara, the striking woman who had welcomed him earlier. Her usual professional demeanor faltered for a brief moment, her eyes flickering with an emotion Kael couldn't quite place.

"Welcome back, Kael," Alara said, her voice smooth and melodic. "I see your mission was a success."

Kael nodded, his cold eyes watching her closely. "It was. The stolen weapons have been recovered, and the fanatics have been dealt with."

Alara's smile widened, but Kael noticed a fleeting change in her expression. For a split second, her eyes seemed to flash with anger. It was so brief that anyone else might have missed it, but Kael's sharp instincts caught it. He filed the observation away for later consideration, curious about the cause of her reaction.

"That is an interesting mission you picked," Alara remarked, her tone light and professional again. "The mission you completed was a high priority. It had been sitting unclaimed for some time because of the risks involved with the Celestial Light."

Kael's curiosity was piqued further. "Why is that?"

Alara's smile became more guarded. "The Celestial Light is... notoriously difficult to deal with. Their fanaticism and well-armed guards make them a formidable challenge. Many mercenaries shy away from such assignments."

Kael's smile was cold and predatory. "Not me."

Alara nodded, her expression unreadable. "Indeed. Your performance has not gone unnoticed. Black Talon Security was particularly impressed and has provided a substantial bonus for the successful recovery of the ship and the weapons."

She handed Kael a sleek data pad, the screen lighting up with his updated account balance and mission details. "In addition to the standard payout, you have received an additional reward for the ship and the prototype weapons, including the armour and weapons from the guards you eliminated. It all amounts to 1,500,000 credits."

The amount caught the attention of those within earshot, and several exclamations of surprise and envy filled the air. Kael remained impassive, but he noticed one of the alien mercenaries nearby—a tall, reptilian creature with scarred scales—exchanging a worried glance with a companion.

The reptilian mercenary, clearly uncomfortable, approached Kael. "I heard you took down the Celestial Light. Impressive... but dangerous. They don't take kindly to those who cross them, especially mercenaries. You might want to watch your back."

Kael's interest was piqued. "Is that so?"

The mercenary nodded, his eyes flicking around nervously. "Yeah. They're relentless. It's only a matter of time before they come after you. I've seen it happen before."

Kael's smile widened a cold, calculating light in his eyes. "Let them try. This wouldn't be the first cult I've dealt with."

The mercenary gave a reluctant nod before retreating to his group, clearly disturbed by the conversation. Kael turned back to Alara, who had been watching the exchange with an inscrutable expression.

"I appreciate the warning," Kael said, his tone neutral. "And the bonus."

Alara nodded, her professionalism intact. "You've earned it. Stay safe, Kael. The galaxy is a dangerous place."

Kael's mind was already racing with possibilities. The mere fanatical group was more intense than he initially thought. This could make things interesting.

After leaving the guild, Kael decided it was time to secure a place to rest and plan his next move. He rented a room in one of the most secure accommodations on Satau Outpost, a place known to be used by people of importance and notorious for its unparalleled security.

The exterior of the building was imposing, with high walls and fortified gates. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, their expressions stern and alert. Kael approached the entrance, his presence alone enough to part the crowds.

Inside, the lobby was a stark contrast to the rugged exterior—opulent, with luxurious furnishings and advanced technology seamlessly integrated into the decor. Kael approached the reception desk, where a smartly dressed attendant greeted him with a respectful nod.

"Welcome, sir. How may I assist you?"

"I need a room for the week," Kael replied, his tone businesslike.

"Of course. Our rates start at 25,000 credits per week for our standard secure accommodations. Will that suffice?"

"That will do."

The attendant processed the transaction swiftly, handing Kael a key card and a detailed map of the facility. "Your room is on the top floor. It's fully customizable to accommodate any species and comes equipped with the latest in security technology. If you need anything, our staff is at your service."

