Chapter 20 - Jane

Emily returned to her hotel and sank into a plush armchair, ready to rest. Just as she was about to close her eyes, Lauretta walked in with a concerned expression.

"Emily, we've got a call from headquarters. I scheduled a meeting, and it's in five minutes..

"Five minutes?" Emily exclaimed, almost crying out. "I needed some shut-eye."

"Just get me a bottle of water," she added, trying to muster some energy.

As Lauretta set up the system, Emily grumbled under her breath, "What do they want this time?" She took a deep breath and tried to steady herself as the screen flickered to life.

The faces of the board members appeared one by one, including her uncle Michael and aunt Sarah, both looking stern and impatient.

"Good afternoon, everyone," Emily began, forcing a professional smile.

"Emily," her uncle Michael started, "we've been reviewing your progress in Silverwood, and there are concerns about the pace of your investigation and business development."

Her aunt Sarah nodded in agreement. "It seems things are moving slower than anticipated. We need results, and we need them soon."

Emily straightened up, feeling a surge of determination. "I understand your concerns, but I assure you that significant progress is being made. The situation in Silverwood is more complex than we initially thought. The local brewery, for example, has outdated machinery and poor staff management under Mr. Titus Johnson. These are issues that require careful handling and time to resolve."

Michael frowned. "Time is not a luxury we can afford, Emily. Investors are getting anxious, and we need to show them that we're making headway."

"I understand the urgency, but rushing things will only jeopardize the entire operation," Emily countered, her voice steady. "I've been building trust with the local community and gathering crucial information. We need to approach this with patience and precision."

Sarah sighed, clearly unimpressed. "We appreciate your efforts, Emily, but it's clear you need additional support. Therefore, we've decided to send someone to assist you."

Emily's eyes widened in surprise. "That's not necessary. I can handle this on my own."

Michael shook his head. "Let's put it to a vote."

Before Emily could respond, the board members began casting their votes. To her dismay, the majority sided with Michael and Sarah.

"It's decided," Michael announced with finality. "You'll have the help you need."

Emily's heart sank. She knew this was part of her uncle and aunt's plan to undermine her. "I don't need anyone else. Extra hands will only complicate things."

Sarah smiled, a hint of triumph in her eyes. "It's already been settled, Emily. You'll have the help you need."

The board members nodded in agreement, their decision final.

As the call ended, Emily exhaled deeply, feeling the weight of their interference. She glanced at Lauretta, who handed her the bottle of water.

"Thanks," Emily said, taking a long sip. "Looks like things just got a lot more complicated."

Emily was preparing to go to the Johnsons' factory, going over the documents at hand for final corrections after adding the new clauses they had earlier discussed. Her focus was intense, each word carefully considered. Just then, the hotel landline rang, breaking her concentration.

Lauretta picked up the call, her face a mask of professionalism. After a short conversation, she walked over to where Emily was seated.

"Uhmm, the representative from Walton is here," Lauretta said cautiously.

"What!" Emily exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise. "So soon? This early?"

She sighed deeply, a mixture of frustration and resignation on her face. "Ok, we'll meet him downstairs and move together."

Lauretta looked puzzled. "Do we take him along? He might be trouble."

Emily shook her head, her resolve firm. "No, it's fine. We have sealed the Walton deal already. Let's go."

With that, they gathered their things and walked out of the hotel room. The tension was palpable, the air thick with the weight of impending challenges. As they made their way to the lobby, Emily mentally prepared herself for the encounter, determined to maintain control over the situation.

As they arrived at the Johnsons' factory, Alex was dismounting from his motorbike. Emily waved and called out, "Hello, Alex."

Alex smiled, ready to greet her, but before he could respond, Jane jumped forward, stretching her hand to greet him and pushing Emily slightly back. "Hello, Mr. Alex. I am Jane from the Sales and Acquisition Department at Waltson's headquarters," she said, her voice overly enthusiastic. Jane assumed Alex was one of the Johnsons, unaware that Emily hadn't included him in any official reports, keeping his role more personal.

Alex looked slightly taken aback but extended his hand to shake hers. "Hello, Jane," he replied, his eyes flicking to Emily with a hint of amusement. Emily gave him a look that said "Sorry about that" with a slight shrug of her shoulders.

Lauretta, observing the awkward exchange, quickly interjected, "Alex is the town's representative, assisting us with getting to know the locals."

Jane's face turned red with embarrassment. "Oh, I see," she mumbled, stepping back and trying to regain her composure. "I'm sorry for the confusion."

Emily stepped forward to smooth things over. "No problem, Jane. We're all here to work together. Alex has been a tremendous help to us so far." She gave Alex a grateful smile.

Alex nodded. "Shall we head inside? The Johnsons are expecting us." He gestured toward the factory entrance.

As they walked in, Jane tried to cover her earlier misstep by engaging in conversation. "So, Alex, how long have you been working with Miss Walton on this project?"

Alex gave a noncommittal shrug. "A little while now. It's been interesting getting to know the ins and outs of the local businesses."Jane nodded vigorously. "That's great. And Emily, how have you found the local industry here? Any surprises?"

Emily, sensing the need to steer the conversation away from potential pitfalls, replied, "The local industry has its challenges, but it's fascinating to see the unique ways in which these businesses have grown. Each brewery has its own story, and the Johnsons are no exception."

