Chapter 13 - Chapter 12

As Rima and Haytham navigated the labyrinthine streets of Toleito, their breathless escape from the city and the Fence Republic was a high-stakes endeavor. The urgency of their situation led to tense yet hushed conversations between them.

Rima's voice trembled with anxiety as they darted through narrow alleys and concealed passages. "Haytham, do you think we'll make it out of here?"

Haytham's expression remained resolute as he glanced back at her. "We have no other choice, Rima. We must stay focused and keep moving."

The pair narrowly avoided a patrol of soldiers as they slipped into the shadows of a bustling marketplace. Rima watched as Haytham deftly distracted the crowd with a series of street tricks, culminating in a seemingly impossible card trick that drew gasps of awe.

Once they had slipped past the checkpoint and out of the marketplace, Rima couldn't contain her curiosity any longer. "Where did you learn to do that, Haytham? Those tricks were incredible."

Haytham chuckled softly, his eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. "I have a few hidden talents. Let's just say I've had to adapt to survive in this world of secrets and intrigue."

Their escape continued, with Haytham leading Rima through a maze of hidden routes. As they finally reached the outskirts of Toleito, they approached the bridge that marked the border of the Fence Republic. However, their journey was far from over, and they faced yet another obstacle.

At the bridge checkpoint, a stern officer scrutinized their identification papers. Rima's heart pounded in her chest as she watched Haytham, who had adopted the persona of Colonel Antonov once again, deal with the officer.

Rima whispered to Haytham, her voice barely audible. "Haytham, are you sure this will work? We can't afford to be caught now."

Haytham maintained his confident demeanor as he replied in a low voice, "Trust me, Rima. I've done this before."

Rima's heart raced, and she glanced at Haytham, who remained surprisingly composed. Haytham calmly presented a set of papers, his fingers steady despite the tension in the air.

"Colonel Antonov, reporting for duty," he declared in a tone of authority.

The officer scrutinized the papers for a moment, then looked up at Haytham, his expression skeptical. "Colonel Antonov? You're not from around here, are you?"

Haytham nodded, maintaining his confident facade. "No, I'm from the central command. We've received intelligence about a potential threat, and I've been dispatched to investigate."

The officer seemed to hesitate, torn between his duty and the authoritative presence of Colonel Antonov. Finally, he nodded and waved them through. "Very well, Colonel. Safe travels."

Their interactions with the officer were tense, but Haytham's counterfeit documents and commanding presence ultimately convinced the officer to let them pass.

As Rima and Haytham crossed the bridge and left the Fence Republic behind, they breathed a collective sigh of relief. Their escape from Toleito had been filled with unexpected twists and turns, and they had managed to slip away just in the nick of time.

Their journey continued as they ventured into the unknown territory that lay beyond the Fence Republic's borders. It wasn't long before they encountered a pair of lively young travelers who seemed to be in a similar predicament.

Rima and Haytham were about to pass by the twins, Ava and Arieh, when Arieh suddenly exclaimed, "Wait a moment! Aren't you Colonel Antonov? The hero of the republic?"

Haytham paused, a surprised expression crossing his face. "Well, I wouldn't say hero, but yes, I am Colonel Antonov."

One thing about his fake identity as Colonel Antonov was that it was a real identity that he had worked for and which he had earned after a lot of difficulties. So he leaned towards Rima and whispered: "This identity is not entirely fake, it's like you being Kelly Minsk and Rima. Both are legal and valid identities."

Ava and Arieh exchanged excited glances. Ava, with her fiery red hair and freckles, grinned mischievously. "This is incredible! We've heard stories about you at home. You're practically a legend!"

Rima watched the exchange with curiosity, her suspicions piqued. "You two seem rather familiar with Colonel Antonov."

Arieh, the more reserved of the twins, nodded enthusiastically. "Our father used to serve in the Fence Republic's military, and he would tell us stories about the heroic Colonel Antonov. He always said you were a symbol of courage and integrity."

Haytham chuckled modestly, humbled by their admiration. "Well, I'm honored to hear that. But what brings you two out here, trying to leave the Fence Republic?"

Ava's expression grew more serious. "We want to go to Elysium. Our father told us about a special academy there that can help people like us unlock their potential."

Rima's curiosity deepened. "People like you? What do you mean?"

Arieh explained, his eyes shining with a hint of excitement. "In Elysium, they teach something called Aura. It's like a hidden power within us that can give us supernatural abilities. Our father had trained there, and he said it's a place of great mystery and potential. Furthermore, we had to escape the Fence Republic because our father betrayed them after the military coup."

Arieh's eyes shone with excitement as he explained the concept of Aura, but his enthusiasm quickly turned to bewilderment as Ava smacked him on the head.

"Are you stupid or what?!!!" Ava exclaimed in a hushed yet furious tone. Her freckles seemed to dance with indignation as she glared at her brother. She couldn't believe he had just revealed such a sensitive piece of information to a supposed colonel.

Arieh rubbed his head sheepishly, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I-I didn't think..."

"Rima, this could be the opportunity we've been looking for," Haytham whispered to her. "A place of hidden powers and secrets. It might hold the answers we seek."

Haytham, attempting to keep a straight face, intervened with a chuckle. "Well, it seems we're all sharing secrets today."

Rima couldn't help but join in the humor of the moment, finding solace in the absurdity of their situation. "I suppose it's only fair, then. My name is Rima, and this is Haytham. And it seems we're all headed to this mysterious academy in Elysium."

Ava's initial anger began to subside, replaced by a sense of camaraderie. She offered a sheepish smile. "I'm Ava, and this is my brother, Arieh. Sorry about the outburst. We've been on edge since leaving Toleito."

Arieh nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we've had our fair share of close calls."

Rima extended her hand in a gesture of friendship. "No need to apologize. We're all in this together now. Let's head to the academy and uncover its secrets, shall we?"

With introductions made and apologies accepted, the four travelers continued their journey toward Elysium, each carrying their own hopes, secrets, and dreams. The mysteries of the academy awaited them, and their enigmatic odyssey had only just begun.