Kael took the key card and made his way to the elevator. The ride to the top floor was smooth, the elevator gliding silently upward. When the doors opened, he stepped into a corridor lined with doors, each one marked with the insignia of the facility.

He found his room and scanned the key card, the door sliding open with a soft hiss. The interior was spacious and elegant, designed to be adjustable for any alien species. The walls were reinforced, and the windows were made of a transparent alloy stronger than any conventional material.

Kael walked through the room, noting the advanced security systems discreetly integrated into the design. His analytic ability kicked in, processing the information rapidly. The entire room was fortified to an extreme degree, akin to a nuclear bunker but far more advanced. It was designed to withstand significant force and provide a haven for its occupants.

"Impressive," Kael muttered to himself, a rare note of approval in his voice.

He settled into the room, appreciating the luxury and security it provided. For 25,000 credits a week, he had found a sanctuary that met his exacting standards. The room was equipped with everything he needed to plan his next moves and rest between missions.

The Celestial Light was a more formidable enemy than he had initially thought. Their fanaticism and reach could pose a significant threat. But Kael thrived on challenges, and the prospect of dealing with such a relentless adversary only fueled his ambition.

As he sat in the plush chair, Kael allowed himself a moment of reflection. The galaxy was vast, and the opportunities for someone of his skills were limitless. He had made a mark with his recent mission, and the reputation he was building would open even more doors.

His thoughts were interrupted by a soft chime from his data pad. A new message had arrived, marked as high priority. Kael opened it, his eyes narrowing as he saw that it was an audio file from an anonymous client using the codename "Obsidian Shadow." The fact that it had bypassed the Mercenary Guild and landed directly in his private messages was highly unusual. His rank was not high enough to attract such direct attention, making him immediately suspicious.

Kael activated the audio file, and a smooth, modulated voice filled the room:

"Greetings, Kael Draven. I am known as Obsidian Shadow. I have a high-priority assignment that maybe to your liking. The target is Valar Askeran, a prominent member of the Satau Council. Valar has been implicated in numerous scandals involving corruption and illicit dealings with various criminal organizations. The Council's hands are tied due to his political influence, but certain...interested parties wish to see him removed from power permanently. The reward for this mission is 2,000,000 credits, with an additional bonus if the assassination can be carried out without drawing attention to the client's involvement. I trust you will find this offer intriguing. Further details will follow upon your acceptance. Time is of the essence."

The voice note ended, leaving Kael in silence. His mind immediately went to work, analyzing the situation. This was no ordinary assignment.

Kael's instincts told him to tread carefully. Obsidian Shadow had presented an opportunity, but it was wrapped in layers of potential deceit. To better understand the risks and the target, Kael decided to investigate Valar Askeran himself. Given the lax state of cybersecurity on Satau Outpost, obtaining the necessary information would be straightforward.

Kael moved to the small desk in the corner of the room and activated his portable terminal. The screen lit up, and he began typing rapidly, his fingers dancing across the keys. He initiated a series of cyber intrusions, bypassing firewalls and security protocols with ease. Within moments, he had access to the outpost's main data network.

Valar Askeran's profile appeared on the screen, accompanied by a wealth of information. Kael's analytical ability kicked in, processing the data rapidly. Valar was a seasoned politician with a long history of backroom deals and shady alliances. His rise to power had been marked by ruthless tactics and a willingness to eliminate anyone who stood in his way.

Kael delved deeper, uncovering Valar's connections to various criminal organizations. The man was deeply entrenched in a web of corruption that spanned multiple sectors. Kael's eyes narrowed as he read through the details, noting the various factions and individuals who might benefit from Valar's removal.

The information painted a picture of a man who was both powerful and vulnerable. Valar's influence was significant, but his numerous enemies made him a prime target for assassination. Kael's suspicion grew as he uncovered more about the political landscape. This mission was not just about removing a corrupt politician; it was a move in a much larger game of power and control.

