Chapter 19 - Fridays at Shady Pines

Liam had to leave because Larry was getting violent with Brenda. Apparently, she had called the police, and they had shown up and taken him into custody. Brenda was distraught, so she wanted her son to be there with her.

Liam was reluctant to leave, saying she was the one who got into the mess, but he loved her mother and knew he couldn't, in good conscience, leave her alone.

The next day, Kai attempted to contact Liam through text message, but he didn't hear back from him until Friday morning. He assured Kai that everything was okay and Larry would be held until Monday. Brenda had already signed him up for a rehab program. Kai was just worried it wouldn't go well. Apparently, Larry had left some nasty bruises on his wife.

They both had to work that night at Shady Pines, so Kai went to sleep during the day. He tossed and turned a lot and felt like his sleep quality was poor. He knew he would be drinking even more coffee than usual once he got to work. It was going to be a long weekend at work.

As soon as Kai pulled into the Shady Pines parking lot, he looked for Liam's car, but it wasn't there yet. He had about 15 minutes before he had to clock in, so he leaned his head back and closed his eyes.

He felt himself start to drift off when he heard a knock on the window. He startled awake and looked over to see Liam knocking on the window with a huge grin. Kai puffed out his cheeks and looked up at him, rolling down the window.

"Did you miss me?" Liam asked with a smirk.

"Yes," Kai sighed. "I was worried."

"Everything is fine now."

"If you say so."

Liam reached in and poked Kai's cheeks, which deflated upon the touch. It was comical. Liam thought it was adorable.

He looked around, then leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss to the blonde's lips.

"Dick," Kai chuckled. "Don't let Nancy see you do that."

"Fuck Nancy," Liam stated. "She's not here yet, anyway."

The two went inside and stood in the break room, waiting until 5:56 pm approached. HR always had a cow if anyone clocked in before that time.

"This sucks," Liam muttered as he absentmindedly scratched his arm.

Kai heard the door open. He didn't bother to turn around.

"Boys," he could hear Nancy state as she approached them.

"Nancy," Liam stated.

Nancy raised her brows as she looked at the pair. She knew they had gone to breakfast Monday morning, and she would be bugging Kai about it later in the shift.

Kai sighed and saw it was the correct time.

After they all clocked in, went to the hall, and got reports from the day shift staff, they started working. Kai watched as the day's staff left and sighed. He really hated coming back to work on Fridays.

As the CNAs assisted residents to bed, Kai heard a voice behind him.

"Hey, Kai," the voice stated. "Get a glove and follow me."

Kai turned around to see a resident. It was Susan from A15. She came down the hall in her electric wheelchair, and he hadn't noticed her approach. He looked at her and nodded subtly.

"Why?"

"Just grab a glove," Susan laughed. "I have something to show you."

Kai shrugged. He grabbed a small glove off the cart, as his hands were too small to fit in the other-sized gloves, and followed Susan down the hall. He wondered why the heck he needed a glove. It could have been anything. He wasn't mentally prepared for these shenanigans already.

When he entered her room, Susan positioned her wheelchair in front of the trash can. She pointed down into it. "Get that out. It fell."

Kai put on the glove and stared at her. "Get what out?"

She snickered. "You'll know once you get it."

Kai sighed and walked over to the trash can. He looked down, and he saw it. She wanted to mess with him. That's why she didn't tell him what he needed a glove for.

He reached in and pulled out a large, purple electric vibrator. He held it up and waved it at her.

"I knew you would like it," she grinned and put her hand up, like she was deflecting an attack.

"When the hell did you get this thing?" He asked as he tossed it into the drawer of her nightstand.

While cussing wasn't usually something he did around residents, Susan was different. She was cool. She had a degenerative disease and was only 55. She was the youngest person in the building. The nurses and CNAs all had a special relationship with her. It was casual and friendly.

"They took us to the mall for our outing this week," she explained. "I told you weeks ago I was going to buy one. I bet you thought I was joking."

Kai chuckled and shook his head. He should have known she wasn't lying. She always had the best stories to tell.

He left her room and went back down the hall. Nancy and Liam were talking to one another. Kai looked at both of them. He was pretty sure they were discussing him. In fact, he was more than pretty sure. He knew.

He stopped and looked between the two of them. She had a wicked grin on her face.

