When she finally reached Vaughn's house, her chest was heaving with exertion, and she had to pause for a moment to catch her breath.
The large estate loomed right before her. She hesitated for a brief moment.
But then she steeled herself and walked up to the front door.
She knocked, her heart in her throat, her mind racing with a thousand different thoughts. She waited, every second stretching out into what felt like an eternity. Finally, the door opened, and the housekeeper, an older woman with kind eyes, appeared.
"Miss Nora," the housekeeper greeted her with a warm smile. "What brings you here at this hour?"
Nora's voice trembled as she spoke. "I need to see Vaughn. Is he here?"
The housekeeper's smile faltered, and she looked at Nora with a hint of sympathy in her eyes. "Oh, dear, you just missed him. He left a short while ago."
