After retracing their steps through the narrow, rocky paths, Johan and Aoi finally emerged from the cave into the crisp mountain air. Exhausted but relieved, they exchanged faint smiles as the sunlight greeted them once more.
"Well," Aoi said, stretching her arms, "that's one mining mission completed. Ready to head back to Henry and Otto?"
"Yeah, but—" Johan paused mid-sentence, his sharp ears catching faint footsteps in the distance. The sound was accompanied by the clinking of chains and a weak, labored groan. His survival instincts flared to life immediately.
"Aoi," Johan whispered, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind a large boulder. "Someone's here."
"Someone? You mean they're not locals?" Aoi whispered back, following Johan's line of sight.