Kael leaned back in his chair, considering his options. The reward was substantial, but the risks were equally high. Obsidian Shadow's motives were unclear, and the potential fallout from the assassination could be significant. However, the challenge intrigued him. Valar Askeran was a worthy target, and the mission promised to be anything but dull.

More intel was needed to understand the full scope of the situation before making his move. His first step was to find out more about Obsidian Shadow. The codename suggested someone who operated in the shadows, but there might be clues hidden in the data he had accessed.

Kael's fingers flew over the keyboard as he initiated a deeper search. He sifted through encrypted files, communications logs, and transaction records, looking for any reference to Obsidian Shadow. The process was painstaking, but Kael's patience and skill paid off. He uncovered a series of encrypted messages that hinted at Obsidian Shadow's involvement in various high-stakes operations.

The messages were heavily redacted, but Kael managed to piece together enough information to form a rough profile. Obsidian Shadow appeared to be a facilitator, someone who arranged high-profile hits and political maneuvers from behind the scenes. The codename had surfaced in connection with several major events, including the downfall of influential figures and the sudden rise of others.

Kael's interest deepened. Obsidian Shadow was clearly a player in the galaxy's power dynamics, someone who pulled strings from the shadows. The fact that this individual had reached out to him directly was both an honor and a potential threat. Kael knew he had to be careful, but the opportunity was too enticing to pass up.

Satisfied with his initial research, Kael turned his attention back to Valar Askeran. He needed to know more about the target's daily routines, security measures, and potential vulnerabilities. The data he had accessed included detailed reports on Valar's activities, providing a comprehensive overview of the man's movements and habits.

Valar maintained a luxurious residence in one of the wealthiest sectors of the Satau Outpost. The estate was heavily guarded, with state-of-the-art security systems and a private security force loyal to Valar. The reports also indicated that Valar was highly paranoid, rarely leaving his residence and conducting most of his business through intermediaries.

The security measures would be a challenge, but not insurmountable. Valar's paranoia, while a potential obstacle, could also be a weakness. Kael's experience had taught him that even the most guarded individuals could be manipulated and exploited.

To gather more specific intel, Kael decided to tap into the surveillance network around Valar's residence. He initiated another series of cyber intrusions, this time targeting the security feeds and communication channels linked to the estate. The process took longer than expected, but Kael's persistence paid off.

The live feeds from Valar's residence appeared on the screen, providing Kael with real-time access to the target's movements. He watched as Valar moved through his luxurious home, flanked by bodyguards and surrounded by the trappings of wealth and power. Kael's analytical ability kicked into high gear, noting the patterns and routines that could be exploited.

Valar's paranoia was evident in every aspect of his life. The security force was well-trained, and the estate was equipped with multiple layers of defense. However, Kael noticed a few potential vulnerabilities. The guards, while vigilant, followed predictable patrol routes. The security systems, though advanced, had a few blind spots that could be exploited.

Kael leaned back, a cold smile playing on his lips. The mission was shaping up to be a worthy challenge. With the intel he had gathered, he could formulate a plan to infiltrate the estate and eliminate Valar without raising suspicion.

His thoughts were interrupted by another chime from his data pad. Another message from Obsidian Shadow had arrived, this time containing more detailed instructions and a proposed timeline for the assassination.

"Kael Draven," the modulated voice began, "I trust you have conducted your initial investigation. The details of the mission are as follows: Valar Askeran must be eliminated within the next 72 hours. The timing is critical, as his removal will coincide with a significant political shift that our clients wish to leverage. The bonus will be awarded if the assassination is executed without drawing attention to our involvement. Discretion is paramount. Good luck."

Kael's eyes gleamed with anticipation. The stakes were high, but the potential rewards were even higher. He had 72 hours to eliminate Valar Askeran and ensure that the mission was carried out with the utmost discretion.

Kael began to map out the estate's layout, identified the security blind spots, and formulated a strategy to neutralize the guards without raising an alarm. His analytical ability provided him with a clear path forward, each step calculated to maximize efficiency and minimize risk.

