In the suburbs of Xinhaishi, a black government SUV jerked and sputtered as it drove into an old residential complex. The narrow roads within the complex made driving particularly unstable, especially around the turns, slow and jerky, as if it might scrape against something at any moment, prompting the elderly on the sidewalk to pick up their stools and keep their distance.
The driver seemed aware of their own lacking skills, for after arriving in front of the target apartment block, they abandoned any attempt to park in reverse and instead stopped abruptly in the middle of the road, killed the engine, and flung the door open to get out.
Just as the bystanders furrowed their brows, preparing to question the driver for obstructing the road,
they saw a woman with her arm in a cast step down from the car, casually throwing on a coat with one hand.