Jane seemed eager to contribute. "I imagine it's a bit different from what we're used to at Waltson's. The scale and resources must be quite a contrast."

Emily nodded. "Absolutely. That's why it's important for us to understand their operations and see how we can best support them while ensuring it aligns with Waltson's standards."

As they approached the entrance, Alex turned to Emily. "Are you ready to dive into the details with the Johnsons?"

Emily took a deep breath. "Yes, let's get to it. We have a lot to discuss."

The group entered the factory, greeted by Mr. Jacob Johnson and his nephew Titus. Jacob's warm smile contrasted sharply with Titus's scornful look.

"Welcome, Miss Walton, Mr. Smith," Jacob said, shaking their hands. "It's a pleasure to have you here."

Titus, however, merely nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly as he recognized Lauretta from their earlier confrontation at Grizzly Bear. Lauretta met his gaze without flinching, her expression cool and composed.

Jane stepped forward, extending her hand in greeting. "I'm Jane from headquarters," she announced, attempting to assert her presence. However, Lauretta, always ready to take charge, smoothly continued without missing a beat.

"Yes, she is a representative from the headquarters," Lauretta interjected, her tone firm yet diplomatic. "Our visit today underscores how crucial the factory is to us and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to its remodeling and improvement."

Jane, momentarily taken aback by Lauretta's assertiveness, found herself compelled to smile, though internally embarrassed by being upstaged. Even Emily, recognizing the need for swift action, couldn't help but smile at Lauretta's proactive approach.

Emily began the conversation. "Thank you for having us, Mr. Johnson. We appreciate your time. We'd like to go over the specifics of the contract and see how we can address some of the issues we've identified."

Jacob's smile remained steady. "Of course. We're eager to hear your thoughts and see how we can improve."

As they settled into the meeting room, Emily laid out the documents, including the updated clauses they had discussed. "We've noted some concerns about outdated machinery and management practices," she said, glancing at Titus.

Titus crossed his arms, his expression hardening. "Our machinery works fine," he said curtly. "And our staff management is none of your business."

Jacob placed a calming hand on his nephew's arm. "Titus, let's hear them out. If there are improvements to be made, we should consider them."

Emily pressed on, maintaining her professional demeanor. "Our goal is to help streamline your operations and enhance productivity. We believe that modernizing some of your equipment could significantly boost efficiency."

Titus scoffed. "We don't need outsiders telling us how to run our business."

As the conversations continued and Titus's behavior grew increasingly annoying, Jane interjected, cutting into what Emily was saying. "Honestly, the content of this contract is way favorable for you. If it were an acquisition, you wouldn't even get half of this. I'm wondering why Mr. Titus here is being uncooperative," she stated bluntly.

Alex cast a sidelong glance at Emily, his expression a silent question: Are you seriously agreeing to this way of handling things? His eyes conveyed a mix of concern and disbelief.

Titus seized the opportunity to flare up at the implication. "Acquisition? I knew these corporations would want to swallow us whole, Uncle, you see..." he began, his tone laden with hostility.

Emily, feeling her heart sink at the escalating tension, stood up and addressed Titus with maturity and composure. "Hold on and listen, Mr. Titus," she said firmly. "I am the CEO of Waltson Corporations, and I am here with the documents. If you need time to go over them, that's fine. Please do. But we are not here to take over your business. We're here to work with you."

Her calm and reassuring manner seemed to diffuse some of the tension in the room, leaving Titus with little else to say. Jacob, recognizing the need to break the deadlock, spoke up. "That's fine. Thank you for incorporating our clauses into the contract. We'll review it and get back to you..."

Before Jacob could finish, Jane's interruption cut through the room like a sharp blade, her voice ringing with authority. "You have three days," she declared, her tone leaving no room for negotiation.Emily felt a surge of frustration at the ultimatum, but she masked it behind a composed facade. With a subtle nod, she acknowledged Jane's decree, her mind racing as she strategized how to navigate the tight deadline without compromising her objectives.

As tension simmered in the air, Alex shot Emily a glance filled with concern and silent questions. Emily met his gaze with a reassuring smile, silently conveying her determination to handle the situation with grace and resilience.

Despite the pressure mounting from Jane's imposing presence, Emily maintained her composure, her voice steady as she echoed the deadline. "Three days," she affirmed, her tone a careful balance of resolve and diplomacy.

Jacob, observing Emily and Jane's unified front, recognized the necessity of solidarity in the face of pressure. Rising from his seat, he extended his hand towards Emily, a gesture of mutual respect and understanding. With a firm handshake, they sealed their agreement and left the factory, their shared determination palpable in the air.

As they stepped out of the factory, Emily gestured for Jane to lead the way, with Lauretta taking the lead. Alex glanced at Emily, his curiosity evident in his expression, as they trailed behind the two women.

Sensing his questioning gaze, Alex couldn't resist asking, "What was that all about back there?" Emily met his gaze with a mysterious smile, her eyes twinkling with secrets yet to be revealed.

"There's a lot you don't know about me," she replied enigmatically, her words hanging in the air with a tantalizing allure. "But don't worry, you'll learn more little by little." With that, she gracefully made her way to her car, leaving Alex to ponder the cryptic message she had left him with.