Kael prepared his gear, he just got out of one mission and had not yet, made the needed adjustments, but the armour would do the job, a quick clean, to remove blood stains.

Before proceeding, Kael decided to dig deeper into the origins of this mission. Obsidian Shadow's involvement was too convenient, and Kael's instincts told him there was more to this than met the eye. He initiated another series of cyber intrusions, this time focusing on uncovering any connections between Obsidian Shadow, Valar Askeran, and the supposed clients.

Hours passed as Kael delved into encrypted files and communication logs. His persistence paid off when he uncovered a series of coded messages linking Obsidian Shadow and Valar Askeran to the Celestial Light. The messages revealed that Valar had been a prominent member of the cult but had recently gone rogue, causing a rift within the organization.

Kael's eyes narrowed as he pieced together the information. It became clear that Obsidian Shadow so-called clients were all part of the Celestial Light. The mission to eliminate Valar was a way to remove a rogue element from their ranks and pin the assassination on Kael, using him as a pawn in their internal power struggle.

Kael's smile was cold and predatory. The realization that he was being manipulated only fueled his determination. He would carry out the mission, but on his terms. The Celestial Light thought they could use him, but Kael Draven was no one's pawn, not is this life.

----------------

The next 48 hours were spent in meticulous preparation. Kael knew that the mission to eliminate Valar Askeran required not only precision and skill but also a plan to counter any attempts by Obsidian Shadow and his clients to pin the murder on him. His analytical mind worked overtime, strategizing every move and anticipating every possible scenario.

Kael first secured an untraceable safehouse near the estate, a place where he could retreat if things went awry. He also set up a series of false trails and digital breadcrumbs to mislead anyone investigating the assassination. These measures would ensure that any blame for the murder would circle back to the Celestial Light, further destabilizing the cult and sowing chaos within their ranks.

His equipment was carefully selected and prepared. Kael's armor was sound-dampened and optimized for stealth, blending seamlessly with the shadows. His weapons were chosen for their silence and lethality, including a silenced pistol and a combat knife with a serrated edge. His data pad was loaded with hacking tools and programs designed to disable security systems and cameras.

Kael also placed several contingencies in motion. He set up remote access to various data networks, allowing him to manipulate information and create diversions if necessary. He even planted false evidence in strategic locations, ensuring that if anyone tried to trace the assassination back to him, they would be led on a wild goose chase.

With everything in place, the plan was foolproof, and he was ready to execute it.

As night fell, Kael moved silently through the shadows, approaching Valar Askeran's estate. The property was heavily guarded, with high walls, surveillance cameras, and patrolling guards. The security measures were impressive, but Kael had anticipated them all.

Kael activated his sound-dampened armor, blending seamlessly with the darkness. His analytical ability kicked in, processing the information from his data pad and the live feeds he had hacked into. The cameras and motion detectors were disabled at precisely the right moments, creating gaps in the security coverage that Kael exploited with ease.

He scaled the outer wall, moving with the grace of a predator. The guards were vigilant, but their patrol routes were predictable. Kael slipped past them, his movements silent and precise. The estate's grounds were extensive, with manicured gardens and luxurious fountains, but Kael paid them no mind. His focus was on the mission.

Reaching the main building, Kael used a small device to hack the electronic lock on a side door. The lock disengaged with a soft click, and Kael slipped inside. The interior of the estate was opulent, with marble floors, expensive artwork, and ornate furnishings. Kael's eyes scanned the area, noting the positions of the security cameras and the guards.

Using his data pad, Kael hacked into the estate's security system, temporarily disabling the cameras and locking the motion detectors. He moved through the hallways like a ghost, leaving no trace of his presence. The guards were unaware of the intruder in their midst, their attention focused on their assigned routes.

