Chapter 6 - Truth

Layne's Point of View

The drawing room was huge, it was glamorously decorated too. I saw Mother sitting on one of the four couches inside and she was also with the green-eyed oddball. To my surprise, a huge portrait of him was hanging just beneath the fireplace.

Those pensive eyes, just like mine and Mother's.

Maybehe is "Lord Brevont."

As I walked in, both of them noticed my presence. "Layne, you look gorgeous." Mother greeted warmly.

After being forced to come here and her daughter being clueless about everything, here she is enjoying tea with this bastard. I sent a piercing gaze toward him before sitting beside my mother.

She poured some into a tea into my cup and then handed it over, "Layne, have some tea. You are now looking better; I was so worried because you were asleep for two days." Something serious did happen to me. I grabbed the cup and took a sip.

It's good.

My heart grew tense in anticipation of what will be revealed. As an impatient person, "Let's cut to the chase Mother." I said after taking a second sip. She then looked at me with great seriousness and then glanced at the green-eyed oddball.

"Well, I don't know where to start." she sighed deeply. "This man we are with; you may have noticed the similarity between the color of our eyes and hair. It is not a coincidence because.... he is my younger brother and the Head of this House, Count Miern Brevont. And my name, is not Montessa Miroff but Montes Brevont."

A strong sense a strong emotion lingered in her eyes. "We are no farmers Layne, The blood that is flowing down your veins is of nobility."

"I've hid you for years, concealed your existence.... to protect you."

Protect me from what?!

I was too stunned to speak. All this shocking information, it's hard to process.

Iwho knew nothing of etiquette and proper manners, is a noble?!

Anger, confusion and uncertainty engulfed my mind. I know what I need to do, "Was Father being dead a lie too?" I asked but Mother didn't say a word. I didn't want my emotions to get ahead of me and so I remained composed and asked further. "Is Lynos a made-up name too? Tell me, Mother! You said you would—"

"Your Father's alive," Uncle said from the sideline which made both Mother and I look towards him. So, the grave was fake. I have been celebrating birthdays on an empty grave. This situation is amusing, I have been mourning for someone who is very much alive!

"Brother!" Mother shouted.

"Why? She deserves to know the truth sister." he then chuckled. "Is this situation funny to you Miern?" Mother said angrily. He ignored her and continued, "That's why I was able to convince your Mother to come here because your Father is looking for both of you."

What was that just now?

Father is looking for us?!

A sudden gush of wind swiveled around out of nowhere. It did not come from outside because the windows were closed.

Could this be...

The wind concentrates around Mother and Uncle. This feels like the anonymous force that rattled our house, so it was from both of them! I was astonished but scared at the same time. The summoned wind swirled around both of them.

At that moment, I looked at my hands thinking whether I had magic too. Because if they have it, maybe I inherited it too.

The wind grew stronger and stronger that even I couldn't look at them without covering my eyes. It's too strong.

"Uncle! Mother! Calm down! You don't need to fight each other!" shouting with all my lungs out. The striking winds vanished in a blink.

"Awww. She called me uncle." He said out of the blue while his hands were crunched over his face.

"Disgusting." Mother said and I agree.

"We're not fighting, dear nephew. What you saw was just.... a good 'ol, sibling..... love?" Uncle said while nervously laughing. Mother gave him an eye roll.

They clearly were fighting.

"Mother, I really want to know who I am." I felt my eyes moistened, "am I asking for too much?"

She sighed, signaling defeat. "No Layne, I know that you deserve the truth. But the truth is far more complicated than you could ever imagine; unspoken of, all these years! What if you're not ready—."

"No.....I am more than ready, Mother."" I said while looking at her without batting an eye.

It is only the truth that I desire.

"Now tell me, who am I?"
