March 10, 2007 – Coast City, Quantum Research Facility
The hum of machinery reverberated throughout the laboratory. Dr. Elias Vander, a renowned physicist with wild gray hair and an obsession with the unknown, stood before his life's work: the Dimensional Rift Stabilizer. The device, a towering construct of metal rings and glowing crystals, hummed with energy as it approached activation.
Dr. Vander paced around the control panel, his fingers trembling as he adjusted the dials. "This is it," he muttered to himself. "The breakthrough humanity needs. No more limits. No more unanswered questions. A window into the multiverse will revolutionize our understanding of physics."
His assistant, Dr. Mara Trent, eyed him nervously. "Elias, are you sure this is safe? We've run simulations, but the energy spikes during activation are... unprecedented."
He waved her off. "Mara, progress requires risk. Do you think Einstein hesitated? Newton? If this succeeds, we'll be hailed as the pioneers who unlocked the secrets of interdimensional travel."
The countdown began. The stabilizer's rings began spinning, faster and faster, as the crystals in their cores emitted blinding pulses of blue light. The air in the lab grew heavy, thick with static.
10... 9... 8...
"Elias, the energy levels are exceeding the threshold!" Mara shouted.
"Push through it!" Vander barked, his eyes gleaming with manic determination.
7... 6... 5...
A deep, guttural rumble shook the facility. Monitors displayed erratic readings. An otherworldly howl echoed through the room, sending shivers down Mara's spine.
"Elias, we need to shut it down!"
"No!" He slammed his fist on the console. "We're so close!"
4... 3... 2...
The stabilizer's core erupted with a surge of light, tearing a shimmering rift in the fabric of space. The howling grew louder, resonating with a primal, otherworldly force. Through the rift, shadows writhed and shifted—a chaotic, unrelenting storm of dark energy.
For a moment, Vander was speechless, his breath caught in his throat. "We did it," he whispered. "We've pierced the veil..."
But his awe turned to horror as figures emerged from the rift. Dark, semi-corporeal shapes moved with terrifying speed. Their forms flickered, resembling swirling smoke with piercing, fiery eyes.
"Shut it down!" Mara screamed, frantically typing commands into the console.
"It's too late!" Vander shouted, shielding his face as the rift expanded. One of the shadowy entities lashed out, its tendrils of dark energy striking a nearby technician. The man let out a bloodcurdling scream as his body contorted, his veins glowing an eerie blue. His eyes turned pitch black before his body collapsed in a heap.
More shadows poured through the rift, each targeting another person in the lab. One by one, they fell, their bodies transformed or destroyed.
Vander staggered back, his voice trembling. "This... this wasn't supposed to happen. They weren't supposed to come through!"
Mara grabbed his arm. "We have to leave! Now!"
As alarms blared and the facility descended into chaos, Vander's gaze remained fixed on the rift. "No," he whispered, tears streaming down his face. "This is my work. My responsibility."
Mara yanked him toward the exit. "Your responsibility is to survive! Come on!"
The two ran as the shadows overtook the lab. Behind them, the stabilizer exploded in a burst of dark energy, sending a shockwave rippling across Coast City. The rift didn't close—it hung in the air like a wound, leaking tendrils of dark energy that spread across the city.

The fallout from this event could now set the stage for the jinns infecting humans, creating the "gifted" individuals in Coast City.