Kael reached the central elevator that led down to Valar Askeran's private quarters. The elevator was guarded by two heavily armed men, their expressions stern and alert. Kael observed them from the shadows, his mind calculating the best approach.

One of them was near an electrical panel, with little tap on his datapad, he caused it to overload, shocking the guard into unconciousness, the second guard non the wiser, assuming it was a form of electrical fault dragged his companion to go seek help, leaving the elevator ungaurded.

He hacked the elevator's security panel, ensuring that it would take him directly to Valar's quarters without triggering any alarms. The elevator doors slid open, and Kael stepped inside. As the elevator descended, Kael reviewed his plan one last time. The element of surprise was on his side, and he intended to use it to maximum effect.

All the lights, cameras, and automated defenses were disabled, leaving the living space completely dark. Inside, Valar Askeran awoke with a start, his heart racing as he realized something was terribly wrong.

Valar stumbled from his nest-like bed, his voice cracking with panic. "Lights! Lights, damn you, turn on!"

Nothing happened. The darkness was absolute. He shouted again, his voice growing more desperate. "Defenses! Activate defenses!"

Still nothing. Valar was all alone in the dark, and he could see nothing. He fumbled for a communicator, but it was dead, the line cut. His heart pounded in his chest, a wild, erratic beat that filled him with dread.

Meanwhile, Kael moved silently through the estate, his sound-dampened armor blending seamlessly with the shadows. He had made adjustments to his helmet, enabling night vision that allowed him to see everything in stark clarity. He could see Valar clearly, panicking in the dark, and he could end him here and now. But Kael had a different idea.

He had noted in his research that the Nkuku race, the bird-like humanoid aliens, had a biological flaw. Their hearts were vulnerable; if their heart rate exceeded 150 beats per minute for just three minutes, they would go into cardiac arrest. This was Kael's angle, and he intended to exploit it to its fullest.

The Terror Begins

Kael watched Valar from the shadows, his presence undetectable. Valar's breathing was ragged, his heart pounding with fear. Kael knew he had to keep Valar's pulse elevated, pushing him closer to the brink.

With a swift motion, Kael activated a small device that emitted a low, ominous hum. The sound echoed through the darkened mansion, bouncing off the walls and creating an eerie atmosphere. Valar froze, his eyes wide with terror.

"Who's there?" Valar shouted, his voice trembling. "Show yourself!"

Kael remained silent, watching as Valar's fear grew. He moved silently through the mansion, ensuring that Valar caught glimpses of him—just enough to keep his heart racing. A flicker of movement here, a shadow there, always staying just out of sight.

Valar stumbled through the dark, his heart hammering in his chest. He reached for a weapon, but Kael had already disabled the automated defenses and disarmed the estate's security systems. Valar was defenseless, and the realization only added to his panic.

Kael triggered a series of flickering lights, casting eerie shadows across the room. Valar spun around, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "Stay away from me! I know you're there!"

Kael moved closer, his presence a haunting specter in the darkness. He activated another device, this one emitting a series of unsettling sounds—whispers, footsteps, the creak of a floorboard. Valar's heart rate spiked, his fear palpable.

Valar stumbled backwards, his back hitting the wall. "Please, stop this! What do you want?"

Kael remained silent, his cold eyes watching from the shadows. He could see Valar's heart rate rising on his data pad, each beat bringing him closer to the edge. The councilor's breaths were shallow, his movements frantic.

Kael continued to manipulate the environment, using sound and light to create a sense of impending doom. He triggered a series of loud bangs, like gunshots, echoing through the darkened halls. Valar screamed, his heart racing uncontrollably.

Desperation gripped Valar as he stumbled through his home, searching for an escape that did not exist. Kael watched his prey with a predator's patience, each calculated move designed to drive Valar's fear higher.

The lights flickered again, casting long shadows that seemed to reach out for Valar. He gasped, clutching his chest, feeling the strain on his heart. "Stop! Please, stop!"

