Chereads / The steward of Rearwood Hall / Chapter 33 - On top of me

Chapter 33 - On top of me

For the rest of the evening, I was locked up in the chambers and painted throughout. I needed to have ideas flow and coupled with the emotions I was feeling it fueled it. It was all I could do and after hours of toiling on the canvas, I had a finished work that needed just a little bit of touches before it could be labeled done.

I had requested lunch and dinner in the room. Only the lunch was I able to eat, the other was still there. I had no appetite.

So far I'm glad I chose this room as it gave me a view of the...

She was there.

I moved closer to the windows to see her sitting under a tree with a candle and writing.

Who knew I would catch such a sight at this time?

I had the urge to go down and also I needed the evening fresh air.

My steps hurried down the hall as I did have not the patience to be stopped by anyone for questioning, and thankfully there was no one in sight.

Making my way to the backyard of the house I found the tree and the candle illuminating the space she sat on. Her hair was the only thing visible from the back of the tree so I walked closer till I was able to see her full. She was humming a pleasing tune that enchanted the ears as she stalled to look up at the night stars and then she continued her writing, dipping the quill and then onto the paper.

Her handwriting was exquisite and precise. Her fine fingers doing the magic on the paper.

She was oblivious that anyone could be watching her.

I smiled at the thought.

She beamed when she wrote something and scratched it. What was it? It looked like she was writing some poems.

Flipping the pages she started to pen down some drawings. It was fascinating as I watched. She drew?

For a few minutes, it was just a scattered sketch and soon it turned into a little boy's face. She caressed it and her once pleased face turned so sour. I saw a tear brewing in her beautiful eyes brightened By the candlelight.

For some reason, the pain I saw In them tugged something on my chest.

She sniffed and the tears came running down.

What was wrong?

"Ahem!"

She flinched and turned about in horror. She stood up instantly using her shawl to wipe her tears which she thought I had not seen.

"What are doing here?"

Her hands were shaking just like she was and she tried to hide them behind her back.

"I came to get fresh air."

"Oh, " she breathed. "I would leave you to it."

She turned around to leave.

I wanted to draw her back but she walked past me Instantly.

On the grass, the book and the quill were left.

She forgot about them due to her state.

I picked them up.

It was a fine leather book with some kind of golden crest. The edges and buttons were made out of gold.

Where could she get this kind of book? It didn't look ordinary.

I was moved to see what she scribbled in there but out of courtesy, it was not right. It looked like like her diary.

"Mrs Williams!"

I chased after her.

But she didn't stop consistently when she entered the house. I chased her through the stairs and was able to catch up to her in our corridor and in front of her room.

She tried to close the doors but I held them.

"Won't you listen to what I have to say?"

"No. I want to be left alone, just go Mr Houston."

She pushed the door to jam it close.

"Then you give me no choice but to read your diary! Thanks for that anyway!"

The door opened immediately and she came out to snatch the book from my hands.

"Not so fast."

I raised it out of her reach.

"You make me exhaust my energy to give you YOUR belongings and even smashed the door in my face and now you want them?"

She struggled to take them.

"You don't read people's thoughts, that's not fair!"

"What were you doing when I offered to give them peacefully?"

"Just give it back!"

The lady just doesn't know how to apologize.

"No!" I retaliated.

I turned to move into my room as she jumped about to take them. Twisting the door knobs I entered but she drew my shirt back with so much energy that it made me lose my stance and unfortunately, she lost hers as well and she ended up on top of me on the floor.
