Chapter 9 - Ambush in the Depths of Deimos

— We're under attack! someone shouted.

Jaxon and Paula barely had time to react as unknown enemies poured into the chamber from multiple entrances, their weapons blazing. The attackers were clad in dark, high-tech armor, their faces hidden behind visors.

— Get to cover! Jaxon yelled, firing his blaster at the nearest enemy.

Paula ducked behind a stack of crates, the rough wood splintering under the enemy's relentless barrage. She took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her blaster in her hands, and then popped up from her cover. Her eyes narrowed in focus, she fired with deadly precision, each shot finding its mark. The energy bolts sizzled through the air, striking down attackers with pinpoint accuracy.

— We need to regroup and find a way out of here! Paula shouted over the din.

Jaxon nodded, his eyes scanning the room for an escape route. The enemies were relentless, their coordinated attack leaving little room for error.

— This way! he called, pointing towards a maintenance tunnel on the far side of the chamber. We can lose them in the tunnels!

Paula covered Jaxon as he made his way to the tunnel entrance, taking out several attackers with precise shots. Once there, Jaxon motioned for Paula to follow.

— Go, go, go! he urged, firing back at the pursuing enemies.

They sprinted down the tunnel, their footsteps echoing in the confined space. The sounds of battle grew fainter as they put distance between themselves and their attackers.

— We need to find out who they are and what they want, Paula said, her voice breathless but determined.

Jaxon nodded, his mind racing with the implications of their discovery. The workers, the teleportation technology, and now these unknown enemies—everything was connected, and they were determined to uncover the truth.

The tunnel stretched on, each step taken with trepidation as Jaxon and Paula delved deeper into the darkness. The further they advanced, the colder and more oppressive the air became. They moved silently, their senses heightened, aware that danger could lurk around any corner.

Suddenly, the tunnel opened into a vast chamber, and the sight that met their eyes stopped them in their tracks. In the center of the chamber stood a towering figure, an imposing presence that radiated an aura of pure menace.

The creature stood over two meters tall, his body a mass of rippling muscle. His skin had an unnatural sheen, as if it were made of obsidian. His eyes glowed a deep red, burning with an intensity that seemed to pierce through the very soul. His face, a grotesque mask of brutality, twisted into a sneer as he looked upon Jaxon and Paula.

— Welcome, his voice echoing through the chamber like the growl of a beast. I've been expecting you.

Jaxon tightened his grip on his blaster, knowing full well that it would be useless against this monstrous foe. Paula mirrored his actions, her face a mask of determination despite the fear she felt.

— What do you want? Jaxon demanded, his voice steady despite the pounding of his heart.

— I am Xairum, harbinger of your doom, Xairum replied with a cruel smile. You have meddled in affairs far beyond your understanding, and now you shall pay the price.

Without warning, Xairum moved with a speed that defied his massive size. In the blink of an eye, he crossed the distance between them, a blur of dark motion. His massive fist crashed into the wall beside Jaxon with a thunderous boom, the force of the impact reverberating through the entire chamber. The sheer power of the strike was devastating, sending a shower of debris raining down like a storm of jagged stones. A large chunk of the wall crumbled away, revealing the immense strength contained within Xairum's monstrous frame. The ground shook under the force, dust billowing up in thick clouds as if the very room was collapsing under the weight of his wrath.

Jaxon and Paula barely had time to react. They dove to the side, narrowly avoiding being crushed by the falling debris. Jaxon rolled to his feet, firing his blaster at Xairum, but the energy bolts dissipated harmlessly against the enemy's skin.

— Your weapons are useless against me, Xairum taunted, his eyes gleaming with sadistic pleasure. Now, you will suffer.

With a roar, Xairum lunged at Jaxon, his fists swinging with terrifying force. Jaxon dodged, but the sheer power of Xairum's blows sent shockwaves through the air, knocking him off balance. Paula took the opportunity to fire at Xairum, aiming for his head, but the bullets ricocheted off his skin, leaving him unharmed.

— We need to find a way to stop him, Paula shouted, her voice strained with effort as she evaded another of Xairum's attacks.

Jaxon nodded, his mind racing as he tried to formulate a plan. Xairum was clearly impervious to their conventional weapons, and his strength was unmatched. They needed to outthink him, to find a weakness they could exploit.

As Xairum advanced on them, Jaxon spotted a series of support beams lining the chamber. An idea began to form in his mind.

— Paula, we need to bring this place down on him, he called out. Aim for the support beams!

Paula understood immediately. She took a deep breath, steadying her aim, and began firing at the support beams. Each shot was precise and calculated, her blaster humming with energy as it released powerful bolts that struck the beams with pinpoint accuracy. Jaxon quickly joined in, his shots synchronizing with Paula's. Their combined firepower caused the metal beams to crack and splinter, sending fissures racing along the structure like lightning.

Xairum, realizing their intent, let out a thunderous roar of fury that echoed through the chamber. His eyes blazed with rage as he charged at them with renewed ferocity, each step shaking the ground beneath his feet. The air around him seemed to vibrate with the sheer intensity of his anger.

The chamber began to shake violently as the structural integrity weakened. Dust and debris rained down from the ceiling, and the walls groaned under the strain. Xairum's massive fists pounded the ground and walls in his attempt to close the distance, sending shockwaves through the chamber. But Jaxon and Paula were relentless, their focus unwavering. They continued to fire at the beams, their determination evident in their fierce expressions.

With each shot, the beams weakened further, cracking and splintering under the relentless assault. The chamber trembled, and the sounds of cracking metal and crumbling stone grew louder, a cacophony of impending collapse. Despite the chaos, Jaxon and Paula maintained their precision, determined to bring down the chamber and stop Xairum's rampage.

With a final, resounding crack, the support beams gave way. The ceiling began to collapse, large chunks of debris falling all around. Xairum let out a roar of rage and frustration as he was buried beneath the rubble.

Jaxon and Paula ran for their lives, sprinting towards the tunnel entrance. They barely made it out before the entire chamber collapsed behind them, the sound of falling debris echoing in their ears.

Breathless and covered in dust, they paused to catch their breath.

— Do you think that stopped him? Paula asked, her voice shaky.

— I don't know, Jaxon replied, his eyes fixed on the rubble. But it will at least slow him down.

They stood in silence for a moment, the only sounds their ragged breathing and the distant rumble of settling debris. Jaxon turned to Paula, determination hardening his features.

— We need to keep moving. If Xairum survived that, he'll come after us with everything he's got.

— Agreed. We need to find out who sent him and why. It's obvious he has a link with the worker abductions and the advanced technologies we've seen on the Moon.

As they made their way deeper into the tunnels, the oppressive darkness seemed to close in around them, but they pressed on, their resolve unshaken. They knew that the fight was far from over. Somewhere in the depths of these ancient corridors lay the key to stopping Xairum and delivering the workers.