"What?"

"So, did you two get laid?" Nancy asked.

"No," Kai stated.

"I'm shocked," Nancy commented. "I would have figured Liam would have jumped your bones by now."

"Nancy," Kai began.

"What?" She shrugged. "I would."

Kai rolled his eyes. He was getting tired of the conversation already. He had three days of that shit. Three. He was confident he would end up strangling her before the weekend was over.

Liam laughed and looked at her. "Nancy. You don't want me."

"Damn straight, I don't," she shook her head. "But, Kai does. I've known him longer."

Kai was mortified. He wasn't sure if he wanted to laugh or cry. Both? He wanted to do both.

"Stop," Kai stated. "You're embarrassing."

Nancy patted his shoulder.

"Come on, Kai," Nancy said. "It's natural."

"Whatever," Kai mumbled and pointed to Jack, who was scowling in their direction. "Go put Jack to bed."

Nancy frowned and grabbed Liam by the arm. She began pushing Jack's wheelchair down the hall, with Liam following her.

"Fuckers!" Jack yelled out.

Kai watched as the two of them disappeared into the resident's room. The entire time Jack was flailing his arms and screaming.

Kai sighed with relief.

The blonde nurse opened the medication cart and found Susan's pills. He opened the package and dumped them into a medication cup. He then returned to her room.

Susan was watching television when he entered. He held the cup of pills out, and she took it from him. She looked in the cup and frowned.

"Do I have to take all of these fuckers?"

"Yes," Kai nodded. "Unless you want to die."

She laughed. "Not today."

Kai watched her as she struggled to swallow the pills. He didn't want to make her take them. They were huge, but she needed the supplements to survive.

She finally got them down. "That wasn't fun."

Kai shrugged and tossed the paper cup into the garbage. It was the same garbage he had taken the god forsaken vibrator from. He recoiled.

"You don't care," she frowned.

"Not really," he replied. "I don't prescribe the pills."

Susan turned off the television and handed Kai the remote.

"Plug in my vibrator."

"Hell no," Kai responded and tossed the remote onto the bed.

"Pleeeease?"

"No," he shook his head. "I'm not doing it."

She crossed her arms. "What's wrong with it?"

"Everythjng."

She sighed.

"Kai," she began. "Are you afraid of my vibrator?"

"No."

"Then plug it in for me," she requested. "It's not that hard."

Kai sighed and grabbed the cord. He plugged it into the outlet. He couldn't believe the things nurses had to do to make residents happy.

"Happy now?" He groaned.

"Very," she replied. "Now, you can turn it on."

"You're kidding, right?"

"No," she shook her head. "It won't bite."

"It might. It could kill me."

She looked at him and raised her brows. He was making excuses. One of her hands didn't work; otherwise, she would have done it herself.

"Okay," he stated. "Fine."

Kai flipped the switch. It began buzzing loudly. He stared at it. He was mortified that he was holding a resident's vibrator. It was pretty disgusting.

"You should try it," Susan suggested. "You can use it on your butt."

"No," Kai replied. "I'll pass."

Susan looked at him and shrugged. "Suit yourself. I offered. If you want one, you can buy it at Spencer's."

Kai did not want one.

Kai handed it to her and then left her room and went back to the hall. He noticed Liam had finished with Jack.

Liam noticed Kai was staring at him. He was curious. He loved the way Kai looked at him, even when he seemed to be zoned out at work.

"What's up?"

"I'm thinking of killing Nancy," Kai responded.

Liam laughed. "I can help."

Kai looked at him and smiled. He appreciated the support.

"Thanks," Kai said.

"What are boyfriends for?"

"Apparently, helping kill people," Kai shrugged.

"It's the least I can do," Liam nodded. "She's a bigger bitch than you are."

"I think you should get rid of the body," Kai stated.

"Fine by me."

Kai looked down the hall. It seemed everything was running smoothly. It was quiet. He was glad. At least it was until Nancy quickly ran down the hall, yelling out "Code Brown."

Kai sighed. Liam followed Nancy to help with the so-called code brown. He had a lot of pills to pass, so unless it was something urgent, he was just going to do that.

Everything was going smoothly until he saw Brian, the weekend supervisor, prancing down the hall. He hated Brian. That was the last person he wanted to see.
