Chapter 5 - chapter 4

I didn't know how long I was going to be there for so practically packed everything in my room. That included all the letters my parents have ever written to me I never went a second without them, I always kept them in my bag; it was made of a moss green fabric with leather straps and buckles to keep it closed, it was worn and old but I think it just added to its charm I was given it by my grandma and grandpa to have when I went away with my parents but now I use it for school and everything else, it never left my side.

I sat on top of my suitcase and bounced slightly trying to get it to close. This normally worked but I usually had my parents jumping on it too, to get it to close. It was nearly closed, just a little bit more. I jumped as hard as I could to get it passed the last little bit and I just got it closed. I sat on it and breathed a sigh of relief; it had closed        finally. Yes!

I took one last look around my room; its walls covered in cartoony drawings that I drew, my grandparents said that I could decorate it in any way I liked and I drew    cartoon figures on the walls, my wardrobe was emptied into my suit case that lay at my feet and my floor clean for once, the only thing that looked the same as always was my little window seat where I sat to draw almost every day after school. I sighed and started to make my way to my door wheeling my suitcase behind me with my bag on my shoulder my sketchbook peeking out of the top. I looked at the clock to see the time and was shocked to see it was passed five, I had taken an hour to pack my room. I turned to door handle and opened the door. Ben's mum had arrived and was sitting talking to my grandparents, Ben was sitting on the sofa looking bored. I coughed and everyone turned round to look at me. "I'm all packed." I said trying not to blush with the stares everyone was giving me. Ben's mum said gently "Hi Fern, I'm parked outside let me take your bags and we'll be on our way" I said nothing and handed my    suitcase over. My grandparents got up, hugged me, and said "see you soon sweetheart." I smiled and walked towards Ben who was just standing there looking awkward, I gently pushed him towards the door and said, "Let's go", he just put all his wait on me, laughing, and almost crushed me. I laughed and shoved him harder he ended up falling through the door and just catching himself before he hit the ground, that made me laugh even more. I looked at him, he was trying to get up and kept falling over laughing. Eventually, I had to go help him up because it was a little bit sad     watching him flail on the floor.

When I gave him my hand, he sobered up a bit and grabbed it. "Thanks" he said as he grabbed my hand. A laugh died in my throat when it suddenly dawned on me that I will not see my grandparents every morning at the breakfast table or every evening at dinner, it took me three months to get used to my parents not being there. Ben looked at me and grabbed my hand and gave me an encouraging smile, "come on" he said as he gently pulled my arm, I took a deep breath and walked out of the door. As we walked down the garden path, I turned back to see my grandparents at the door watching me as I walked down the garden path. "Bye see you soon" I said as Ben continued to drag down the path. As I turned back around to see where I was going tears pricked my eyes. Ben's mum was holding the creaky gate open for us. "Come on." She said as she closed the gate behind us.

Ben's mum, Darcy, has always been nice to me, she thinks I'm a good influence. I go round to Ben's a lot and his mum is always in the kitchen baking something or in her home office doing something. Ben lives in a small two-bedroom bungalow we mainly hang out in the living room or Ben's bedroom; Ben has a bunk bed in his room so that he can shove all his unwanted junk on the top there is a lot of odd old socks up there.

When I got to the car, a mint green Fiat, I took my     rucksack off and put it in the boot along with my        suitcase. Ben was sitting in the back, and I slid in next to him, he just looked at me smiled and did his seatbelt up. His mum, who was already in the car and had her seat belt done up, turned around and said, "Buckle up      buttercup." So, I did my seat belt up and smiled, she    always called me buttercup and it cheered me up to know that despite what has happened she was going to be the same.
