Chapter 6 - Drums and Magic

"What is that? Who's playing drums?" Bonnie's anxious heart was beating in sync with the sound of the pounding.

Could there be a stranger in the dark with them?

Dixie got up and wiped her sweaty face with her shirt. She flicked on the light switch and headed towards their kitchen. "I'll go check. Gosh, I'm so tired. That dream exhausted me."

"Wait, you too? Did you dream about the book too?" Bonnie leapt off the bed and grabbed her sister's wrist.

Dixie said nothing. She headed to the kitchen, her eyes glazed.

Bonnie walked behind her, holding tightly onto her entire arm. "I have a bad feeling. A really bad feeling."

The drumming was coming from within their trashcan. The same place where Dixie had tossed the paranormal book! The lid of the can was leaking light, as if someone had placed a flashlight inside it. Kneeling down next to it, a strange sense of longing filled their minds.

The same longing they had while dreaming. Were they still dreaming?

Suddenly the lid flies open, breaking off completely. The haunted book soars out as if thrown. The infinity symbol separates itself from the cover and levitates over their heads. The drums beat louder and faster as the infinity grows larger and brighter.

The sisters cry out in shock, falling back as they shield their eyes.

The room is sweltering.

The tempo overwhelms them, triggering a panic. At this point, it sounds as if the drumming is coming from within them.

Dixie clutches her chest as a sudden sharp pain twists her heart. "What's happening?!"

Bonnie clutches her throat as breathing become difficult. "You bought a haunted book! We're going to die!"

The infinity drops over them, trapping each sister in one of its loops. The knot grows tighter until their backs slam together. A sharp current of lightning shoots throughout their bodies. They both shriek in agony.

"Dixie...just know that I'll always love you. You're the best sister any girl could have!"

"What!? No! We're not going to---" Her sentence breaks off as she erupts into a coughing fit.

A moment later, Bonnie starts shaking as if she's having a seizure.

Finally, it all became too much. The suffocating heat combined with their individual ailments overwhelms their senses. Both lose consciousness like a candle being snuffed.

Their bodies slowly dissolve into mist and get absorbed into the infinity. The symbol disappears as soon as it finishes devouring them.

The book falls to the ground and a haunting silence replaces the wild beating.