Kael's analytical ability ensured that he maintained the perfect balance—enough terror to keep Valar's heart rate elevated, but not so much that he would pass out too quickly. He wanted Valar to feel every agonizing moment, to be consumed by his own fear.

Kael made a soft, whispering sound, a breathy, disembodied voice that seemed to come from all around Valar. "Your time is up, Valar. They are coming for you."

Valar's eyes widened in terror. "Who's there? What do you want from me?"

Kael's voice, distorted through his helmet's speakers, replied with chilling calmness. "Justice."

Valar's heart rate spiked again, nearing the critical threshold. Kael watched the data pad, timing his next moves with precision. He triggered a low-frequency sound wave, barely audible but deeply unsettling, designed to evoke a sense of dread.

Valar stumbled into a room filled with mirrors, the flickering lights casting distorted reflections that seemed to move of their own accord. He saw glimpses of Kael's dark figure in the reflections, always just out of reach, a phantom in the night.

"Show yourself!" Valar screamed, his voice cracking. "Face me!"

Kael's silhouette appeared in one of the mirrors, then vanished as quickly as it had come. Valar's pulse quickened, the fear overwhelming him. He clutched his chest, feeling the strain on his heart, the impending doom.

Kael moved closer, his steps silent, his presence a shadow that loomed over Valar. The councilor fell to his knees, gasping for breath, his heart pounding uncontrollably. "Please... no more..."

Kael's voice echoed through the darkness, a whisper that chilled Valar to the bone. "Your sins have caught up with you, Valar."

Valar's vision blurred, his pulse racing beyond control. He knew he was on the verge of a heart attack, the fear and panic too much for his fragile heart to bear. "Mercy... please..."

Kael watched as Valar's heart rate reached the critical threshold. He could see the councilor's desperate, frantic breaths, his body trembling with fear. The data pad showed the steady climb of Valar's pulse, each beat bringing him closer to cardiac arrest.

The lights flickered one last time, casting a ghastly glow over Valar's contorted face. Kael stepped into the light, revealing himself fully for the first time. Valar's eyes widened in horror as he saw the cold, emotionless mask staring back at him.

"Who... who are you?" Valar gasped, his voice barely a whisper.

Kael's voice was a low, menacing growl. "I am your end."

Valar's heart gave one final, desperate beat, then faltered. He clutched his chest, gasping for air, his eyes rolling back. With a final shuddering breath, he collapsed to the floor, dead.

Kael stood over the lifeless body, his expression unreadable behind the mask, "I still got it" he said to himself. The mission was complete, but his work was not yet done. He had to ensure that the evidence he had planted would lead back to the Celestial Light and that his involvement would remain hidden.

Kael moved quickly, erasing any traces of his presence. He wiped down the surfaces he had touched, disabled the security feeds he had hacked into, tweaking the feed in some aspects, deleting would raise more suspscions.

He exited Valar's quarters and made his way back to the elevator, his movements swift and silent. The elevator ride up was uneventful, the soft hum of the machinery a stark contrast to the chaos that would soon unfold below.

Kael slipped through the estate, avoiding the patrolling guards and surveillance cameras. His sound-dampened armour and analytical ability made the escape almost as easy as the infiltration. He scaled the outer wall and disappeared into the night, leaving no trace of his presence.

As he made his way back to the safehouse, Kael reviewed the mission in his mind. The assassination had been executed flawlessly, and the evidence he had planted would ensure that the blame fell squarely on the Celestial Light. Obsidian Shadow and his clients had tried to manipulate him, but Kael had turned their own plan against them.

Back at the safe house, Kael settled into his chair and activated his datapad. He composed a brief message to Obsidian Shadow, informing him of the task's completion.

"Task completed. Valar Askeran is dead."

A reply came almost immediately, the modulated voice cold and efficient.

"Confirmation will be carried out. Maintain radio silence until further notice."

