Chapter 9 - THADDEUS

Prince Thaddeus lounged in his opulent bedroom, the rich tapestries and luxurious furnishings a testament to his privileged life. The soft glow of candlelight cast a warm hue over the room, where he reclined on a plush bed draped in silk sheets. Beside him, a beautiful courtier laughed at his every word, her eyes sparkling with feigned admiration.

There was one of careless abandon, the sounds of merriment echoing softly through the grand halls. Thaddeus, lost in the allure of his companion, failed to notice the heavy footsteps approaching the door.

Suddenly, the door swung open with a force that sent it crashing against the wall. Standing in the doorway, her face a mask of barely contained fury, was Queen Isolde. Her piercing gaze swept over the scene, taking in the disheveled state of the room and the compromising position of her son.

"Thaddeus!" she hissed, her voice cutting through the room like a blade. "What is the meaning of this?"

Thaddeus barely glanced up, his expression one of bored indifference. "Mother," he drawled, "to what do I owe the pleasure?"

The courtier, sensing the gravity of the situation, quickly gathered her belongings and slipped out of the room, leaving Thaddeus to face Queen Isolde's ire alone.

Isolde's eyes narrowed as she approached the bed, her steps deliberate and measured. "This is how you choose to spend your time?" she demanded. "While our kingdom faces threats from every side, you indulge in these... distractions?"

Thaddeus shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "It's just a bit of fun. Don't be so dramatic."

Queen Isolde's expression hardened. "You need to start taking your role seriously, Thaddeus. Your sister, Elara, is already being groomed for leadership. But I want you to be the one who rules this kingdom."

Thaddeus arched an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Elara? She's too caught up in her own world. She doesn't have what it takes to rule."

"Precisely," Isolde snapped. "That's why you need to show everyone that you are the better choice. You need to look the part, act the part, and prove that you are more capable than she is. The throne should be yours, Thaddeus. But you must earn it."

Thaddeus rolled his eyes, clearly unmoved by her words. "Is this another one of your lectures? I've heard it all before. Relax, Mother. Everything is under control."

"Under control?" Isolde's voice was dripping with sarcasm. "You have shown nothing but incompetence. Your actions are a disgrace to the crown. Meanwhile, Elara is joining the court and meeting with your father in the king's study room. Every time she does, she looks more important, more like a leader."

Thaddeus's smirk faltered slightly, annoyance flickering in his eyes. "Elara again? She's always trying to outshine me."

"Exactly," Isolde said, her tone softer but still insistent. "You need to start taking your role seriously, Thaddeus. Your sister is making you look bad. You must step up and prove you are the rightful heir."

Thaddeus sighed, his patience wearing thin. "Look, I get it. You think I'm a failure. But I assure you, when the time comes, I'll handle it. Until then, let me live my life."

Queen Isolde's eyes softened slightly, a flicker of genuine concern breaking through her stern exterior. "Thaddeus," she said more quietly, "if you do not change your ways, our kingdom will fall. You must take your role seriously, or we will all suffer the consequences."

Thaddeus dismissed her with a wave of his hand. "I'll deal with it when I need to. Trust me, Mother. I've got this."

As Queen Isolde turned to leave, she paused at the door, her voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "And remember, Thaddeus, Elara has been joining the court and meeting with your father in the king's study room. Every time she does, she looks more important. You need to show that you are more capable and deserving."

Thaddeus gave her a lazy smile. "Don't worry, Mother. I know exactly what I'm doing."

With one last look of disappointment, Queen Isolde left the room, her footsteps echoing down the corridor. As the door closed behind her, Thaddeus lay back on the bed, unfazed by the confrontation. He dismissed his mother's concerns as overblown, confident in his ability to charm his way out of any situation.

Deep down, Thaddeus harbored a secret that he kept from everyone, including his mother. He had clandestine connections to Valoria, the neighboring kingdom that threatened Astoria's peace. This connection was part of a larger, more sinister plan he had been cultivating, a plan that, if revealed, could spell disaster for his family and his kingdom. He smirked to himself, the flicker of his dark intentions hidden beneath his careless exterior.
