Did the drugs wear off?
Melanie picked up her phone and called someone. She was driving frantically, afraid that if she drove normally, that Lucas she'd never seen before would be right behind her. "Hello," a voice answered the phone. It was Lucas' mother.
" Auntie help. Its Lucas he he," she said faking a sob and tears. " Wait calm down and tell me what happened dear, She said. Melanie told her everything while adding a few lies here and there and concluded it all by 'crying.' The mother assured her that she'd talk with Lucas and have him apologize to her. Relieved by this, Melanie ended the call and headed to Mark's house. He must be waiting for me she thought excitedly.
Lucas' mother, Rosanna Decker was a force to reckon with. She was a woman who into her late fifties looked like a thirty year old. She had shoulder length black hair and dark brown eyes. She had a petite body and this was what made people mistake her age. She was also known to be extremely ruthless even to her own sons.
She called her son Jake and asked about Lucas' condition. When that was done, she called Lucas. It wasn't until the third attempt did he pick it up. " Hi son how are you tonight"? Knowing his mother and not in the mood for a chit chat, Lucas answered," What is it this time"? Rosanna tried to hide her irritation but couldn't. Instead she sugar coated her words," I just wanted to check on you today son is that so bad"? she said cautiously.
" Ha," Lucas replied. He had expected this. A call from his mother defending Melanie. Was it always like this? he wondered. Surprised, his mother continued," Come on Luc you know how much she loves you and just wants to get closer to you right"? Lucas could feel his anger fading away and a sense of calm fell on him. " I just wanted to be alone for a while Mom," he replied slowly sitting down on his bed. His mind was getting foggy and his body was losing its strength. Something was wrong.
" I know son but don't worry in the morning make sure you apologize to her okay"? She continued her voice getting softer and slower. It was as though she was hypnotizing him. "Ok," he replied. He was getting sleepy. Drop it right now you idiot said the inner voice again. He didn't until," Let me ask you something son what was written in that letter you were holding"? That jolted him awake. " How the hell do you know that mother,"? he asked not bothering to hide his anger.
Rosanna was surprised. Something did happen to him. Loudly she said, " Well Mark told us about it and I thought that maybe that's what affecting..." the line went dead. Lucas, upon hearing the same excuse as that of Melanie, threw the phone to the wall , smashing it into pieces. He was awake again and no longer sleepy. Just what the hell was going on? Why did they keep asking about the letter? Was there some truth to it?
He went back into the bathroom, picked up the letter, returned to his room and placed it on the bed. He reread the letter. Internalizing word after word. A sneeze makes him realize that he was only wearing a towel. He grabbed a long sleeved sweatshirt and pants and sat on the bed reading the letter again. I'll have to go there at the Eastern Bank first thing in the morning, he thought as he threw himself into the bed and slept holding the letter.
