The two returned to the nurse's station once they were finished in Jack's room. Kai sat down in his chair and began to login to the charting system.
"Let's go have a smoke," Liam stated.
"I have stuff to do," Kai replied.
"Like what?"
"I have a lot to do," Kai said again, trying to think of anything that would get him away from the man who waa relentlessly bugging him. "Like charting Jack's bowel movement."
"Hey," Nancy glanced at Liam. "You just took a break."
"We weren't gone long," Liam stated as he shrugged.
"It was ten minutes," the red-head stated. "Now, go help Bob in room A4."
"Yes, madam," Liam stated with a groan. "I would be more than happy to do all the work tonight."
Kai wondered why Nancy had left the call light on, but it was usual Nancy behavior. She always complained about having bad knees and bunions.
"I'll be back," Liam stated, leaving the nurse's station.
As soon as the nursing assistant was out of sight, Kai let out a deep sigh.
The blonde leaned back in his chair and logged into the computer system. He clicked into the charting software and brought up Jack's chart.
Kai wrote a progress note regarding Jack's bowel movements and noted the date and time. He added the names of the nursing assistant and himself and clicked the blue submit button.
Kai was a stickler for details and made sure that he did his best to chart accurately and completely. He had learned to chart everything in nursing school. He made sure to cover his ass.
"Hey," Nancy said. "What did the doctor say about the medication switch?"
Kai raised a brow, a bit confused. "They changed the prescription to Zoloft instead."
"What about combativeness?" She asked curiously.
"As needed, lorazepam."
"Alright," the assistant replied. "Thanks."
"No problem," Kai responded with slight confusion.
He felt awkward around Nancy, though the two had known each other for years. Though he didn't know why she needed to know about the change in medications.
She had been bugging him about it for days, even though she was just a nursing assistant and had no use for such information.
Kai sighed as he looked at the clock. It was almost 2:30. He felt exhausted and just wanted to go home and sleep. He loved sleeping. Sleep was probably his favorite activity.
He leaned back in his chair and stared at the computer screen, watching the clock.
"Time sure drags," Liam said as he walked up to the nurse's station.
Kai raised his brow and glanced at the CNA. He watched as he pointed in the nurse's direction with his index finger.
"Are you talking to me?" Kai asked.
"Yeah, I'm talking to you," the man grinned and gave him a thumbs up.
Kai scoffed and looked up at him. His green eyes focused on Liam's.
"So," Liam started. "Do you want to grab breakfast with me after work?
Kai's eyes widened, and his cheeks flushed red. That was the last question he had expected to hear, so it caught him off guard.
"U-uh, w-w-well..." Kai stammered as he thought about how he should respond, as it seemed like a trap.
"Come on!" Liam encouraged Kai as he smirked. "It'll be fun."
"Fine," Kai replied, still blushing a deep red.
He couldn't believe he had actually agreed to go out to breakfast with him. For some reason, he felt flustered at the prospect of spending time with him outside of working hours.
Nancy stared at the two, soaking in the encounter. She kept a mental log of all the things that happened inside the building. He was sure she would end up running her mouth about it, but eating breakfast with a coworker was a rather innocent occurrence.
Kai was unsure how he felt about Liam. Sure, he was good-looking, but the way he teased him really rubbed him the wrong way. He hoped he could tolerate him enough to get through the meal without snapping.
Kai's anxiety rose as his mind drifted to the impending breakfast. He wasn't sure why he was nervous, but he couldn't help the knot in his stomach.
"Hey," Liam said, startling the blonde.
"What?" Kai glared at him.
"Nothing," Liam smiled. "I'm just teasing you."
"Whatever," Kai scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"What's got your underwear in a bunch?" Liam asked, clearly trying to push Kai's buttons.
"Nothing." Kai sighed and rubbed his temples. He was getting a horrible headache.
"Alright, alright," Liam replied. "So, where do you want to go for breakfast?"
"I don't care," Kai stated, rubbing his forehead.
"I'll pick," Liam smiled.
"You seem rather happy," Kai commented.
"Well, yeah," Liam replied with a huge grin. "I get to hang out with a hot nurse."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kai raised a brow at the reaponse.
"Just a compliment," Liam replied. "Calm down."
Kai huffed. He hated when people called him cute or hot, even though he was. He knew he was, but that hardly mattered. He puffed out his cheeks.
"Stop pouting!" Liam smirked.
"I'm not," Kai snapped.
"Whatever," Liam chuckled.
Kai didn't know what it was about the man, but he seemed to be able to push all his buttons.
"Just leave me alone," Kai mumbled.
"Fine, fine," Liam replied. "I'll just go bother one of the old folks."
"Yeah, please do," Kai said, trying not to smirk.
"Wow, someone's feisty tonight," Liam grinned.
"Yeah, I am," Kai sighed as he responded.
Kai was tired and just wanted to get through the rest of the night. He just had to make it through a few more hours, and then he could go home.
"You want to take a smoke break?" Liam asked.
"No," Kai responded dryly.
Kai heard a call light start to sound. He looked at the board and noticed it was Jean, one of his favorite residents, which gave him the perfect excuse to not go on a smoke break.
"I'll get the light," Kai stated happily.
Kai stood up from his chair and quickly walked to the resident's room.
Jean had suffered a stroke a few years ago and had been in the nursing home ever since. He was a sweet old man and always had a smile on his face.
"Good morning, Jean." Kai smiled as he walked into the room.
"Mornin'," the elderly man said.
"What can I do for you?" Kai asked him with a gentle smile.
"My feet are cold," Jean let Kai know as he pointed toward the foot of the bed.
"Oh, we can't have that." Kai smiled. "I'll get you some socks."
"Thank you, sweetheart," Jean said.
Kai walked to the man's dresser and took out a pair of yellow grippy socks. He pulled back the covers at the man's feet and put them on him.
"Is that better?"
"Much," the man replied.
"You should get some rest." Kai smiled and turned around to leave the room.
"Goodnight, sweetheart."
Kai walked out of the room and headed back to the nurse's station.
"That was quick," Liam said as Kai walked back up.
"It was nothing," Kai replied. "I just got him some socks."
Liam nodded. "Anything else?"
"Nope," Kai stated.
"Alright," Liam shrugged and looked toward the nurse. "I guess I'll go check on a few residents."
"Please do," Kai quickly responded.
As Liam walked away, Kai felt a sense of relief. He was finally able to focus on his work without the assistant teasing him.
"Hey!" Liam suddenly came back.
"What?" Kai scowled.
"I just wanted to say you have a cute ass," Liam winked at him.
Kai's face went bright red.
"Shut up," Kai replied.
"Sorry, I couldn't resist," Liam chuckled.
Kai's cheeks were bright red as he stared down at his desk.
"Calm down," Liam laughed.
"Shut up," Kai repeated.
Liam smirked and walked away. He hoped the CNA would be checking on residents for a while, but he wasn't sure he actually ever did his job properly.
He figured Liam was using it as an excuse to sneak out to smoke. It seemed like that's all he ever did—smoke and steal food from the kitchen.
Nancy hummed as she read a book. She sighed after a moment and closed the book.
"I should do a bed check," she stated, walking down the hall.
Kai folded his arms on the desk in front of him and rested his head against his arms. This guy was going to end up being the death of him. Hopefully he would be like the others and quit after a few more weeks, but he wasn't counting on it.
