Chapter eight
TARA
I don't know what I was expecting! That he didn't have a girlfriend? Just because he avoids the ones at work.
I must have felt so special that it was only me he didn't really avoid in this office, I must have been over my head for even thinking that.
I should know that guys like him did not find anything special in taking a girl's first time, and he asked his girlfriend to come to his office.
To crown it all, the girl was perfection herself. There was no way I could ever be compared to her. I felt sad and struggled to hold back my tears. I kept telling myself over and over again that I don't like him, and now I feel sad that his girlfriend came to his office to look for him.
The words she said rang in my ears again, and I felt slapped across the face all over again.
"Hey!" the lady in front of me shouted, "Are you even listening to me at all? Why are you behaving like a freaking weirdo? What type of quack receptionist does Ryan have in his office?"
"I am so sorry, ma'am. I am not a receptionist, and I would like to know if Mr. McKenzie asked to meet you." Even if I was pained by her presence here, I would have to follow protocol and know why she was here.
She was even on a first-name basis with my boss, and she said it so casually that it shows how close she was with my boss.
"Can I know your name, please?" I asked.
"You can't know my name. My name doesn't matter. Just tell Ryan I am here to see him," she said again.
I didn't want to get into trouble with Ryan's girlfriend and maybe the future madam of the company. Who knows if her first order will be to sack me with immediate effect. I just escaped from one, and I wouldn't want to get into another trouble.
I took the telephone on my work table and dialed my boss's number. He picked up, and I told him that someone is asking for him and she didn't give me a name except for the fact that she said she is your girlfriend.
"My girlfriend!" My boss repeated, and I was wondering why he was asking again or if he was just surprised she came looking for him at work.
"Tara... Please tell her I am very busy and have a very tight schedule, and we will talk later. But make sure she doesn't try to enter," he said.
I faced the woman in front of me and smiled that at least he won't meet her at the office, and that gave me a little comfort.
"He has a very tight schedule today, and he is busy, so he won't be able to see you. He asked me to tell you that he will talk to you later."
Her beautiful face morphed into a scowl as she looked at me, and I was wondering why it was directed at me because I was only passing along a message.
"Can't I see him now?" she asked me.
"He specifically told me not to allow anybody in, so I am sorry, but you won't be able to see him," I said once again.
She stomped her foot on the ground and gave me a look before she left. I just shrugged it off, feeling happy once more.
I went through the schedule I was going through and put the finishing touch to it.
I went to look for Mr. Benson's file on the shelf and spent a generous amount of time searching for it. I later found it and promised to come back and arrange the scattered files alphabetically again so it could be easy for me to find anything there next time.
I took the schedule and the file and strode into his office. He was busy with something, reading and writing, I guess.
He asked me to put the file on the table, and I did. He asked me to leave, that he would get back to me after he had finished going through it.
I left the room glad that I was at least done with my work. I don't need anybody to tell me that I don't have much to do today again.
I video called Becca, and she picked up. I could see she was not at home as she was dressed in one of her expensive clothes. She told me she was going to message me, so I ended the video call.
I saw Dammy's message, and I can see that Becca already ratted out on me. She told him that I was already back to work, and he was asking in the message if I was truly okay with going back to work and if I want to work with my boss again.
I replied to him that I was more than happy with coming back to work. I rested my head on the table until I heard my phone vibrating, and I saw another message had entered.
"These are one of the peaks of being your own boss; you won't be afraid of someone sacking you."
I doubt he had work to do in his office because if he had work today, he wouldn't be messaging me at this time and period.
Dammy: "You don't really need to work if you don't want to. Like I said, I can take care of you."
I scoffed at his words. My mom didn't train me to be dependent on other people. I want to be a strong, independent woman, not a liability to someone else.
I didn't say he can't spend on me, but resigning and staying at home and allowing him to spend on me are two different things.
Me: "I am okay with it, no worries."
Dammy: "When is your lunch break? Let's have lunch together."
This guy doesn't relent, does he??
"Judging by the way you are grinning at your phone and did not hear me come outside, then that person must be pretty important," my boss said very close to me.
I jumped up, startled at hearing his voice. I didn't know how he got so close to me without me knowing about it.
He just stopped there, gave me a long look, handed the schedule chart to me, and went back to his office.
I looked at his office door, expecting him to just appear again, but he didn't. What a fright!!
I looked at my phone and replied back.
Me: "Sure, no problem. I will pick a place close to my area, but can you really bear the looks people will be giving you? I was the one that didn't know you, but other people know you, and you are very popular."
Dammy: "I was afraid of that too. That was why I was thinking maybe I should send my driver to come and pick you, and we will go to a VIP restaurant."
I glanced around the office again, making sure Mr. McKenzie hasn't appeared back at my back.
Me: "There is no problem then."
I looked at the time, and I saw that we only have a few minutes to our lunch break, and it was over an hour. That should be enough time to go and come back. We were allowed to leave the office during lunch breaks.
Becca didn't text me, so I assumed she was busy, wherever she is.
I texted her that I was going for lunch with Dammy, and immediately, a reply came in.
This girl could not text me, but she could reply to gossip.
I decided to put her in suspense, so I didn't reply to her.
RYAN
I stood by my office window, looking out into the city. I didn't have to look at Tara's phone to know who she was texting, grinning like that.
The sight of her so happy with just a mere message made me fold my hands into tight fists, digging my nails into my skin.
I seriously needed to tell Dammy before things get more serious than this. I took out my mobile phone and texted Dammy that he should come by my house tonight, and that I had some important things to discuss with him.
I would also like to discuss Trisha's problem with him, as I didn't know what exactly she was looking for. What was she aiming at today at the office, in telling Tara she is my girlfriend?
I know she doesn't relent, and I know certainly that I was going to be seeing more of her now, but she won't have her way, and I would see to it. And besides, the relationship between the both of us had ended a long time ago.
