Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Love at first site

Ethan Parker adjusted his thick glasses as he navigated the bustling hallways of Riverside University. The first day of his sophomore year had arrived, bringing with it a mix of excitement and anxiety. As a top student in the Computer Science department, Ethan was well-known for his academic prowess but remained largely invisible in the social hierarchy of the university.

Ethan's appearance did little to bolster his social standing. His wardrobe consisted mostly of graphic tees featuring obscure video game references, paired with jeans that his mother had bought him the year before. His unruly brown hair often fell into his eyes, which he would sweep away with a quick flick of his hand. Despite his nondescript appearance, his eyes held a spark of intelligence and kindness that few noticed.

Ethan's day began with a chemistry lecture, a subject he found fascinating despite it not being his major. He made his way to the large lecture hall, clutching his worn-out notebook and a pen. Finding a seat near the back, he settled in and began to review his notes from the previous year.

As students filed in, Ethan kept his head down, lost in his world of equations and chemical reactions. The noise level rose as friends reunited and exchanged stories of their summer adventures. Ethan tuned it all out, focusing instead on the familiar comfort of his studies.

The lecture started, and Professor Mitchell began to explain the course objectives. Ethan diligently took notes, absorbing every detail. Halfway through the lecture, the door at the back of the hall opened, and a soft murmur spread through the room. Ethan glanced up briefly and saw her: Jessica Hayes.

Jessica was everything Ethan was not. Tall, blonde, and effortlessly stylish, she commanded attention wherever she went.

She was the kind of girl who seemed to glide through life, her every step radiating confidence. Jessica was the star of the university's volleyball team, a straight-A student, and the president of the student council. Her popularity was unmatched, and Ethan had never spoken to her before.

As Jessica walked past him to find a seat, Ethan's heart skipped a beat. He quickly looked back down at his notes, but his concentration was shattered. He could still feel her presence, like a gravitational pull drawing his eyes back to her. For the rest of the lecture, he stole glances at her, unable to focus on anything else.

When the lecture ended, Ethan lingered in his seat, waiting for the crowd to disperse. He watched as Jessica chatted with her friends, her laughter ringing through the hall. Ethan sighed, knowing that someone like her would never notice someone like him.

Gathering his things, he walked out of the lecture hall, already planning his study schedule for the week. As he turned the corner, he saw Jessica struggling with a stack of books and papers. Without thinking, he rushed over to help.

"Here, let me give you a hand," he offered, his voice shaky.

Jessica looked up, surprised. "Oh, thank you! That's very kind of you."

Ethan carefully took the top half of her stack, balancing them with his own books. They walked together to the student lounge, where Jessica was meeting her friends.

"I'm Ethan, by the way," he introduced himself as they reached the lounge.

"Jessica," she replied with a warm smile.

"Thanks again, Ethan. You're a lifesaver."

"No problem," Ethan said, feeling a rush of warmth at her smile. "Anytime."

As he walked away, Ethan felt a strange mix of emotions. Part of him knew that his chances with Jessica were slim to none. But another part of him, the hopeful, romantic part, saw this as the beginning of something more. Little did he know that this simple act of kindness would set in motion a series of events that would change his life forever.
