"Where did she go?"
Alyssa took in long, ragged breaths as she moved through the shadowy streets, lit dimly by the stars, her boots trying their best to create as little noise as possible as they skidded through the damp cobblestones. Her chest tightened with every step, both from exhaustion and the icy grip of fear that gnawed at her, eating her from the inside.
The once-familiar streets that she could go through with her eyes closed felt foreign to her, the houses towering over her, looking down at her, monitoring her movement, threatening to tell her hunters. The dark windows gave her no comfort other than telling her that behind one of them, a watchful eye could be peering out and that peering eye might be the person who was after her.
