Eliza and Jannie stepped out of the house and just as they made their way to Jannie's car, Eliza's phone buzzed violently against her hip, pulling her from her thoughts. She fumbled for her phone, her fingers numb and unsteady.
Glancing at the screen, she saw Anna's name flashing urgently. The reminder of the presentation she had completely forgotten about hit her like a ton of bricks had fallen on her head.
With a resigned sigh, she answered the call. "Hello?"
"Where are you?" Anna's voice came through, sharp and impatient.
Eliza bit her lip, her heart racing. "Um... I'm just on the way," she lied, the words tasting bitter in her mouth.
Anna didn't seem convinced. "Okay... well, hurry up. There's only twenty minutes before the meeting."
Eliza felt a knot tighten in her chest. "I'll be there."
