Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: 反骨の魂 (Hankotsu no Tamashii / The Soul of Rebellion)

Saijo's heart pounded in his chest as he ran, the early morning mist swirling around his legs. His breaths were ragged, the air cold and biting, but he didn't stop. He couldn't stop. "Not yet... not enough," he muttered to himself, his voice hoarse. The words were a mantra, pushing him forward as he dribbled the ball across the field, weaving through imaginary opponents.

He remembered the bitter taste of defeat, the humiliation of the match, and the despair that had nearly consumed him. But more than anything, he remembered the vow he had made to himself under the rain-soaked sky, the silent promise to become stronger, to never let his pride be shattered again.

The field was empty, save for him and the ball. His muscles screamed in protest, fatigue gnawing at his limbs, but Saijo ignored the pain. He had to get better. He had to push past his limits. His mind flashed back to Coach Takeda's words: "Even though you lost the match, you still have a chance to join the team based on your performance."

That glimmer of hope was all Saijo needed. His face darkened, etched with a new determination. He would not be defeated again. He would rise from the ashes of his failure, stronger and more resolute than before.

The next day, during warm-up drills, Saijo's exhaustion was evident. His legs felt like lead, his body protesting every movement. But his eyes burned with a fierce resolve. He pushed himself harder, surpassing what his body could handle. He couldn't afford to be weak, not now.

The first-year players watched him, their own fatigue mirrored in their faces, but none as intense as Saijo's. Gon, timid and unsure, glanced at him with a mix of awe and concern. Roy, still seething with envy, gritted his teeth and pushed himself harder, determined not to be outdone.

Coach Takeda observed them quietly, his sharp eyes taking in every detail. When the warm-ups ended, he called the team together, his expression unreadable. The first-years gathered, nerves taut as bowstrings, awaiting his judgment.

"Yesterday was a test," Coach Takeda began, his voice calm. "A test of your resilience, your adaptability, and your spirit. You all showed potential, but only five can join the main team."

Saijo's heart hammered in his chest. This was it. This was the moment that would define his future. He glanced at his teammates, each of them equally tense.

"The players who will join the main team are: Saijo, Gon, Roy, Daisuke, and Elvis."

A collective gasp rose from the group. Saijo felt a surge of relief and triumph, but it was tempered by the shock of the final name. Elvis? How had he made it, and not Kaito?

Kaito stood frozen, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Coach, there must be a mistake," he stammered. "Why not me?"

Coach Takeda's gaze was steady. "Elvis showed a different kind of determination. He has qualities that this team needs. Kaito, your journey isn't over. This is just a setback. Learn from it, and come back stronger."

The first-years were stunned. The reality of their situation settled over them like a heavy shroud. They had fought so hard, and now the path diverged. Saijo looked at Elvis, who stood silently, his expression unreadable. There was a story there, one that Saijo didn't understand yet, but he respected the decision.

As the team dispersed, Saijo's mind was a whirlwind of emotions. Relief, joy, confusion, and a renewed sense of determination. The road ahead was still long and fraught with challenges, but he had taken the first step.

Kaito's defeated expression haunted him. He couldn't let himself be consumed by victory. He had to stay focused, had to continue pushing his limits. There was no room for complacency. He had to honor his fallen comrade by becoming the best player he could be.

The chapter closed with Saijo standing alone on the field, the morning sun casting long shadows. His journey was far from over. The tryout arc had taken a new turn, filled with unexpected twists and revelations. Fans were left in suspense, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Saijo's story.

Would he be able to live up to his potential and prove himself on the main team? What challenges awaited him and his fellow first-years? The questions lingered, the anticipation building. The soul of rebellion burned bright within Saijo, a beacon of hope and defiance. The journey continued, and the stakes had never been higher.
