Chapter 3 - ASHES: 2

...Do I have your attention now?

The letter continued. Lucas didn't move. He closed his eyes, rubbed his face with his free left hand then continued to read;

 I know you're still confused by how Dan knew where you were, and what you were doing despite the door being closed. That's because of two things, hidden cameras and listening devices. Prior to my death, there were a total of five hidden cameras as well as an unknown number of listening devices spread out across your office. Where you're standing right now is a blind spot for the cameras. How do I know this? Because I once helped someone set up one camera. To think I would be among them in keeping you in your cage makes me sad. But there's no time to wallow in misery and go over the facts. I want to free you. Though I failed when I was alive, I was hoping you could give me a chance to do so...

 Lucas gasped. He reread the paragraph again. Hidden cameras? Listening devices? What the hell? He struggled to understand.

 You must think that I'm lying to you. I'm not. Knowing you, you'll probably want more evidence. I'll give you one more. Let's do something intangible. Why don't you call in your favorite secretary and ask about the Kata Company shares that you refused to buy. Go on I'll wait..

 Dread filled his gut. There's no way Mark would betray him. Ever. Slowly he went back to his seat and called Mark. He rushed in. Lucas, wasting no time asked," What happened to the Kata Co. shares"? Mark shrugged and replied simply," I bought them all under your name but later sold them. I made a neat profit of it," he smiled.

 Lucas looked at him shocked and confused. He felt betrayed. This wasn't what he had told him to do. Has it always been like this? If so for how long? He looks again at Mark and wonders just what the hell is going on?

He looked at the letter he had placed on the open book. He tried to read the next line when a shadow suddenly hovers above him. He places his right arm on top of the letter and glared at Mark." Leave," Lucas said to him vehemently. Mark lifted his eyes in surrender and slowly walked away.

He opened the door and banged it shut. How dare he glare at me, he thought. He was however amused. When did she write him a love letter when I had her begging for more and moaning in pleasure in his bed all night? He asked himself. Never mind she'll be begging for it tonight too. He grinned. The aspect of sleeping with his boss' fiancée made him feel good.

 Lucas held his head. He was in a state of pure confusion and hopelessness. Just what exactly is the letter telling him? That he is a bird? A puppet? Or something much worse? If so for how long has this been going on? Too confused, he crumples the letter and puts it in his pocket.
