Malin didn't manage to wait for some old man to get up, and as the train had already started moving, he ultimately decided to place the saddle on Spotty's back. He then rode her to leap off the train, took up his bow and arrows, and began pursuing a herd of yellow deer— emergency rations and Spotty's family's meat consumption had been speeding up lately, so Malin had to start hunting, or else the emergency rations might just have to sacrifice themselves heroically, as the term suggests.
After shooting down three yellow deer, Malin managed to control the rest of the herd and tossed them into his own sub-plane—don't forget, Ails' originally desolate sub-plane now had birds singing and flowers blooming. It was better to let them reproduce in there for fresh meat later on.
With his prey in tow, he caught up to the train—the steam train wasn't too fast, and Spotty, being one of the few high-speed Spirits, had initially been able to jump onto the train thanks to her speed.
