Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Informant

Emma, Jack, and Mia gathered at Emma's house the next morning, eager to continue their investigation. The revelation about David Lang had given them a crucial lead, but they knew there was more to uncover. Their first task for the day was to talk to Lila again and see if she had any additional information about Rachel's search for her biological parents or the inheritance dispute.

As they walked to Lila's house, Emma couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. She glanced over her shoulder several times, but the quiet suburban street was empty. She tried to push the thought aside, focusing on the task at hand.

Lila greeted them at the door, looking slightly more composed than the last time they had seen her. She invited them inside, leading them to the living room where they had first discussed Rachel's case.

"Thanks for coming," Lila said, offering them seats. "I've been thinking a lot about Rachel and everything she was going through."

Emma nodded. "Lila, we found out that Rachel was adopted and that she was looking for her biological parents. We also discovered that her biological father is a man named David Lang. Do you know if Rachel ever mentioned anything about him or the inheritance dispute he was involved in?"

Lila's eyes widened in surprise. "Rachel was adopted? She never told me that. But now that you mention it, she did seem more secretive lately. She mentioned finding out something big about her family, but she didn't go into details. She was afraid of what she might uncover."

Jack leaned forward. "Rachel wrote in her journal that she felt like she was being followed. Do you think she might have been scared of someone specific? Did she ever mention seeing anyone suspicious?"

Lila's expression grew thoughtful. "There was one time… a few weeks before she died, she told me she thought someone was watching her. She didn't have any proof, but she was really scared. I thought it was just stress from everything she was dealing with."

Mia asked, "Did she ever talk about meeting anyone new? Someone who might have had a connection to her biological parents?"

Lila shook her head. "Not that I can remember. But she was very secretive those last few weeks. She might have been trying to protect me."

Emma sighed, feeling a mix of frustration and sympathy. "Thanks, Lila. We're just trying to piece together what happened to Rachel. If you remember anything else, please let us know."

As they left Lila's house, Emma's mind was racing. They had a name and some clues, but they needed more concrete evidence. Their next step was to find out more about David Lang's movements and any connections he might have had to Rachel.

Back at Emma's house, they decided to split up tasks to maximize their efficiency. Jack would continue digging into David Lang's background and any recent activities, while Emma and Mia would visit the local archives and library to search for more information on Rachel's adoption and any potential legal disputes involving David.

Jack set up his laptop in the living room, surrounded by notes and articles they had collected so far. He methodically searched through public records, social media profiles, and news articles, looking for any patterns or connections. His eyes narrowed as he found a recent post mentioning David Lang in a heated argument at a local bar. The details were vague, but it was a lead worth following up on.

Meanwhile, Emma and Mia headed to the town's archives. The librarian, Mrs. Watson, was an old family friend and welcomed them warmly.

"Hello, girls. What brings you here today?" Mrs. Watson asked with a smile.

Emma explained their search for information on Rachel's adoption and any related legal disputes. Mrs. Watson's expression grew serious, and she led them to a quiet corner of the library where they could work undisturbed.

"Adoption records can be tricky to navigate," Mrs. Watson said, pulling out several volumes of old records. "But if Rachel's adoption was filed locally, we should be able to find something."

Emma and Mia spent hours sifting through the dusty records, carefully examining each document. They finally found a record of Rachel's adoption, confirming that Margaret Wilson had given her up shortly after birth. There were no details about the biological father, but the adoption papers listed the Johnsons as her adoptive parents.

Mia flipped through another file and found a more recent document. "Emma, look at this. It's a court record from a few months ago. David Lang filed a claim against an estate, but it was contested. It mentions a dispute over inheritance rights."

Emma's eyes widened as she read the document. "This must be what David Lang was arguing about. If Rachel found out she had a claim to the inheritance, it could have made her a target."

They photocopied the documents and returned to Emma's house to share their findings with Jack.

As they gathered around the table, Jack updated them on his discoveries. "David Lang was recently seen arguing at a bar about the inheritance dispute. It seems like he's been under a lot of stress lately. If he saw Rachel as a threat, he might have tried to scare her off."

Emma nodded, laying out the photocopied court documents. "We found these in the archives. It confirms that David Lang was involved in a legal dispute over an inheritance. If Rachel found out she had a claim, it could explain why she was being followed."

Mia added, "We need to find out more about the inheritance itself. Who else was involved, and what exactly was at stake?"

Jack suggested, "Maybe we should talk to some of the people who knew David Lang. If we can find out more about his recent activities and who he's been associating with, it might give us more clues."

Emma agreed. "We also need to keep an eye on David himself. If he's behind Rachel's death, he might make another move to protect his secret."

---

Over the next few days, they gathered more information. Jack visited the bar where David Lang was seen arguing, speaking to the bartender and some regulars. They learned that David had been increasingly agitated and paranoid, often muttering about people trying to take what was his.

Emma and Mia continued to dig into the legal aspects of the inheritance, discovering that it involved a significant amount of money from a distant relative's estate. They also found out that Rachel, as David's biological daughter, had a legitimate claim to a portion of the inheritance, which would have been substantial.

Their investigation was yielding results, but it also made them more aware of the dangers they faced. David Lang was volatile and potentially dangerous, and they needed to be cautious.

One evening, as they were reviewing their findings, Emma's phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number. She opened it, her heart pounding as she read the words: "Stop digging into Rachel's death, or you'll be next."

Emma's hands trembled as she showed the message to Jack and Mia. "Someone knows what we're doing. We're getting close, and they're trying to scare us off."

Jack's jaw tightened. "We can't let them intimidate us. We're doing this for Rachel."

Mia nodded, her eyes steely with determination. "We need to be more careful, but we can't stop now. We're closer than ever to finding the truth."

Emma took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and resolve. They were walking a dangerous path, but they owed it to Rachel to see it through. As they planned their next steps, they knew that every piece of information brought them closer to solving the mystery—and closer to danger.