Kael's lips curled into a slight smile. If he was right, his contingency plan would soon be activated, and Obsidian Shadow would be in for a rude awakening. With that thought, Kael powered down his data pad and allowed himself to relax. The mission had been a success, and the wheels were now in motion. He lay down on the bed, his mind at ease, and drifted off to sleep.

Kael woke early the next morning, refreshed and ready to face the day. As he made his way to the small kitchenette, he flicked on the holo-screen to catch the morning news. The broadcast was already filled with reports of Valar Askeran's death.

"Breaking news this morning: Valar Askeran, a prominent member of the Zynthar Council, has died from an apparent heart attack. The councilor's death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, and an investigation is currently ongoing."

Kael smirked as he sipped his coffee. He knew the investigation would lead nowhere near him. His datapad buzzed with multiple notifications. None of them were about the promised credits being deposited into his account. Instead, they were network codes and programs that had come into play as Obsidian and the Celestial Light began to frame him.

Kael chuckled softly. Obsidian had sent all data regarding the communication of Kael's involvement to the local outpost enforcement. What Obsidian didn't know was that Kael had rerouted his IP and data pad identification number after realizing this was a trap. This meant all the messages and the plan to assassinate the councillor were made to appear as if sent by to a high-ranking priest in the Celestial Light who was stationed at the outpost.

The news continued, showing images of Valar's residence and the law enforcement teams swarming the area. The reporter's voice was grave.

"No camera footage has surfaced to place anyone at the scene of the crime. However, sources indicate that evidence is leading investigators to suspect the involvement of the Celestial Light."

Kael leaned back, satisfied. The contingency plan had worked perfectly. The lack of camera footage meant they couldn't place him at the scene, and the rerouted messages had pointed the investigation squarely at the Celestial Light. The fallout was going to be significant.

Meanwhile, in a darkened room filled with glowing monitors and advanced surveillance equipment, Obsidian Shadow reviewed the data coming in from the Satau sector. His expression was unreadable behind his mask, but there was a palpable tension in the air.

Suddenly, a new communication channel opened, and a holographic image of a high-ranking member of the Celestial Light appeared. The man was clearly agitated, his features twisted with anger.

"Obsidian, you promised us results!" the man shouted. "Instead, you have implicated us in the assassination of Valar Askeran. The Satau Council has labelled us a terrorist organization, and we are being forced to retreat from the Satau sector. Do you realize the damage this has done to our operations?"

Obsidian's voice was cold and measured. "I told you we should just stick to Valar`s elimination, as i still needed time to investigate the merc, what he did to that base meant he was capable and i wanted to know and you refused, your own carelessness led to this outcome."

The priest's eyes narrowed, his anger barely contained. "Carelessness? You assured us that Kael Draven would be the one blamed for this. Instead, all evidence points to us! How do you explain that?"

Obsidian's fingers tapped rhythmically on the console, a rare sign of his irritation. "Kael is more resourceful than we anticipated. He must have altered the data pathways, but for him to do that and it go unnoticed by the central AI and the organizational AI is extraordinary. But the mission was still a success. Valar is dead."

"At what cost?" the priest demanded. "Our foothold in the Satau sector is gone. Years of work, undone in a single night. We cannot afford such failures."

Obsidian's voice took on a dangerous edge. "Do not presume to lecture me on failures. Your order is the one being hunted. Adapt or perish. That is the way of the galaxy."

The priest's image flickered with barely contained fury. "We trusted you, Obsidian. This is not over. You will answer for this."

The communication cut off abruptly, leaving Obsidian staring at the blank screen. He was not accustomed to such failures, and the repercussions of this botched operation were far-reaching. As he sat in contemplation, another message came through his private channel. It was from Kael.

The encrypted message was brief and to the point.

"I am not a pawn."

Obsidian's eyes narrowed as he read the message. Kael had outmaneuvered him, turning the entire situation to his advantage. It was a rare and humbling experience for the master manipulator.
