Chapter 17 - Steel Sword

When he woke up, Leroy jumped out of bed, took his leather pouch from under the pillow, attached it to his belt, and put on his leather boots.

'First, I'll have to go see where I can get a bath,' he thought as he unlocked the door and went outside the room, not forgetting to lock it before going downstairs.

When he arrived, he found Whitney in the same spot as yesterday.

"Hey Whitney, do you have any baths I could use around here?" Leroy asked as he waved to Whitney and approached the receptionist's counter.

"Bath? We don't hold a charity over here, you hear? If you want a bath, you can go to the local bathhouse. It's straight ahead from the Inn." Whitney said without looking up, seemingly focused on the book he was reading.

'Books, huh? I don't know how to read them completely, and my reading capacities are minimal. Still, they'd probably be a useful information resource,' Leroy thought when suddenly an idea came to mind.

'Maybe I can pay Whitney to teach me. He even did that silly dance for money. I'd bet that he'd do anything,' Leroy thought as he remembered Whitney's expression yesterday. Suddenly, Leroy shakes his head left and right as he tries to get rid of the disgusting image from his head.

'Maybe later,' Leroy thought as he turned around and headed outside, going towards the bath.

Arriving at a old house made out of primarily wood with a stone base, and a sign hanging outside on it was inscribed with the words: Helmin Bathhouse.

Going inside, Leroy was greeted by a counter and two doors on each side of the room. One was covered by a blue cloth, while the other was covered by a pink one.

Leroy walked towards the receptionist as she greeted him.

"Hello, customer. Would you like a bath? It only has 5 copper, which is the cheapest price in town." She said as she brought down her hands to the countertop, clearly trying to show her cleavage to entice customers.

'What's she doing? Seducing me? She looks dumb,' Leroy thought as he dropped five copper on the countertop and left towards the blue cloth part of the bathhouse without even looking at or saying a word to the woman.

'Huh,' the woman was left there standing speechless.

"Have I gotten old?" She said while stuttering.

After getting a bath, Leroy also decided to wash his clothes in the water. It wasn't allowed, but it wasn't like anyone was watching him right now.

Getting out of the bath, he headed to the side where a contraption stood. It was blowing hot air constantly, so Leroy decided to grab a chair nearby and put his clothes under the hot air to dry.

Half an hour later, he came out of the Bath House and started heading towards another corner of Mercenary Street.

Arriving at the left topmost corner, Leroy finally saw his destination.

It was a small shop with a sign showcasing two greatswords hanging down and an anvil in the middle. The words were written on top of them.

"Burning Knights Blacksmith"

'Still, the same god damned names,' Leroy thought as he headed inside.

"Anyone here?" Leroy shouted as he entered the room.

"Wait just a second," a deep, gruff-sounding voice said from deeper inside, what looked like the smithing area from what Leroy could guess based on the heat coming from inside the other room.

A few minutes later, a man arrived. He was cleaning off what looked like black tar on his hands by swiping them up and down on his clothes.

'Does he have no care for his possessions at all?' Leroy thought.

"Names Jacob, whatcha come here to get young lad?" the man now known as Jacob asked.

Jacob had blue eyes, blond hair, and a clean-shaved face. He was currently almost wholly covered in black ash.

"I'm Leroy. I came here on Jack's recommendation. He told me I could get some good starting weapons and armor here for a low price."

Leroy said as he finally turned towards Jacob. He had been looking around the shop for a while now when Jacob had finally come inside.

"Well, young lad, you've come to the right place," The man said, his tone somehow sounding softer, almost warmer to Leroy.

'Is it because I mentioned Jack? Truly, connections are everything, be it in the slums or outside of them. If you had good connections, then you could live a happy life.' Leroy thought while remembering how Travis, as the only tavern owner, had become friendly with all gangs in the city and had achieved a relatively safe haven inside the slums.

'Until it wasn't a safe haven, that is.' Frowning, Leroy decided to ask Jacob.

"I'm looking for a longsword and any kind of armor that you would suggest."

"A longsword, eh? Well, it can work. As for the armor, only a shoulder pad and a little bit of armor for your guts, and it'll be fine. You don't look like you'd be able to carry more than that and fight as well as you can," said Jacob as he studied Leroy's body.

"All right, tell ya what, I'll give ya a longsword for three large copper and the armor for three more. I'd say that's a good price, ain't it?" Jacob asked as he went to retrieve the items.

"All right, I'll take them," replied Leroy.

'From what I saw of the price tags on these things around the shop, that's a hell of a deal,' Leroy thought as he looked at the longsword he had been prepared to buy.

It was completely plain and made from what looked like regular steel, but it still cost a whopping 8 large copper.

Leroy didn't see any shoulder pads anywhere but guessed they were about the same.

Finally, after a while, Jacob returned and put three items on the counter.

"Here, a steel longsword for three large copper, a shoulder pad, and Plackart for another three large copper, totally at six large copper for everything."

Bringing out six large copper, Leroy tossed them on the table and grabbed the sword, only to notice that he had no sheath where he could keep it while on the move. Deciding that his belt would have to do for now, Leroy started doing just that when he heard Jacob.

"Stop, stop, stop. I'll just give u a scabbard and a customized belt for it."

"How much?" Asked Leroy immediately

"Free, alright. I owe Jack, so I can do at least this much."

Turning around, Jacob seemed to grab something from under the counter. As he came up, Leroy could see a black sheath and belt.

"They are pretty old but should still work just fine," Jacob said as he handed them to Leroy.

Leroy decided that the best decision was to wear them immediately, so he did just that. A few moments later, he was equipped with his new sword, shoulder pads, and Plackart.

"That's all. Thanks for the help, Jacob," Leroy said as he headed outside.

"All right, see you around, kiddo!" Jacob said as Leroy finally vanished behind the door.

'Cold kid, ain't he? The entire time, he didn't show a single emotion besides disgust at the beginning.'
