Chereads / Reborn With The Author System / Chapter 5 - Xavier [ V ]

Chapter 5 - Xavier [ V ]

Xavier was ecstatic after dealing with phantom and jumping into the portal of rebirth, in his mind, he kept praying this new world should be a place he could use his author class to the fullest.

As Xavier drifted through the void of rebirth, where light and color doesn't exist, the frantic thought of getting reborn kept coursing through his mind, filling him with even more joy.

Xavier couldn't see or hear in this dark place, he could only feel himself falling. The suction force sending him down was slow and gentle.

Suddenly, the initial speed and gentleness disappeared as he felt his body getting sent down at a speed he couldn't explain.

Before he could react to his situation, Xavier found himself greeted by light and scent and he quickly realized he had been reborn!

But where? He asked himself as he felt all his senses returning.

As Xavier regained consciousness, he found himself lying on a rough straw mat in a dimly lit room. As Xavier struggled to sit up, he felt a wave of unexplainable weakness wash over his new body but he managed to endure it.

Scanning his surroundings, he discovered he was in a small dark room with barely enough space to contain a proper bed. The structure of the room was akin to those found in medieval times and the only item in this small room was the tiny straw mat he laid on.

The room also appears to have no windows which made the musty smell of brick and heat to radiate strongly across the room, making him uncomfortable

"Where am I?" he asked himself.

His eyes observed the room deeply once again, trying to obtain a clue of where exactly he was but there was no clue except that it was a small room with an ancient building structure.

'Maybe I can use some help from the system but let me check my character status first. System, open character status,' he commanded.

"That's quite sad, I guess I'll have to find out about this place by myself for now," Xavier sighed heavily, "Perhaps exploring outside will give me some answers."

With this consideration, he rose to his feet and made his way to the door and tried to open it. But his hopes of going outside when he discovered the door was locked from the outside, trapping him in the unfamiliar room.

Xavier tried again and this time he applied a little more strength in his hands to pull the door towards himself but he couldn't even cause the door to budge.

He kept trying until he heard footsteps from outside, he assumed his struggling to open the door must have drawn the attention of someone outside and they might be making their way towards him.

He also heard distant voices.

"Did you hear that noise just now? I think someone is trying to get out of their cell," the voice was a hoarse sounding male voice.

"You're trying to mess with me again because of my hearing problem, huh, do you really think anyone in these cells would be able to move for the next 2 months," another voice replied, questioning the first speaker.

Judging from what the first speaker said and how he was locked in a small room from the outside, Xavier came to a conclusion and that conclusion was that his identity is either that of a slave or a prisoner.

'I need to understand my situation better and it would be faster if I am able to have a better view outside,' he pondered, then he struggled to open the door once again.

After he pushed the door, the two footsteps became faster as they appeared to be approaching the door.

With a creaking sound, the door opened and two men dressed in silver armor and a sword strapped on their waist came into view.

One was very tall and huge with muscles, he is obviously the owner of the first voice. The other was slim and tall, he had a gentle face that matched the second voice.

Xavier could tell they are guards based off their appearance but where are they guarding? A prison or a slave house?

Xavier also noticed the strange gazes of theirs fixed on him as though they were staring at a ghost.

Xavier observed them for a while and thought, 'Why are they looking at me like that? Should I strike up a conversation? I think that would work,'

"Hey," he greeted them with a calm tone, he tried to make his tone extremely friendly as well.

After he spoke, he noticed the eyes of the two guards widening even more, it was as though they had just witnessed a cow speak human language.

But one of them snapped out of his daze.

"He's awake? No way. We need to inform the mistress right now immediately," the slim one reacted quite dramatically.

His dumbfounded voice woke the muscular one from his dazed state.

"Go and inform the mistress or any of her assistants, I will stay here and watch over him."

The slim guard nodded and ran away to inform the so-called mistress while the muscular guard placed his hand on the tilt of his sword, his vigilant eyes observing Xavier curiously.

He looks like he would not hesitate to pull his sword and kill Xavier if he moved and this made Xavier even more confused, why are they acting this way with him?

Was it a taboo for a fellow human being to say hey or are they not used to seeing prisoners/slaves?

Also, who is this mistress they talked about? Is she some kind of slave owner or probably a wicked witch that experiments on live humans, maybe dead ones as well since these guards reacted strangely after discovering he is alive and sane.

"Excuse me, could you tell me where I am?" Xavier asked, trying to engage the guard in conversation in hopes of gaining insight into his surroundings before the mistress appears.

With the help of his character control skills, he would have been able to get what he wanted faster and easier, but since those weren't available at the moment, he had to use conversations to find out where he was.

Nevertheless, what Xavier did not know is that his question would make his current situation even more disturbing.
