Chapter 4 - Do You Live Under a Rock

She looked at me blankly for a few seconds before letting out a melodious peal of laughter. She turned to look up again, "Surely you jest!" She said .

"Why would you think that?" I replied curious on how she could be sure that I am not the lurker when she has no prior contact with me.

"The lurker is a horrid being or so I was told and you? You're human of course." She said

With a little smile playing on the corners of her plump lips, I could see she believed I was telling a joke and decided to play along .

"Yes indeed, I'm only human and god forbid I be some like that nightmare" .

She turned to look at me with a renewal of interest visible on her eyes which I could see faintly in the scarce moonlight, it seems she was not among the upper echelon of the city and was not qualified to go into the purgatories of their church or she would have instantly recognized me.

"Have you seen it? The lurker I mean."

I was in for yet another round of surprise how could someone be so fascinated by something allegedly dangerous and horrid, it was as if she had a death wish and I couldn't help but make reference to the tale of Pandora .

"I haven't seen it but I have seen someone get burnt alive because of it." I reply.

"How saddening." She said looking down, her countenance had dropped and although I was with no powers I could still faintly hear her heart beating rhythmically against the sloshing sound of the water below, I decided to divert the topic.

"It must have been hectic walking miles to get here from uptown, why go through so much trouble for something people here are trying to run away from." I said

"I took the sub so I didn't have to walk the distance and besides it's worth it to see a fantasy creature in the flesh." She said with a small smile.

"Sub?" I asked as I couldn't control my confusion. Although, I've been in this city for 16 years, I am awfully not well versed in the human ways, except for food and attire I basically know nothing else about them; you see the innate disdain as a demon towards technology is hard to put down, and yes I also find it hard not to refer to myself as a demon.

"You don't know of the subway?" She looked at me with pure disbelief and confusion as if I was - what's the term again - speaking Greek. Seeing that it wasn't a joke she continued,

"No offence, but do you live under a rock?"
